Doc, you are “next level” … I dig how us older guys who recall mutts genius, get to see you form it out in the modern platforms. The production tips of my youth were all so guarded and took on these mythical concepts! Enjoy all your Mutt reference vids as well as your generosity spreading your knowledge!

What's really interesting is that i intuitively do this on most of my productions. Always adding little elements to carry the song to the chorus. Second verse usually has more elements than the first, to pick it up a notch etc... Great info, Bobby!

Took the words right out of my mouth with the orchestral composers. One of the biggest mistakes young composers make is keeping their orchestration too static. Listen to guys like Alan Silvestri and John Powell (and of course the old masters) and how they keep moving things around to follow the 8-bar rule (or less, depending on tempo), switching melody from one instrument or section to another, interoducing coiunterpoint or embellishments, etc. On another note, I absolutely love the electro-spaghetti western vibe of this track.

I’ve noticed in a lot of current pop music that elements change almost every two bars and sometimes drop all of the previous instrumentation like they are starting a new song every 8. Thanks for another great video

True. But also makes all the current pop tunes so damned predictable and by the numbers. Nobody dares to change it up.

Dr B... looks like during post production what the band brings to table is just really the start. You add depth and texture on top of whatever they bring. Without those little 'adds' by you, the pre-chorus is rather dull. You certainly take steps that add life to intro and set up for the coming chorus. Yes, rules are rules, and sometimes they aren't. Wisdom gained from experience determines how and when rules apply or don't. I can recall listening to 80's rock back in the day with headphones. On top of these tricks you demonstrate, sound balance Left / Right was also tweaked. Could really hear the Stereo effect and then it would change back and forth. It was orgasm for the ears. It was even better than being there in concert... perfect post production left us wanting more (so we bought more).

Ive always known this just by ear.. kinda always thought it WOULD be the 4 bar rule, but correct if the tempo was fast then it would change things. Very cool stuff with the intro and totally wet clave that almost sounds like something from a synth. Coping the 8 or 4 bar rule with the rule of 2, when you drop in 2 things at a time, it puts the listener in an exponentially expanding soundscape. I really like the idea of adding in little parts on the changes, and not just adding in things that have to stay in the mix, but almost like effects that cue the new part. Gonna have to use that more as well as the purposefully guiding the listener idea .also minimizing right before a chorus to really have it be felt. Awesome example!

Now that you said it, it's obvious. Intuitively this is something that you'd do even if you didnt know the rule existed. But the real talent, vision and craftmanship is how to apply this. You lose the element of surprise if you just copy this idea. All in all, this is very good food for the though. Thank you, awesome video.

Thanks for sharing your knowledge and expertise with all of us and for knocking it out of the park again. By the way, what is the name of the track you were working on and how do we purchase a copy to listen to? Does the final release have lyrics and vocals?

Curious what reverb plugin(s) you use, if your using any specific ones available your getting so many deep verbs. I've been wanting to add a nice reverb plugin as the fee i have are pretty basic, K say strymon recently released a Big Sky plugin which I may try.. unless it costs as much as the pedal haha.

George Martin did this with The Beatles going back to their first album. They'd add harmonica, cowbell, tambourine, harmony, piano etc. at 8 bar intervals to break up to monotony.

So… where is the Mutt Lange study in this? You are adding bits n´stuff to the arrangement every 4-8 bars depending on tempo. Cool. Not groundbreakingly new. Seems a bit clickbaity to include Mutt and not use a handful of his arrangements for analysis. 🤷🏻‍♂️

For hard rock def leppard high and dry album is probably a great example of mutt doing this. You can REALLY hear it with headphones. Pick scrapes, string slides, etc come out of nowhere and then disappear.
