I like Climax White, it has hints of corn, green bean, and turpentine. After about 1\2 of the bottle you can begin to pick up on a slight toilet water and carpet aroma. I do drink responsibly and pass out without driving home.

Lagavulin 16. It has been my go-to for a long time and even though I've had many other Islay and Highland single malts, and pretty much every popular rye, blended and single malt whisky out there, there's just none better -- it's the smoothest, most aromatic and well balanced of them all. I drink it with a few ice cubes (even though I have the rocks in the freezer) and it makes it just perfect. I know there are many who don't enjoy the peat smoke flavor or the aroma but I only really started enjoying whisky once I discovered the Islay scotch. Another good one would be Ardbeg Corryvreckan, it is a bit more abupt than Lagavulin 16 but still very good. On the lower end of things I can recommend Scarabus -- gets your foot in the door without breaking the bank and gives you a nice "welcome" kick in the teeth (if lucky you can find it on sale for under $30). Please don't confuse with Lagavulin 8, Lagavulin 9 (GoT Edition) or Lagavulin 11 (Offerman Edition) -- though all great single malts in their own right, none of them have the qualities of the Lagavulin 16. Lagavulin 25 is excellent but barely worth the price tag. I promise I don't work for Lagavulin, I just really enjoy their whisky.
@Everydaygentleman3 жыл бұрын
I tried Lagavulin and definitely enjoyed it. I find the sweet spot for scotch is right around the 18 year mark. I've tried Mac 18, 21 and 25. 18 is by far my preference.

Being from Kentucky you have 2 bottles that I some what agree with. First you need a little burn that can only come from bourbon. For a simple everyday bourbon it Very Old Barton 100 proof. Other options are 1892, Buffalo Trace, Knob Creek, but if you want a real sipping bourbon you have to go Booker Noe that is straight out of the barrel. 125+ proof. This is great on a late summer afternoon or on a cold winter day listening to good jazz. Always drink neat with no contamination from ice, water or soda which is criminal. Most people who rate whiskey are to over educated or self indulgent. For the everyday person it’s how it rolls off the tongue, tastes and gives you the proper burn.
@Everydaygentleman3 жыл бұрын
I have some higher proof stuff on my shelf now, including that Bookers. I have a Stagg Jr that is around 130. Very warm but very tasty

If its' smoky your wanting try Tullamore Dew, as a friend said, "they put the char right to it." I prefer the light smoothness of Bushmill's Black Bush. Mostly I sip a Bourbon like Jefferson's or Woodford Reserve although I also like 1792. I might drink a beer with a meal or wine if there is nothing else. Neat is the way I take it. I don't care for mixed drinks.

Many years ago I learned from an old gentleman whom I greatly respect that to truly appreciate the subtleties of a good whiskey you NEVER drink it "straight." That is for those insecure about their masculinity who wish to prove something to themselves and others. A gentleman mixes his whiskey with about an equal part of good, pure, water... not chlorinated city crap, and not iced. Ice chills the drink and makes your taste buds less effective at judging the whiskey. Just water. Pure whiskey has a high enough alcohol content to numb the taste buds badly. This is especially true of bonded (100 proof) or higher proof whiskies. By diluting the whiskey with pure, tasteless water, you lessen this effect, and allow the taste buds to do their job. There, I've passed on what I learned, and KNOW, from experience, to be very true.
@Everydaygentleman3 жыл бұрын
I don't disagree with adding water. I think to each their own though. I've tried a variety of ways with different whisky and it all depends on the particular liquid in your glass. There are some high proofs I can drink straight out of the bottle. Bookers is one for example. There's also some lower proof that I prefer with a some water added. It all depends on how the person drinking prefers their drink. We all have our ways of enjoying whisky and none are wrong. Except, of course, not finishing your whisky. That is a sin. Cheers buddy!! 🥃
@powellmountainmike88533 жыл бұрын
@@Everydaygentleman I totally agree "to each his own." My point is that, to truly be able to appreciate the subtleties of various whiskies, dilution with water allows the taste buds, and even the nose, to do their job. If that is not important to you, and you just wish to quickly get slammed, and perhaps upset your stomach, why, go right ahead and drink it straight. There have been times where I have done so myself.
@Everydaygentleman3 жыл бұрын
Haha, not at all, it's not about "getting slammed". I don't drink to get drunk. Typically when you do a tasting, you start neat, then add water if you so prefer. In my experience, there's a point where too much water diminishes the true flavor for me and my taste buds. That point, for me, is typically after a few drops. If a 1:1 ratio works for you then enjoy bud.

There's lots of options for whiskey, it just depends on what you like in your nose and palate. I haven't tried CR Reserve but from I see in the notes there's an apple vibe. I would say try Hibiki Harmony. I Japanese whiskey that reminds me of apple juice.
