Initially, I believed it nigh impossible to value the "humble" perspective of a man wearing a braided chain 4 inch gold medallion. But if this man was a character in Fallout, he'd be a goddamn 10/10 charisma. I would follow him into battle, just to have the small chance of celebrating with him afterwards.

In Scotland, people sometimes have water rather than ice. The difference is simply that the ice gradually melts as you drink it, so it has a varying amount of water (depending on how fast you drink) whereas a dash of water stays constant throughout the whole drink. And of course if you prefer it chilled or room temp. Water/ice drastically changes the taste of whikey (generally brings out sweeter flavours) so I always like to try a new one with and without ice and then decide.

I once froze a bottle of gin for my martinis. Freezing improves vodka in that it gains a very oily mouth feel, and I figured since gin IS a vodka, why not? I found out why not. A great martini requires some water dilution, which doesn't happen when the booze has been chilled below zero. You get a fiery, oily martini that tastes like crap. Similarly, with room temperature gin that is shaken, not stirred, you get a watered down, chilled drink where you barely taste the gin. Stirred, the fire of the gin is extinguished, the flavors all come through, and it is properly chilled for enjoyment.

Bitter coffee and the stigma behind coffee just being bitter all the time comes from years of people being subjected to badly made, old, poorly roasted coffee for years. I wholeheartedly believe that anyone can enjoy black coffee if it's made with fresh beans, roasted well, ground right before brew, measured properly and made well. Also, I don't believe you had an espresso if what your drink came in a "bowl with a handle". Espresso is served in a tiny cup, similar in size to a shot glass.

This just blew my mind. I got my love of whiskey from working in an Irish Pub some years ago, but I never heard of adding a few drops of water to drink. Of I had to try it with the whiskey I had on hand. It's Jameson, so it's a pretty translucent whiskey. I held the glass at eye level and dropped the water in. I saw the water flowing through it and down like it was a bit viscous, so I figured there had to be a least a little bit of oil there. I started with about 3 drops and took a sip. I only say "about three" as I did not have a straw handy, so I had to let it drip off of a spoon and approximate it that way. I did notice a little change to the flavor profile, but the biggest change was the feeling of oil on my tongue. I repeated with a little more water for the next drink, and sure enough, the profile changed to a flavor I have never had out of Jameson. I look forward to playing around with this newfound knowledge!

I think one of my favorite whiskey experiences was with Woodford 4 Wood. Started out with about 2 1/2 shots neat in a rocks glass, and added a single ice cube after a couple of sips and the slightly melted ice opened up the flavor, then as it chilled the profile changed again and then as the cube melted the flavor profile changed again. It is one of my favorite methods for trying a new whiskey. It really gives a sense of how you want to order a new whiskey.

@iPhoneeditor

A lot of spirits contain amphipathic molecules that will interact with water and a little bit of water can help them separate from non water soluble molecules where you can taste them better. Using an Ice ball you decrease the surface area of the ice compared to a cube of the same volume so it melts slower letting you chill your drink and adding less water content over time. If you want your drink chilled but without water content you can use whiskey stones. I've found in my limited experience some drinks taste good with a small amount of water content or as they change over time as slightly more water is mixed in by the ice melting and some drinks water tends to ruin. I always drink water along with my drinks or in between them to stay hydrated and sometimes water content in the drink itself can facilitate that and decrease the severity of any potential intoxication. Edit: They talked about this with the whiskey and water segment, the principal works with lots of drinks.

So.....someone is telling you that adding (dissolvable) plastics and chemical adhesives to the alcohol that you intend to consume is not only a good idea, but physiologically beneficial!?!? Ummm.....yeah....does this person also have too-good-to-be-true reality opportunities and faster get-rich methods no one else knows about? 🙄🤦‍♂️

I actually went to the store, found the classic laddie, and then noticed "unpeated" on the bottle. At first I thought I had found a different whisky in a similar looking bottle. Confused I found this video again and checked. Pete, these guys got drunk and forgot about you man...

18:51 that Texas Bourbon, me forgiving it for even existing, but calling anything that's 9 months old a whisky is technically and morally incorrect. You need to age it at least 3 years to be called whisky.

I've noticed that whisky isn't as strong when on the rocks but I assumed that's because the ice was melting and watering it down. Very interesting that it is actually because when the temperature is much lower the taste decreases

Okay...i drink my Captain Morgan Private Stock. I usually don’t drink it on the rocks, but i started that way with it. However, i do like it chilled. I find that different flavors arise from the bottle that aren’t there when it’s room temp. Now, i understand that chilling it makes it easier to drink. I’m okay with that. Does anyone else find these little nuances when they are drinking their whiskey/bourbon/rhye?

Yeah sorry, I totally disagree with the ice and the water down comment. Not everyone wants to listen to every song an the album, sometimes you just want the hits. Toning down some flavors allows you to bring others forward. And that's really nice when you are trying to isolate specific aldehydes and esters. It is also VERY nice when you are trying to detect faint cuts in your whisky; in case someone sold you Blended when the bottle says Single (I'm looking at you Scotland). Also ice is a must for emergent over proof whiskeys. See "Adrift", "Blantons" or "Willett"

I vaguely recall a video demonstrating a device, shaped like a very roughly cut skeleton key cut from a piece of oak. They implied this "key" could improve the impact of the aging process. If there is any valid science to this claim, wouldn't oak bracing within a barrel achieve this same result? If this process could make a 10 year, taste like a 12 year, or other similar change, the distilleries would be capitalizing on this process. The explanation referred to the limited porosity of the fibers of the slats of a barrel, compared to how the "key" had very exposed and porous fibers, allowing the whiskey to interact with the wood much more. I haven't found anyone that I thought might be better equipped to settle this question. Please humor me.
