Bobcat T870 fuel pickup tube replacement

I am helping a bud on his 2019 T770. We cannot keep it primed. I am under the impression there is a one way check ball on end of the pickup tube. At some point Bobcat went to an electric fuel pump.

There wasn’t on ours which is a 15 or 18 maybe. There’s a check valve either at the primer bulb or in the plumbing where the return line ties in
