Yet. At the end of Long Black Coat, the last couple of seconds, there's a scream of some kind. Subtle, you have to listen for it but it's definitely there. It could be the guitarist taking his fingers off the frets but whatever it is Bob left it in there for a reason. Your thoughts?

Crickets are chirpin' the water is high There's a soft cotton dress on the line hangin' dry Window wide open African trees Bent over backwards from a hurricane breeze Not a word of goodbye not even a note She gone with the man in the long black coat Somebody seen him hangin' around At the old dance hall on the outskirts of town He looked into her eyes when she stopped him to ask If he wanted to dance he had a face like a mask Somebody said from the bible he'd quote There was dust on the man in the long black coat Preacher was talking there's a sermon he gave He said every man's conscience is vile and depraved You cannot depend on it to be your guide When it's you who must keep it satisfied It ain't easy to swallow it sticks in the throat She gave her heart to the man in the long black coat There are no mistakes in life some people say It is true sometimes you can see it that way But people don't live or die people just float She went with the man in the long black coat There's smoke on the water it's been there since June Tree trunks uprooted beneath the high crescent moon Feel the pulse and vibration and the rumbling force Somebody is out there beating on a dead horse She never said nothing there was nothing she wrote She gone with the man in the long black coat

HI Jackie..... I hope you recite this ..loudly and theatrically.....all over town...as you walk around....it is gospel... I haven't learned this one yet....thank dog...more to learn.. but .....I know all the rest of his canon he is my jesus ..... At 10, bringing it all back home....was playing so much on my record player, my mother threw it in the fire....( it was my weird uncle's....)... I had already memorized it though...and now....almost 60......most of his canon....is my companion...when the rest of this planet...wants to burn stuff.lol He has always been someone who sees it all......as I do....and it aint a real popular view.... But once you see truth......How?....does anyone live a life under any other rules???

I just listened to an interview where it was mention that Lanois asked Dylan ' Bob, Would You by any Chance have Lyrics for this Music? ' and Dylan answered ' Yes I do have something! Afterwards Dylan read it over the Music and followed with the 'singing' - one take - and that was IT - Pure Genius at work !!!

I knew someone once who was a great musician. Now, he wasn't a great crafter, maker like Bobby here. What was great about him was that he sat with his guitar day in and day out. He felt that guitar everyday; that guitar got old with him. He once told me that music was medicine to him. It didn't matter if it was good or bad - he just needed it to survive. One day he says to me, 'What if you wake up one afternoon and from your window you see that your pharmacy no longer exists? What then? I'm learning to make my own medicine. I will do things to the air with this guitar.'

It's not just the line but the way he sets it up. 'There are no mistakes in life some people say And it's true sometimes you can see it that way...' should lead to a discussion of maybe free will v predestination, but he takes it to another level and delivers a fairly stinging put-down of the world at large. A knockout punch.

Dylan's song writing is always rooted in reality, which is offen grim as we all know, and he doesn't make it more pretty than it is. Dylan is the Rembrandt of contempary modern music.

Oh my! The shimmery sound, the reverb, Bob's gravelly drawl! The whole album has strange otherworldly feel. It sits a strange and liminal realm! Not somewhere you want to live, but maybe a place you visit between dream and waking... It's just a beautiful, odd fantasy that you can never quite come back to once you wake up.

Dylan had always been known for his lyrics, (unfortunately and unfairly. I mean he could sing like the best of them with that voice that came from you and me as Don Maclean would sing. And his musicianship has grown exponentially). But, you can almost see this tall, hidden man with dust flying from his coat. I have always considered the man in this song to be a more mature, wiser and older Jack of Hearts from Lily, Rosemary.......
