Purple Sage Blessings that’s awesome to hear. At that time my experience with local churches & Christian book shops in terms of Bob Dylan’s 3 gospel/Christian albums was disappointing. They didn’t & wouldn’t stock these albums & fellow believers were critical of & judgemental about his testimony & his confession of faith. Additionally, many of his fans were enraged at the same time. Interesting to note that Jesus had the both the establishment & the worldly against Him also. I’d say this is when we know that we’re dealing with a true & genuine work of God when these things come against it!

A classic example of the songwriting prowess of Bob Dylan. He is "The Poet", His given nickname, but for me its his lyrics that cut through the noise like a razor sharp double edged sword. His understanding of songwriting goes way beyond the higher levels of the craft. He understands the human condition so well, his words are like missiles aimed right at the heart of it. Definitely a must listen for anyone interested in the craft of songwriting. Cheers...!

But as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.” I saw that and immediately thought of this song. “You gotta serve somebody.”

It was unbelievable in the 70's. Dylan and Jesus! I left the Stones, Lou Reed, Pink Floyd, Velvet Undergroud and the ambiance of that time. Because Jesus touched me and healed me. Is was so glad with this song and still.

Where precisely is Jesus in this song? If Dylan wanted to praise Jesus he would have mentioned his name. He didn't. Its a great song and one of his best please don't demean the poet that wrote it. The words are quite CLEAR. Dylan mentions The Lord and the Devil and Timmy, Bobby, Zimmy, R.J. and Ray. Never mentioned Jesus once. . . and why would he?

@@marcushale678 Dylan doesn't want to lose his fanbase that hasn't found their way YET. So he intelligently leads them towards the light without them even knowing it. He speaks of Jesus throughout all of his music leading up to his newest releases...if you don't hear it then that is on you my brother...

God gives us freedom of choice. I think this Dylan song sums up the decision that we all have to make. "It may be the devil or it may be the Lord but you're gonna have to serve somebody."

Listen to Precious Angel which follows this on the album. I think those are the best background vocals on any of his songs.

I have listened hundreds of beautiful songs by Bob Dylan. Every song has its own mellowness. If I let allow to choose only one song to play, I will choose - Gotta Serve Somebody. This song made me addiction of Bob Dylan in late 80s.

My first Bob Dylan album in 1987. I bought it because of "man gave names" and wasn't sure what I was going to find. Then I heard this and was hooked on the spot forever... What's most mesmerising about Dylan is this incredible energy he puts in his singing. Another element worth mentioning is that Dylan's writing is very accessible to non-native english speakers like I am (I'm french). There's always a couple of words in any song I can easily remember and relate to. It may sound quite obvious but it doesnt goes the same with Neil Young or Leonard Cohen... Dylan just reaches your soul like no other. He is my favourite artist of all time.

_Maybe livin' in another country, under another name_ For me that line, its delicious rhythm cascading up and then down, along with its subject matter, along with its notes, is by far the greatest pleasure in the song. Golden.

Yes it's a very special song I got bad news today my kidneys have stopped and the Dr said I would have to go on dialysis or ride it out I went with my mother in law for several years for her treatments and they were hard on her so either way I'm going to die soon. My son told me to look up this song and listen to it because I don't have any ideal how to think about passing

Why need to trash anyone? It would be as inappropriate as a born-again Christian cueing up a Led Zeppelin tune on here, because they like the music, then trashing the band for what they supposedly are into; and, trashing their fans for being okay with the rumors.
