Oak Mountain High School Band - The 2016 Halftime Show

For the 2016 Marching Season, the OMHS Spirit of Cahaba Marching Band performed "Red Sky at Night - Sailor's Delight". The show featured music from Russian Sailor's Dance, Legend of the One Eyed Sailor, and Themes from Pirates of the Caribbean. The Spirit of Cahaba participated in two marching competitions this season. On September 24, 2016 at the Sparks in the Park Marching Contest in Birmingham, AL the band earned Superior Ratings in all Captions with Best in Class 4A Drum Major and Percussion along with Best 3A/4A Band and was named the Grand Champion. The video featured here is from October 1, 2016 at the Lake Martin Invitational Marching Contest in Alexander City, AL. OMHS Band earned Superior Ratings in all Captions along with Best in Open Class Drum Major, Percussion, Color Guard, Dance Line, and Band. Additionally, from all the 26 bands at the Contest, Oak Mountain earned Best High Brass, Best Low Brass, Best Woodwinds, the Highest Marching Score, the Highest Music Score and Most Entertaining Band! Congratulations to all the students, directors, staff, and the entire band booster organization for their hard work, dedication, and support! Props to two sections whose parts and performances were spectacular. The Mellophones were just plain awesome. Loved hearing their roar throughout the show. They are the thread that pulls all the voices together in my opinion, and this coming from a low brass guy. And the trills thrilled! Every show has to have mellophone trills! Then there were the Sousaphones. What a foundation to build a show on! Honorable mention goes to the bass drum line. OMG the splits!

4 years ago I was a freshman trombone playing here my memories with the Oak Mountain band are my most cherished and memorable in my life. So many great people came together and worked hard to produce shows like these for years I’m grateful for my time spent with them thank you

Everybody loves paint-peeling moments in a show, and there are plenty of them in this one. But there are two subtle moments in this show that I find personally impactful. The first involves the four Sousaphone notes played at the end of the trumpet duet in the Pirates of the Caribbean segment. That third note is soooo intense and moving, and my ears so want to hear a gong right there. The second moment comes at the end of the jazz run in the Pirates of the Caribbean segment. That Trombone horns-up and rotation to front makes me think of a formation of British marines bringing their muskets to bear, which is emphasized by the snare work beforehand. This is obviously a perfect allusion for the Pirates of the Caribbean segment.

I get literal chills every time I watch this during the last movement of this show, specifically when the drill depicts the ship and the cannon fires.

I'm the first chair trombone from Jemison. We won best in class Band, Majorettes, and Drum Major. All 1's. Most Entertaining Overall band. We played Don't Let the Sun Go Down On Me, Saturday Night's Alright for Fighting, Creep, Thriller, Aquarius, and Let the Sunshine in. We were a 2A band this year, but we're expanding quickly. I hope to be competing with this band in a few years.
