I really enjoy your reviews. Even though I can't get any of the cars because I live in the States I like how your reviews are from a "Can I live with this car" perspective. I wish, though, that all EV reviews would resist the temptation to talk about how long it takes to charge to full. Rarely do EV owners do that. If you were driving to the Rally School you would stop on the motorway and charge up just enough to get you back to that charger. And then charge up just enough to get you home. So the 45 min time to charge, in most cases, is down to 15 min or so. And after an hour and half or so of driving who doesn't need a break. Most EV owners "Charge hop." I understand this would be quite different in the West of Ireland but using your trip as an example that's what most EV's would do.

@@BobFlavinVideo In what way don't they work? Mine works just fine. Couldn't be happier with the distinct lack of physical knobs to clutter up the dash. As to the safety you just need to learn where things are on them; just like any car when you buy it you need to find all the buttons and switches; same with the touchscreen; just find the bits you need or wait till you are stopped. Nothing on the touchscreen needs to be touched while you're moving.

I agree with you Bob regarding the screens and the problems of safety. Lane assist is the most dangerous thing on Irish country roads. I was driving South on the M3 using adaptive cruise control, as I passed the Navan exit my ID3 read the 80kmh speed limit and dramatically reduced my speed by 40 clicks! So I don't use ACC or lane assist any more.

Great review Bob, I have to say I agree with you on the touch screen thing though I'm thankful most of the controls on my Kadjar are knobs but my wife used to have a Peugeot that had the heating controls on the touch screen and I thought it was immensely fiddly and laggy to use particularly when driving. Having said that I've watched your review, Nobby's and indeed Cars Ireland's review and I fully agree with you, I'd go electric on my next car if they were cheaper but the fact is they're too expensive and that's even in the North where I live plus the charging issue too means I'll still given the mileage I do be going diesel for my next car.

Thanks for the review @Bob Flavin. Saw the Enyaq in a dealership in Naas a few days ago and, I must say I was impressed by the interior build quality and the looks. The exterior is something that may grow on me as not convinced yet. Hope they sort pricing as it's no longer an affordable car. By 2020 most major players will have +1 EV so that may result in prices dropping. At present for the 80 model with a few extras and after the subsidy, price is some 57K for me (aspirational) so very steep! With that money, you are in BMW, Audi and Tesla land...

Great review Bob! The Enyaq was on the shortlist for my next car (which consisted of the Enyaq, the Hyundai Ioniq 5 and the Kia EV6), but I ultimately ordered a Kia EV6 (which they say will be delivered in October). I know your story of the long trip away from the south east was serving a point, but I do have to come to the defense of Monaghan as there are 2 50KW 'fast' chargers at the Circle K in Monaghan town. In fact, they may have been the first fast chargers installed north of Dublin apart from the M1 service station (about 5 years ago and upgraded 2 years ago), predating Dundalk, Navan etc. These were the closest fast chargers to where I live (75km away) until some were installed in Kells, County Meath (20km away) last year. I live on the Cavan/Meath border but I 'work' in Monaghan. My office (which I haven't seen in 14 months) is only 1/2 kilometer from the Circle K. There is still a long way to go but the charging station map has improved a lot in the last 2 years.

I will be taking my older Leaf to Ireland as soon as the current situation allows and beyond the main cities, there does seem to be a total lack of fast chargers. Plenty of 22WK AC chargers but as my car has 6kw onboard, not exactly that enticing. I wonder if the B&Bs and Hotels should be given a grant to install slow chargers for all / some of their guests so offset the lack of rapids. This would at least make holidays easily doable if relaxed.

It's partly a marketing issue too though. The purchase price is higher, but the running costs more than make up for it. Most people buy on PCP or other finance so if you count all your monthly costs, including fuel, servicing and road tax, these can be better value than a diesel equivalent that costs €7K less over the life of the car. The way things are going, I'd fear a little for the resale value of ICE cars in 3-5 years too.
@stevencampbell1150
@stevencampbell1150 3 жыл бұрын
@@beefiron I think you're potentially wrong regarding the sale of ICE cars in 3-5 years time certainly in the UK in the North where I live, reason being for those of us doing big miles on the motorway diesel will still be king and therefore there'll always be a market for them.
@beefiron
@beefiron 3 жыл бұрын
@@stevencampbell1150 I think they'll become more niche. I could see higher road tax on ICE cars and higher fuel taxes as a way of moving people to BEVs. As for high mileage drivers, at 125kw charging, you can add 250km in 16 minutes. If you have a car that goes 400km, as a lot of the newer ones do now, let alone in 5 years, that's 650km in a day with just 16 minutes of charging. Tell me whom that doesn't work for?
@timaustin2000

There's no excuse on EV car prices. Battery prices have CRASHED in the last few years: car companies are simply milking the consumer and deliberately attempting to keep their EV sales niche to protect their legacy investment.

@timaustin2000
@timaustin2000 3 жыл бұрын
@@BobFlavinVideo don't get me wrong, I still think people should buy them, as the Total Cost of Ownership is much lower (and PCP and Lease deals deal with depreciation rather than the cost of the car so the monthlies are not all that much more, truth be told). But car companies could make them cost competitive today if they chose to.
@ricardomartins1783
@ricardomartins1783 3 жыл бұрын
When asked about the limited subsudies for purchase an EV in my country, the minister replyed there was no more reason for electric to be cars that expensive. Meaning these companies are just making prices as long subsidies are arround and protecting the price of all the other cars they produce. The ID4 is cheaper in the USA vs Europe and they offer 3 years of free charging on Electrify America. In Europe they 'have' IONITY and none is more expensive than those chargers.
@eyesofvenus
@eyesofvenus Жыл бұрын
The issue is more to do with the fact that EV's rely heavily on computer chips and there's currently a global shortage of them. The price is more reflective of the scarcity. I've heard of people being given wait times of over 10 months for an Enyaq.

Chip shortages are not helping either - and there is pent up demand from last year that is enabling car makers to charge more.

Nicer than ID4 on inside but way more expensive to get that spec ID4 nicer on outside particularly the first edition I bought Either way Vw audi Skoda seat will do alright Btw not a single issue with my ID4 1st edition so far Averaging 17.5kwh/100km or 468km real range over 2000km Touchscreen knobs etc - zero issue - just set everything initially and off you go I just sit in now and drive don’t even need to touch the touch screen

Just bought a business edition from the next set of cars. You’re estimated range is great help. I was expecting about 450km real wolf range. Plenty in my opinion. No way I’m going to be driving to Monaghan and back in one day. 😂
@pato10111
@pato10111 3 жыл бұрын
@@user-ms3xp9ep5q if you were charging over night you’d have a full battery the next morning correct? 450km plus is quite a lot of range so it’s unlikely you would need to charge the car even for a long commute between counties and back. Am I right in saying that? I actually don’t see why people would really need to use super chargers unless they were travelling across the country and back on the same day. Am I being naive?

I understand your points about charging-network and the fact these cars being heavily too overpriced. The electric car is still, for me at least, a good second car. We need two cars in our family because of work and family situation. With a car that can handle a good 300+ kilometers it will meet almost everyone's daily needs. That means you can charge at home (which is cheaper). A couple of days of the week I drive a total of 200 km/day. To see my need for daily travel go from approximately 8,75 Euro/100km to approximately 2,43 Euro/100km would be quite nice.

Bob as you know most folk are fortunate to charge at home while they sleep so there is none of this waiting for 45mins at services. I appreciate after driving a press car down from Dublin to McDonagha's there may be a need to charge it prior to doing a review, but most folks with a BEV will just be doing their daily milage from home charging. Plaza not needed. :)

Great review, absolutely agree with all the comments you made regarding EV’s. Just awaiting delivery of a Cupra Formentor costing £40,000. I can’t get anywhere near what that car offers in an EV unless I spend at least 50% more. I would like to make the move to EV’s but far too expensive for what a typical consumer needs. I know you liked the Formentor, with your knowledge and experience currently what EV choices are their as comparable alternatives to it? Or a Ford Focus for that matter. Could make an interesting video.

Look at leasing, you can get the 1.5 for around £280 a month if you shop around. This is my first lease car, hopefully some sense will come to the EV market in 3 years time and I can then decide what’s best for me then.

I don't know about the Irish market but the UK market gets a bizarre specs that need bumping up for things that should be standard. What seems to a vaguely good value big EV becomes £40+ very quickly. My favourites being having to pay for 125kw charging and USBs in the back.

If Skoda had the opportunity to reorganise the under bonnet space to enable a spare wheel, jack etc to be carried then I would consider them clever, tucking an ice scraper and an umbrella into specific locations is not. I keep an umbrella and ice scraper in my boot, always have.

I really respect your opinion in making EVs more cheaper and affordable. Tesla's goal was supposed to be exactly like that, but it looks like they are going the other direction. I understand due to inflation and "supply issues" that what probably is causing the price hike. But people are ready to get rid of their ICE cars. Petrol or Gasoline prices are not going to go down anymore. 2 years from now, you will be saying, " Gas is only $5. It's cheap. Let me fill up my tank." Hopefully the push for renewable energy will become more rapid.

Which leaves me wondering how the two guys who, in 2016, drove a Nissan Leaf from John O Groats to Lands End - and -back again - in 48 hours, a distance of 1653 miles, actually managed it? Or the Tesla owner, who posted a video on KZbin of his trip from Scotland to his holiday destination In Cornwall. A distance of over 600 miles. He stopped just twice to charge. Once for just over an hour, the second time for 25 minutes........ Your perceptions need adjusting a little.
