June 2024 saw the deployment of 4 B-52 bombers in to RAF Fairford UK. Great to have these dinosaurs of the sky back in action at Fairford. Awesome sights, sounds and smells..

Boeing engineers were brilliant when they designed the Buff because they included a design that would allow for enhancements as times and the threat changed. It is not the same B-52- new fuselage, new avionics, new engines (Rolls Royce) and a new mission, Standoff with Cruise Missiles. No aircraft has the capability with a massive payload to fly long distances 8,000 miles and even longer with air refueling and launch a multitude of cruise missiles without flying over the target. An engineering marvel that can fly 300 feet above the ground and launch weapons from a distance.

Reminds me of when we brought 3 white belly BUFFs to RAF Marham back 40+ years ago to show we could quickly stage nukes. It just happened to be right after Reagan threw his support to the Brits during the Falklands crisis. Whenever we went in a local pup once they heard our American accents we did not have to pay for a pint the rest of the night.

Aerodynamically the buff is a remarkable oddity, pitch and yaw control surfaces narrower than the trim tabs on conventional jets of similar size, 8 engines, roll surfaces far bigger than found on any aircraft and those insanely, I’m practically massive flaps, even at take off setting are hard to get one’s head around, the buckling and wrinkled skin at key stress points that would see any conventional aircraft sent to a scrap heap, crabbing staggered narrow track landing gear…just an absolute show stopping anomaly no matter how you look at it.

Hope we don't but we may need them if some individuals keep listening to the punk comedian Zelinski. Putin can take a flying leap also but as it is the world should be careful what it wishes for. Nevertheless thanks Brits and the people of Fairford, UK for hosting our buffs. Long may we have the intent to kick ass together.
