As a Scottish person, my take on Ellie's question is: Scottish people are pretty proud of their Scottish identity and accents. We don't normally appreciate non-Scots attempting a Scottish accent (because you can't do it), but in this case, it feels like Ru is recognising and celebrating Lawrence's Scottish background but not Ellie's. And it feels like favouritism. Which it is, obviously. There may also be a West Coast / East Coast issue there (Lawrence is West, Ellie is East), and West Coast Scots are often seen by outsiders as the "real" or "stereotypical" Scots. If I was Ellie it would bug me too. That said, if she want's to get noticed, she needs to be better. She's not that engaging or funny; her outfits are EXCELLENT, tho. Lawrence is beating her and that must feel pretty bad.

This is what I thought was going on as soon as it happened, I was surprised that Americans think she was vying for Rupaul to give her a nickname or anything. It was definitely just because she's also Scottish. Ellie Diamond isn't as easy to say in an exaggerated Scottish accent as Lawrence Chaney is though
@kidkytes62333 жыл бұрын
Yup! This is exactly it! I'm Scottish to and it was absolutely just Ellie wanting to be recgonised by RuPaul on the same level that he is acknowledging Lawrence. We as Scots defo feel pushed aside whenever it comes to the "UK" being seen outside our country. We're not as patriotic as other countries but we defo have pride as being Scottish. It's one of the reasons why we all generally talk about our country as "Bonnie old Scotland!". Also I'm so glad that Lawrence and Ellie said that there literally is NO MONEY in Scotland because queens hardly ever get paid. For years they've been given nothing for performing and putting on shows. Mainly because of the hold Lady Munter put on the drag scene in Scotland when she started booking Ru girls. PAY YOUR ENTERTAINERS PEOPLE! SUPPORT LOCAL QUEENS!
@BagOfSticksFork3 жыл бұрын
you're not wrong but also lawrence chaney has the sort of scottish accent americans tend to like while ellie's accent is less familiar and also... look, no one likes a dundee accent. Ru's first statement was literally her acknowleding that they're both scottish. She literally said both the scotts together again. This is a very American reaction to Ginny leaving, we as a British audience understand it more. The British audience is a lot more forgiving, and we can understand Ginny’s need to keep her integrity. @@PolloMaster1996 having integrity means remaining true to your morals and sense of self, and not changing that for others. The judges just wanted Ginny to change her drag. Not evolve her drag, not edit her drag; change her drag to their idea of drag which is all about looking as glamours and biologically female as possible. Ginny had true integrity and refused to change herself. She knew her style of drag was only going to continue to be put down by the judges, so she left. That whole “quitting is the worst thing a person could do” sounds like a stereotypical American football coach in a cliche TV movie. That’s such an American attitude. Unpopular opinion: One thing I have to say about drag race Uk is that the American judges unfortunately are ignorant of what makes uk drag it’s own unique thing and from their commentary it’s clear that they don’t want the next uk drag super star but instead they want the next American version of a uk drag super star. If the judges maybe had a bit of history on these girls they may have been more respectful of their drag instead of just dragging it. I would be curious to know if Ru or Michelle have actually been to a variety of UK drag shows. Ginny and Joe Black are icons in the scene and it’s very telling that some of the judges don’t ‘get it’ . Ginny leaving the way she did was a moment of clarity because it shows that the contestants are there to showcase their best drag and unfortunately the show is pushing them to be amaericanised. Joe Black has really been talking about some of these issues on his Instagram. I think season one is proof of this, Baga should’ve won but The Viv was a more palatable choice for Ru and the American audience. It may have been disrespectful of her to walk out the way she did but after weeks of disrespect from the American judges I don’t hold it against her. Canada’s drag race panel might be a little inexperienced and harsh but at least they have an understanding of the country and culture they are judging where as I don’t believe Ru and Michele do, and if they do they aren’t presenting those criticisms to us only their somewhat biased American view. That’s my two cents.

This is so interesting to me because I find that a lot of Americans considered Ginny disrespectful, whereas I thought it was an iconic tv moment! She was never in this to win the competition, and she probably would've lost the lip sync - it's not what she does and Ru was done with her. So she used the moment to make A Moment. No one is going to forget it, she gets more attention, she makes some coin. It was a smart move! And I gagged! (at the end of the day the show is entertainment and I was entertained by this twist!)

I thought it was great TV too but I can see how it was disrespectful. Kind of like when Valentina refused to take off her mask to properly lip sync. Especially after already going out of her comfort zone and trying the sexy feminine stick, which she couldn't fully grow into and perfect in such a short span of time in order to win the competition. I think she could've won that lipsync and stayed on if she really wanted to, but at what price? Sister hasn't really made a big impression yet and she seemed like she would've been extremely devastated to go home at this point. And Ginny had realized she herself wouldn't get much more out of staying in the competition. Her exit was both punk-rock and gracious and it made for some good TV.
