Car commercials in the 1960s reflected a transformative era in the automotive industry and American culture. Here is a summary of car commercials from that decade: 1. Muscle Cars and Performance: The 1960s saw the rise of the muscle car, and car commercials often highlighted powerful engines, speed, and exhilarating driving experiences. Brands like Chevrolet, Ford, and Dodge promoted models like the Chevy Camaro, Ford Mustang, and Dodge Charger, emphasizing speed, sleek design, and raw horsepower. 2. Family-Friendly: Many car commercials in the 1960s targeted families, showcasing spacious interiors, comfortable seating, and safety features. Brands like Chevrolet and Ford promoted their sedans and station wagons as ideal vehicles for family outings, with an emphasis on reliability and convenience. 3. Glamour and Luxury: Luxury car manufacturers like Cadillac and Lincoln aimed to evoke a sense of sophistication and elegance in their commercials. These advertisements showcased features such as leather interiors, advanced technology for the time, and smooth, comfortable rides. 4. Freedom and Adventure: Some car commercials tapped into the spirit of adventure and freedom that characterized the 1960s. Convertibles, in particular, were depicted as vehicles that could take drivers on exciting journeys along scenic routes, often with upbeat music and carefree imagery. 5. Endorsements and Icons: Celebrity endorsements were not as common as they are today, but some car commercials featured famous personalities, such as race car drivers or Hollywood stars, to lend credibility and appeal to their products. 6. Technological Advancements: As the automotive industry introduced innovative features like power steering, automatic transmissions, and improved safety features, commercials highlighted these advancements to persuade consumers of the benefits of owning the latest and greatest cars. 7. Style and Design: Car commercials in the 1960s often emphasized the unique style and design elements of their vehicles. Manufacturers sought to distinguish their cars through distinctive body shapes, chrome detailing, and distinctive color options. 8. Nostalgia: Some car commercials played on nostalgia, harking back to earlier decades or celebrating classic car designs. This nostalgia was used to create an emotional connection with potential buyers. 9. Jingles and Catchphrases: Many 1960s car commercials featured catchy jingles and memorable catchphrases to make their products more memorable and appealing to consumers. In summary, 1960s car commercials were a reflection of the diverse and evolving automotive landscape of the time. They used various themes and techniques to captivate audiences, ranging from the allure of performance and luxury to the practicality of family-friendly vehicles. These commercials not only showcased the cars themselves but also captured the spirit and aspirations of an era marked by social change and technological advancement.

It was 1970 or 71, he put $10.00 on the dash and that was a lot of $$ back then and said when I say go you grab it and it's yours. I was hell yea!! He said go & he floored it!! I loved the whole thing! I was 10 years old in 1965, and was already a mini Gearhead. I knew everything about all the Big Three brands and models. My favorites were from the Ford Motor Company and the Chrysler Corporation. I really liked Mustangs, in 1966 my oldest brother bought a new black on black Mustang, it had a 289 4 barrel carburetor, duel exhaust and a 4-speed manual transmission. All his friends had Mustangs. As soon as I graduated high school in 1972, I bought a used 69 Mach l. A 351 Windsor, 4 barrel Motorcraft carburetor and an FMX automatic transmission. It had power steering and front power disc brakes. I thought it was the best-looking car ever made, and I still feel the same way now. My parents owned a 69 Chrysler 300, 4 door hardtop with the famous Chrysler 440 under hood. A very cool and powerful car. I have only ever owned Fords, Mercurys and Lincolns, and l Ioved all of them. Thanks for sharing this car commercials from the late 60s. Please, keep them coming!

When I was in HS in the mid '70s one of my best friends (from a Ford family) had a '69 Mach I 428 CJ 4 speed, red and black like the one in the commercial, with a shaker hood and rear window slats. He paid $2,000 for it in about '75. At the same time, being from a Chevy family I had a '69 SS 396 (L78) Camaro, full cam, 4 speed, 4:11 posi, etc. I got it in '76 for $1600. Just a couple of HS kids with future classics. We used to cruise the strip but mine was wound much tighter and was more ill tempered than his mostly stock CJ. It didn't like stop and go traffic much, which caused it to run hot, and it got only 4 mpg on expensive (46 cents a gallon) 100+ octane, so we'd make an occasional pass down the strip but usually just backed them into spots at one fast food joint or another along the strip and let all the girls in Pintos, Gremlins, and Mavericks cruise past us. And yes, I know exactly what you mean. Out of the 40+ vehicles I've owned since then, that SS is at the top of the list of the ones I'd love to have back.

When a Ferrari 308 gtb gave me a thumbs up and a pretty woman new Anchor waived I should have found a way to keep it. Joan Parker, the Dodge Fever girl was one of my many 60's crushes. Back in the mid 60's I was watching an old movie from the 30's on TV with my dad and when he saw a convertible coupe, he said that was his first car he bought when he got back from the war. I told him he should have kept because it would be worth a lot of money now. Which got me thinking about today's cars and thought they won't be valuable in the future. As you can see, I'm a bad prognosticator.

I can still remember the new car smell of my Dad's 1969 Mercury Marquis with the 429CI big block. He was a conservative Brit. So he surprised the hell out of me one day when he lit up the rear tires and left burnout ribbons for 50 feet down the road.

60s cars were all the rage but nothing tops the lugshurry of passing the grey pupon in a early 80s landow roofed Crysler LaBarron. Plus with a 90hp four banger doing 0-60 in just over 100 seconds its also a sleeper.

That’s super clean! Back in my younger days I bought a well used but well kept 87 Limited with Leather and the 307. That was one of the most comfortable cars I’ve ever owned. I left her mostly stock. Unfortunately the high mileage caught up with the transmission.
