I can argue a wait period for violent felons, but for somebody who commit tax evasion, you should have your rights restored once jail and parole are finished. If you’re too dangerous to own a gun, you’re too dangerous to be on the streets. Besides, a felon will just get one anyway. In some states, it’s easier for somebody to purchase one “off the books”. Some states you must wait months for your pistol permit, pay fees to obtain one (thus discriminating against poor people), attend an 8 hour class that’s usually >100 bucks. Imagine if these laws were also enforced for other rights. “Want to attend church? Pay for and wait for your permit to practice religion.” “Cops at your door? Hope you have your permit to exercise your 4th amendment right.” “In jail? You better have taken the class and paid the state for your permit so that they cannot administer cruel and unusual punishment.” “All women must take a class on civics before voting.”

Why do cops let these felons continue to talk on the phone? They could be calling for their back up, warning other criminals, etc.... if there were other people present they would separate them. This is no different. And the firearms should stay with the police until they can verify they are rightfully hers and not been used in any crime (and Im a responsible gun owner and would never leave my firearms unlocked in an open trunk. You must take the breathalyzer or a blood test or it’s an automatic suspension of your drivers license for one year. No one hardly ever beats it in court either. Only those with a lot of money and time to fight it in court, demand a jury trail and pray you get a very sympathetic jury. Which usually doesn’t happen. It’s cheaper to take the DUI and move on. 1st offense DUI, assuming you haven’t crashed and hurt someone, is 3 month suspension, pretty heavy fines and probation. Refusal of BAC is one year plus fines.
