It's always more the positioning of the tail, rather than wagging itself. This dog had a very loose, relaxed tail that wasn't very high up in the air - a clear sign that he's not a real threat.

at around 8:55 great advice - don't constantly shower your dog with attention whenever they do well with other dogs, all that does is increase the excitement and can inadvertently make them go over threshold. Better to let them do their thing and learn how to go about interacting calmly with other dogs without being interrupted with human praise. Honestly can apply to all training, making too much of a fuss over your dog when they do the right thing can make them break commands early and teaches bad habits

Our GSD is a lot like this. He's very sociable and playful, but is a bit much for some dogs and some owners. I'm learning so much from you about reading him, reading the other dogs and even reading the other owners to make group play as enjoyable as possible for everyone. @Beckman's Dog Training : I wanted to thank you for all the information you have provided. I own a small dog boarding business and most of the dogs come for weekend stays. Most of them don't have issues. They are friendly, happy, and the worst thing I've had to deal with was separation anxiety. But there is a minority of dogs I get who are fear biters and forward aggressive. I can't spend my entire weekend babying and rewarding those problem dogs so that I can take them for their walks, so I often implement your methods. The owners are often impressed when they return to pick up their dog on how calm and obedient there dogs are in my hands. Their dogs always return better than they came. I like to train them basic manners through positive reinforcement, but bad behaviors are never excepted in my kennel and I can't spend forever "training it out of them." Your methods make it possible for me to make behavioral changes within just a few hours so that the weekend can be more enjoyable for everyone. Thank You!!

I really appreciate that you made this comment - I work at a daycare/boarding facility, but I just started. It gives me hope that sticking with the method will help make my day easier, and most importantly be beneficial to the dog so that they can have a good day. With 20 dogs in a room, it's just impossible to take care of individual needs.

Very good demo Joel. I don't go to dog parks, one reason being most of the dogs and owners there are out of control, undisciplined and the owners are arrogant. So, unfortunately my dog does not have any opportunities to interact with other dogs, except when I walk him.

Dog parks can become boxing rings. Dog beaches are good because you can just keep walking and the domineering dog has to chose to abandon its owners to continue the pirsuit. Some owners have such little influence over their dog that their dog will sometimes abandon them, but you find even the dumbest owners find that unacceptable and eventually even they with retrieve their dog and get it off yours. I prefer linear walks like a beach, lots of distractions, and if I go there at the same time everyday the dogs all become familiar with each other - it's much more relaxed.

I’m learning so much! Especially that owners need to be vigilant. No matter how good or bad our dog is with other dogs, things can change in an instant. We need to stand there watching the dogs, not the owners. I’m happy to do the clap and “HEY!!” at another dog being a jerk to my dog. If the owner reacts I just say “that was looking a little tense, so I was just breaking their train of thought’.

I started paying more attention to my dog’s play after watching Joel’s videos and correcting him, he has a tendency to be bossy at times. This technique works, he started looking for that crazy lady who was going to grab him and stopped 😊 I was a ‘let them sort it’ person previously, not knowing any better, I’m afraid 😳 Sorry to the other dogs!

Joel, thank you. Since finding your videos three/four weeks ago, I’ve gone from avoiding walking my dog( two incidents of being dragged by my dog!) to being able to confidently walk around my neighborhood to going for the first time yesterday to a public walking park with other people walking their dogs, children asking to come pet my dog, etc. I was sooo in a “funk” weeks ago. I needed a quick, effective fix, you gave it to me. I had hired a “positive” re enforcement trainer, but she didn’t seem to understand the severity, nor the risk of me being hurt (female, age 61, 5’0 tall). I’m constantly learning here in Lyndhurst, Ohio. Keep up the great work. Laura

Really well done! No nonsense. Gives a great sense of how carefully you have to watch dog body language. Most people just don't really get what it all means, and either over-react or under-react to behaviors. Especially important, as the trainer says -- to do some social interaction training if you want to take your dog to dog parks or just walk their dog without being surprised when fights start. Hey Joel, love the videos and all the opportunities to learn about canine body language especially when it comes to aggression. In the law enforcement world we call them pre-assault indicators. I have an 11 month old intact male Rottweiler. He’s basically a dream of a dog. I’m constantly being asked about his breeder and his training because of how great he is. The only issue, and I’ve only seen it twice, is that if a dog acts with real aggression (not just dominance displays) towards him, or even worse, towards me, he has zero patience for it. The first time was on a hike we came across an owner with a German Shepherd. They dogs met and everything seemed great. Relaxed body language, sniffing and a play bow from both dogs. I went to pet the other dog and it snapped at my hand and barked, lips curled and jumped towards my face. My dog went at the other dog HARD. If I hadn’t grabbed his harness or had the leash attached to his collar, there’s no doubt in my mind he would have choked himself unconscious trying to get to that other dog. The other time was at a dog park and he was playing a husky. Again everything great. He rolls over and playfully submitted to the husky. When he ended up on top however, the husky bit him in the face and drew blood on his jowls. My dog jumped back and yelped and then went after the husky but thankfully I happened to be close enough to grab my dog before he got a hold of him, but it was barking/snapping/growling and lots of saliva flying everywhere from my dog trying to go at the husky that I was only keeping away with my foot until his owner got him. I’m not sure how to address these with my dog because they’re incredibly rare, and I’m also not sure I want to truly correct that. My dog has never started anything, and handles simple dominance displays well without escalating. He’s 99.99% of the time a playful puppy. I don’t want to punish my dog for defending himself after being bit, and I definitely don’t have a problem with him defending me. I’m just a bit concerned with the intensity coupled with his power and athleticism when he does get pushed to that. Am I wrong for this? Any advice?

I really like your videos. Especially since I'm in FL so can't physically take lessons with you. And realized from them that I can't do it alone So I Just hired a trainer here who has worked at SeaWorld and Animal Kingdom as well as traing dogs for past 20 years. Totally accredited licensed and positive reinforce behavior. I started with Zac George thus time around and still use him too. But I didn't have issues with resource guarding and under socializing ( due to he got bit 3xs and Covid) so I needed help. But although I find myself saying things like " I can do this all day" and some incorporate both you and Zac stuff I need help. She praised me on how far I've come and what he knows and stated from how I was talking I knew a lot ( thank you) there is 12 weeks ahead @ 1xweek. That I hope I learn to get him to be dog again so can go places. Till then I'm going to continue watching your videos to learn as much as I can. And from Zac and my trainer cause knowledge is power.

Today my Lilly spotted an older doggie and at first she was friendly but then she turned into a more slightly aggressive stance. The owner of the other dog said that when her dog Jake was getting growled at and almost attacked by an unruly Pitty, he just played dead and then turned around and chilled like a smooth, calm and gentle dog that wasn’t about the drama.❤

This is great to watch. I recently brought my 12 week old pup to my parents place and he met their 9 year old miniature schnauzer. She is a great dog but not well socialized. She kept barking and barking whenever my pup was around and never stopped so this lead to my dog barking too which I don't like. I am trying to figure out the best way to integrate her with my pup. The only other dog she is ever around is my sister's dog (also a schnauzer) Trying to socialize a puppy with two dogs who are only familiar with each other is a challenge.

Gracious towards the long haired shepherd. I appreciate that. I did notice several opportunities missed with the Golden and the Border. Sniffing the Golden is ok, but the hovering wasn’t.(even before the Golden got up). Running in front of the Border to control it, head over the withers, etc. The Border was picking up on the Shepherds bad behavior even when humans weren’t. I’ve heard you say the other dogs reaction can clue us in.

Love seeing GSD running around happy after getting wet. My dog is like this guy but worse. It's not like he is bad with all dogs but definitely does the stare and stiff body posture at times and seems to prefer female dogs. He is unneutered, almost 2 and we definitely discussed whether neutering will help or not. There's research on pros and cons of neutering so it's not an easy decision. We would prefer to do a vasectomy instead. Seeing videos of different dogs interacting and learning body languages and when and how to intervene is super helpful.

I'm in the exact same situation. My GSD grew up right when covid struck so it was very hard to socialize him during those times and now I'm dealing with the consequences. He is a little snappy with female dogs and I have yet to introduce him to another big male dog. I am a little terrified for when that happens. Good luck to you though!

Neutering won’t magically help with aggression - that is an idea that is sold by vets to owners. Independent research has suggested limited benefit on behaviour change, the main benefit is that it stops back yard breeders. Best bet is to find a trainer and work with them in a controlled way.

Thank you for stating that dog owners need to correct their dog's bad behavior, even if it is a mild infraction. Failure to do so will likely lead to the gradual escalation of more bad behavior. I stopped taking my dogs to the dog park because so many dog owners have no concept of acceptable dog behavior. These dog owners also have no awareness that they are responsible for their dog's bad behavior. Every time I ask a dog owner to get their dog under control, they typically respond, "He's just being a dog. Let them work it out." I usually answer with a question, "Would you have the same hands-off approach if your son was bullying and intimidating another boy?" I never get an answer, and the dog owner never corrects their dog. Irresponsible dog owners never learn and never train their dogs.

Love your training videos especially this one since I also have a GSD. I have a question though when is picking him up by the collar too much? I have always thought that picking up dogs by their collars can be harmful. Does this interfere with their breathing at all?

Would love to see an example of a PERSISTENTLY friendly (and respectful….with dogs anyway) dog. Mine isn’t remotely aggressive but she’s relentless with people and dogs. I just want her to give it up and relax around fun stimulation 😅 I do a lot of your leash methods and have seen improvement but she’s also very sensitive in that a softer correction means way more to her than a harsh one. I can get her to lay down around people (not so much dogs) but she’s absolutely still on a trigger and ready to party at the slightest hint of excitement.

(They shy dogs were young btw, never insecure older dogs that might turn on her) I don’t bring her to dog parks because I worry she’s too much. I am very interested and committed to body language with dogs. We have an unnutured male golden retriever, who regularly gets attacked by other (mostly male dogs-not nutured). I would love to see these kinds of videos with interactions with dogs, what kinds of behavior is to be tolerated and what is not, we are struggling. I can read my own dog but sometimes the situation comes so fast with other dogs, I would love some visual comparison. Meaning, our dog does not want fights, but there is a male tension (on both ends). Would be thankful for that. I know, usually owners approach you with their dominant dog, but in our case, our dog is the submissive kind. What then to prevent a fight in time? A fight meaning that my dog will not even bite back, but be bitten. Best regards from Germany, thanks for your great work!

What are your thoughts about correcting someone else's dog at a dog park. We have an 8 month old that is slowly being acclimated to the dog park. Last trip another dog was being overbearing. Not aggressive, just being too much. Funneling my inner Beckman, I just walked through the dog forcing it away from mine. I didn't say anything to the dog but just forced separation. Would a clap/hey marker work on a stranger's dog in a situation like this?

My first thought was no leash or muzzle necessary, but I'd use a muzzle just to be sure and let the dog free to meet and move around. The bark didn't seem agressive to me.

Is it possible to send you a video to get some feed back about what to correct between two dogs? I have a pit mix puppy between 8 and 10 weeks and my son has dauschound puppy about 12 to 14 weeks. My puppy is continually standing over and holding down their puppy which I have started correcting. My concern is that the other puppy is running up to mine and biting him and then running off and growling some of the time. I've started calling it a drive by and it's non-stop when the pups are together. Part of me thinks my dog is trying to put the other in its place but because they are both puppies my sons girlfriend ( whom i love and don't want to cause an issue with (her) dog just thinks it's puppy playing but not liking that my pup is holding hers down but thinks they will work out it and should while mine is still fairly small. I feel this is a bad idea and I need to correct my dogs behavior but she needs to also recognize that her dog needs to be corrected also. It doesn't help that I believe they are both dominant dogs to begin with. Anyway I'm looking for an educated outside opinion on this and would like to see if sending a video is possible. Do you offer a service like this that I can sign up and pay for?

Would love to get some advice or vids on the other side of the spectrum. My dog’s trigger is literally when another dog comes and tries to hump him especially if its a dog that he’s not friends or familiar with. He has a certain amount of patience but when it breaks, he can really hurt. And we’ve experienced times where the dog that humped him got wounded. Is there a way to help him like warn off dogs that want to hump him? Similar to how female dogs like bark or shoo off male dogs that hump. Would really just want to be comfortable with him meeting dogs especially new ones. My dog is a labrador, around 32kg so he’s pretty heavy. He doesn’t hump other dogs at all, not once. Just really hates it when he gets humped, like he even senses when a dog is a humper.

Towards the end you mentioned taking the dog by the collar and not grabbing it by the skin / hair on top of the neck when doing a correction. Is it wrong to grab a dog by the scruff of the neck when correcting? I'd always understood there was some connection for a dog with the way its mother would take it by the neck in her jaws if she needed to correct it as a puppy. Although I haven't done that for a long long time, I used to do it a lot. Please tell me if that's wrong!

The curvature of the Shepherds spine at first looked like a hunt posture. It appears to be scoliosis. Am I wrong? He'll need joint/cartilage support immediately and indefinitely.

I noticed the same! Not a good back conformation... The dog is young, arthrosis and dysplasia problems to be expected😩

Its unfortunately how a lot of German shepherds are purposfully being bred to look nowadays
