AURIEMMA DEMANDS EXCELLENCE - “Me, we, my coaching staff, we put a huge premium on body language,” Auriemma said. “And if your body language is bad, you will never get in the game. Ever. I don't care how good you are. If somebody says, well, you just benched (Breanna Stewart) for 35 minutes in the Memphis game a couple of years ago. Yeah, I did. That was to motivate her for the South Carolina game the following Monday? No, it wasn't. Stewy was acting like a 12-year-old. So I put her on the bench and said sit there.”

As a former coach, I love this video! Forget X's and O's. This is a video every young basketball player should watch. And it will sink in, because, hey, it's Geno! I loved the part about a kid "looking cool," and not knowing which foot is his pivot foot.

great stuff coach. if coaches at the lower levels put fundamentals, execution and behavior ahead of wins we wouldn't have the issues he's addressing.

And this is why UConn has 11 championships in the last 22 years and a 100+ game winning streak.

Chris B I wonder if it could have anything to do with having all the best players coming out of high school.I'm sure he's a good coach, but c'mon....the level of talent he had year in and year out,its like playing against everybody with an all star team.

@@kevinkeneally4587 I'll give you that on average women can't compete with men, however, basketball is a sport. Women's basketball is a sport played by women. It's like saying Little League baseball isn't a sport because those kids couldn't hack it in the majors.

I can't tell people how important this message is. Not only is it the best way to be a teammate, player, athlete, it's the best way to coach kids. As an 18 year old coaching 11 year old lacrosse players, this is what I tried to teach every practice and game. It all boils down to "there's no I in team". And it was crazy how many parents would expect playing time just because they paid Bobby's dues. And not only is it important in sports, humbleness is a hugely important trait in life in general, I feel.

I am absolutely sure this coach shows his love of the game in every practice and in every game. He wears his love of the game on his sleeve so everyone can see it. That love of game is contagious to his players and to everyone that watches him. Don't know the guy, but I already like the guy.

I just saw a listing of the top 10 players in NCAAA Women's Basketball in every statistical category (scoring, rebounds, assists, etc) on a Website -- and I was surprised to see not even *one* UConn player on any top 10 list. And yet, look at their record this year! What does that say about the caliber of player Geno recruits? These ladies understand the concept of "team" unlike any other I've seen ... and their level of success speaks for itself. Bravo Geno!

All these kids want to be like the cam newtons of the world and whine when things aren't going their way. Body language, hustle, and playing with some energy should never slack. Act like you want to be there and quit going through the motions. Way to keep it real Geno!
