Hi my name is Rob Barber from Bodyboard holidays and I am going to talk to you about the easiest way to learn one of the cornerstone manoeuvres in bodyboarding, the three sixty.
I am going to teach you how to do it using your hand, so it’s called a hand drag three sixty or also known as an aided three sixty.
To do this you need a wave that is about 2-3 foot in size.
Not a shore break but a wave that is breaking way back from the land that’s going to give you a nice sloppy ride to the shore.
Take off on the peak and instead of going left or right, I’m going to suggest going straight down the wave.
As you go down the slope of the wave and end up in the flats you need to move your weight right forward to the front of the board, head up and back arched.
Hold on to the front 2 corners of your board and you want to do a number of things all at once.
The first thing is to cross your legs up behind your bum.
The second thing is you’re going to drop your left hand into the water.
You’re not going to reach right out but keep your hand next to the rail.
Drop it into the water half way from the nose to the tail keeping your fingers together.
This is going to create a nice pivot point for you to spin around.
Then all at the same time you are going to throw your head up and over your shoulder.
When you throw your head over your shoulder, keep looking over your shoulder all the way until you have done the three sixty and are facing forward again.
Real rookie errors with this manoeuvre are that people don’t hold the front 2 corners tight enough.
The other error is that people don’t move their weight far enough forward or cross your legs tight enough.
The tighter the legs are crossed, the tighter the spin will be.
The other thing is that half way through the spin when you are facing the white water you lose faith that you are going to make the move, drop your legs in the water and stop looking in the direction that you are going to spin around.
Keep on looking all the way through the spin and once you have tried it 5 or 6 times then you should nail it.
Once you have done the aided spin you will then progress with your bodyboarding and you can then work on doing the spin without dropping your hand in which is just a case of trying it once now that you have got that manoeuvre in your head.
Good luck with all your spinners and if you need any tips then drop us a line and don’t get dizzy.
