The religious aspect is backed because he sings 'Herr Gott' which means 'lord god' and is the catholic german way to adress god. Here it is unfortunately only translated as 'lord'.

@@merileopardisaksassa7030 oh, that's cool, thanks for sharing and correcting the error 👍🏽 So would it be "Der Herr Gott gibt"? (sorry that is probably very incorrect, I hope not offensively so). As a non-German and not knowing the language beyond a few words, I am always aware that I will lack knowledge of some of the more specific cultural references (be they audio, visual, etc), and miss some (most?) of the linguistic wordplay, the layered meanings behind certain words or phrases, or the nuance and intricacies of the particular words chosen. I think that the more time passes, the more I learn about the different meanings and interpretations of Rammstein's body of work, which is pretty cool really. Thanks! PS I had always thought that "Herr" meant "Mr" [Mister], so like "Herr Lindemann" would be "Mr. Lindemann", is this incorrect? Thank you

@@theinvisibleneonrainbowzeb2567 "Herr" does mean "Mister", but can also mean "Master". Calling god the "Herrgott" makes him sound bigger, thus Lindemann smaller in comparison, which is what the song plays with throughout.

The whip also relates to flagelation. The act of bloodletting with a whip to purge the sin.

Another interesting take on Till's early poetry. In the very early days of the band, he was married to the mother of his 1st daughter...and not particularly happy about the situation. He felt he made a mistake, wanted out...and held alot of guilt about it. The theme comes up in several early-written songs. But as always, there is word play and duality of meaning to everything he writes. Even if you were to ask him in person, he would prolly give you a vague answer...bc as always, part of his art is provoking thought!

Ah, finally someone who tries to make sense of the lyrics (even though this can be hard as quite a lot of translations appear to be imprecise, to say the least - this one was fine though) instead of just reacting to them like "Huh, weird" or "Oh, so provocative!".

As a female fan all I can say it's hard to focus on the lyrics during their live performance of this one. Something about Till whipping himself is just so satisfying and I'm sure he's well aware of this. :)

Great reaction as always. First time i saw them live was back in 2001! Have you seen the brand new single and video the band released yesterday, "Zick Zack"? The official version had subtitles/closed captions which were in German, but they had option for "auto-translate" subtitles into English. I thought that was cool, hadn't seen that option before, but yeah Zick Zack from Zeit. Recommend you give it a whirl, and also the "German with VlogDave" channel has an early initial reaction with some translations and interesting thoughts on the song which I think you'd enjoy.

Catholic religion managed to sadomasochistic connotation all by itself! The majority of european catholic monk sects practiced 'self-flagelation' for centuries, aka whipping the shit out of your back as a way to repent. Depending on your sect and type of sin different types of whips, for example with several tails or metal thorns,were used. This was often done in groups or in public to show devotion to god too. Fantastic analysis!
