Queen was the first band who could sell out stadiums. The crowd here at Wembley was only 72,000. Their South American tours sold out to over 250,000.

Queen's performance at Live Aid is voted MOST ICONIC festiwal moment of all time. You must keep in mind that this was not a Queen crowd, but still THEY STOLE THE SHOW. The crowd even didn't know they were coming because Queen were added to the list when all the tickets were sold out. Freddie commanded the crowd at 2 stadiums simultaneously (Wembley and Philadelphia) and had them in the palm of his hand. Check out more Queen Somebody to love Montreal 81, Stone cold crazy live at the Rainbow 74, Fat bottomed girls live at Bowl 82, White queen live at the Odeon 75 and Under pressure live at Wembley 86.

I was actually in that crowd, I was 16 years old, and it was the first time I had ever heard Queen live and have been a Queen fan ever since and I am now 52 years. There were 72,000 of us in the crowd and we didn't know whether Queen were going to attend as they weren't on the official line up or on the tickets. We all went crazy when they came on and to be honest it was all everybody was talking about afterwards. The rest of the acts seemed a bit boring after Queen had finished. I saw them live twice the following year, once at Wembley in July 1986 (Magic Tour) and their finale at Knebworth in August 1986 when Queen flew over us in helicopters to arrive at the venue. There were 150,000 of us in the crowd that night. The Knebworth concert was Freddie's ever last LIVE performance with Queen, the rest is history. RIP my hero Freddie Mercury, a true Legend in every sense of the word. Stay safe from Manchester UK x

Her Majesty, Elizabeth II, is a wonderful old girl, but for 20 minutes, Freddie and Queen ruled the world as he held that crowd in the palm of his hand. The band took this gig seriously and rehearsed for days. Their set was tight, upbeat, and nearly perfect.

There were around 72,000 people there. Queen weren't even on the original list of performers, so the crowd weren't expecting them to be there. This was NOT a Queen audience!! The band were nervous and concerned that their popularity was waning. Roger Taylor (the drummer) says he remembers looking up during "Radio GaGa" and seeing the crowd going nuts and thinking "Ah! This is going well." This was certainly not Queens largest audience.. They played the Rock in Rio concert to over 250,000 people and they didn't come on until 2a.m.!!! Queen fans are extremely loyal!! Also he made this performance against his doctors orders. He had a very severe throat infection and was told he should not perform. Well, he only went out and gave the best live performance EVER!!

Actually it's around 80,000 take it from someone who worked at the old Stadium and many others around the UK and other parts of the world, people don't take into consideration the corporate boxes which each held up to 50 and the restaurants which were all used for concerts

That day there were around 70 000 people at Wembley, 100 000 in Philadelphia and around 1,9 billion people watching it on TV in over 150 countries. Bob Geldorf once said that "Live Aid was the perfect stage for Freddie with the whole world as his audience." I had to work that day, but my VCR was stocked and I was home in time for Queen's set and it was so amazing.

I watched that show live and this generation loves our music for a reason. Freddie had thousands of people in the palm of his hand and made history that day. If you want to get to know Queen, you need vinyl and every scrap of video you can get. Seeing them live was life-changing. That day, Freddie had a sore throat because by then, he was experiencing complications of AIDS, not just HIV. He will never be eclipsed. Yes, Freddie Mercury is my spirit animal.

I remember watching this history making concert on TV that day. There were 60 bands between Wembley and Philadelphia. The largest charity driven event in history at that time. Queen stole the show and it’s still ranked as the #1 Live rock and roll show televised. Their Magic Tour one year later was a sell out throughout Europe. They had 2 nights at Wembley because the tickets sold out so fast. They tried for a third night but couldn’t get Wembley so they had an additional concert in Knebworth which sold 150,000 tickets. Wembley s max was 72,000. The 1986 Wembley concert was just Queen and absolutely fabulous. Please add the following to your reaction list: Under Pressure live at Wembley 1986 Play the Game live in Montreal 1981 It’s a Kind of Magic live at Wembley 1986 Save Me live in Montreal 1981 Love of My Life live at Wembley 1986. There were 72,000 at Wembley that day for Live Aid and 90,000 in Philadelphia. It was televised around the world with a 1.9 Billion people watching. All of their past albums sold like hot cakes after this history making performance. There will never be another front man like Freddie.

Just for clarity as I see parts of the story being related ….72,000 people at Wembley in UK PLUS 90,000 people at Philadelphia in USA linked by live satellite which was broadcast worldwide to an estimated audience of 1.9 billion people. Not a Queen event… multiple artists who gave their time for free during that day in both venues and synchronised between the 2 . The biggest crowd at a live concert ? I can tell you that Queen played to an estimated 250,000 to 350,000 people in Rio (actuals are hard to come by as normally ticket sales gives you the answer +/- 10% BUT in Rio there was little enforcement of any limited number) .

It's not a Queen concert it's part of something that took place on 13th July 1985 Wembley Stadium held 80,000 but this was being played via satellite for around one billion and in the States they had another concert going on, this is also how Freddie sounds with a throat infection, he was told not too do it by the doctors, but he went ahead anyway and they were very last minute on the bill for the concert

Awesome reaction! The Rio performance that you watched had more people there was around 350k people. However, this is the biggest concert of all times, it was watched by 40% of the world's population at the time on TV, it was watched by 1.9 billion people. This was not a Queen crowd, that is what makes the performance even belter. Around 70 artist took part on that day, but most people only remember Queen at Live Aid. Queen themselves filled Wembley stadium for two nights a year later in 1986.

Hi new to you….so I believe Freddie was very aware of the number of people involved in seeing this concert and therefore, Queen’s part of it. And they were THE band to handle an audience of this size, not only in person but with impact all over the world. They rehearsed , that amazing video is available on YT, when so many other bands did not, and it absolutely showed. It was cringe worthy at times and these were big name people and bands. But Each band had around 20 mins and Queen rehearsed their songs for maximum impact and popularity, partial bits and pieces, some the tempo faster, but pieced together with perfect flow, it appears so easy but they had this timed to perfection. For the number of the people not only there but at another stadium in Philadelphia watching (which is why Freddie didn’t forget the camera) and the rest of us all over the world watching at home. I am from Oklahoma and I watched this live on one of the 3 stations we actually had at that time? 😂 I just graduated from High School, heading to college, this summer. I loved Queen from the start, not necessarily a popular thing in Oklahoma at that time. 😂 The fact that they even broadcast to Oklahoma shows the power of this event. Here is Google….The majority of these artists performed at either Wembley Stadium in London, where a crowd of 70,000 turned out, or at Philadelphia's JFK Stadium, where 100,000 watched. Thirteen satellites beamed a live television broadcast of the event to more than one billion viewers in 110 countries. This was a BIG deal in 1985, trust me. And Queen stole the show. 💯 ❤️

Did you notice the comments, how many people said that Freddie is the love of my love, or my forever love? I never read anything that was said about other singers, actors, etc., etc. there is no way back, when he sang he didn't sing towards the audience but he ,hugged and pulled everyone to him you was his ,he was yours, it is like he melted into you and you melted into him and that is cannot be separated,I am in love with him cuse there is that connection you can not separate, and I never have been felt that with another person

Sorry, just found you; so, I’m late to the Comment Section! I’m a 66 y/o Glamma. You seem to enjoy the background of things. And, I’m a Trivia sponge, so here goes: They had just completed a Tour a month b4. So, they went & rented a Stadium to practice the performance. He ended up with a Throat Infection & the Doctor highly recommended he not do it bc he might lose his musical ability. He said no! Can you tell he had a severe throat infection? Most people think he was drinking booze from the cups bc on the piano. He’s drinking Honey & Tea. His command of the Audience was more than coincidence it was miraculous. Considering there were so many people there the sound was getting absorbed through them. So the people @ the back we’re following his hand gestures bc the actual sound hadn’t even reached them b4 the next sound was coming @ them. Go back & watch what his hands are doing & what the Audience is doing. NEXT: Radio Gaga is celebrating Radio bc M-TV is just getting started. LADY GAGA was a huge Freddie Fam growing up, so That was where she came up with HER STAGE NAME! You have to listen to the words to really understand the meaning. Most of us didn’t have a clue what a Band looked like unless we saw them in Person! NEXT-MICROPHONE. At sometime along the way a Microphone Stand broke, so that was the only spilt second solution they could come up with. He realized the freedom he had to move, dance, & engage the Audience. NEXT MICHAEL JACKSON & ELVIS CONNECTION on Song THING CALLED LOVE: It was written as his homage to Elvis-Freddie was a big fan. But, he just wasn’t sure about the song bc he didn’t want to taint Elvis. SO, he played it for Michael J. (Yes, they were friends!). And Michael told him he HAD TO, he said “Freddie, you have to”! (Can’t you just see that!?). NEXT FREDDIE’s VOICE. HE HAD 4 extra teeth so that’s the reason he had such an overbite. He had the ability to naturally flow from Octave to Octave. It was a natural progression, for him. SCIENTIFICALLY: Test were done on his Voice. He was able to use his Throat muscles on either side of his vocal cords. Which is normally seen in some Opera Singers. His Vocal Range was from Low Bass F, to High Soprano F! They were extremely surprised to find out that he could go from about 92Hz to 784Hz, effortlessly! See ACTUAL REPORT BELOW: nyone who has listened to a Queen track knows that Freddie has a unique ability that still has not been truly replicated since. His ability to blend highs, lows and mid range notes cohesively and with immense precision. This skill was due to the fact that Freddie was able to create faster vibrato and harmonics than any other singer at the time. Not only this, he was able to shift through registers effortlessly. Although he naturally held a baritone voice, he primarily sang as a tenor and of course had no problem then shifting into soprano parts. One study on Freddie’s vocal range even confirmed that he was able to vary from about 92.2 Hz to 784 Hz, meaning he was reliably able to hit notes from the booming low of F#2 to the high pitch G5 - that covers a full three octaves! LAST FUN FACT: His Lead Guitarist is playing on a Guitar he & his Father made. When he first starting to learn they were too poor to afford a high end guitar. So, they just made one! The included some “extras” that would normally have to be separate instruments to get all those features (think Concerts when you see guitarist changing Guitars depending on the Song….that’s why he didn’t)! I’m sorry to take up your Valuable Time, and I thank you. You need anymore Trivia I’m your G’Ma go to. My Brain is full, especially with music, & believe it or not Sports! (When he is waving his arm it is to tell the cameramen which way he is going bc he’s moving around so much. And, “We Will Rock You”, is actually a Prelude to “We Are The Champions”. It is actually all 1 Song!) LEAD GUITARIST: Brian May’s family couldn’t afford a Guitar so he & his Dad made it from an old Cabinet. Because they were making it there are a lot of extra features that he wanted. It is truly a “one of a kind”!
