As a soldier who was awarded a “certificate of PT excellence” and as a qualified grader of the army ACFT; The current test is easy to pass but very difficult to max out. Best I have done on an ACFT (army combat fitness test) is 591/600 and I am built similar to Will. The only thing I’ve seen someone actually fail is the run and/or the height/weight taping (which you are exempt from if you score a 540 and above with at least 60 points in each category). Prior to the plank being the “core exercise,” they had a leg tuck event where you would hang from a bar with a staggered grip and touch your knees to your elbows. A lot of soldiers (especially females) were unable to do even one repetition (the minimum to pass) or did not have the grip strength to hold on to the bar. As a result, around half the females in the entire army were flagged as “non-promoteable” because they could not pass PT. That is why they changed the standard to the plank. I preferred this leg tuck exercise over the plank because the max score was 20, and you could relax after your 20 reps before the run. The plank adds an endurance exercise right before the run. In my opinion, that leg tuck was one of the most practical things on the ACFT because it simulates your ability to recover if you were dangling from a rope. The whole ACFT was designed to “simulate combat” which is why there is a deadlift as well as a sled drag (like a casualty on a litter or quickly dragging them off the battlefield). The 40 lb kettlebell carries are the weight of the full .50 cal ammo cans, 5 gallon jerry/nato cans, or cratering/shape charges. The hand release pushups are to simulate ducking for cover and retracting your hands (in real life it would be to the back of your neck) when artillery is coming down. The ball throw I think is kinda dumb, ngl… the plank? The plank is really dumb and does not simulate any part of combat that I could think of. So that’s the ACFT (Army combat fitness test) which is the test they did in the video and is the current pt test of the army. The APFT (army physical fitness test) was the test before either variation of the ACFT, and it consisted of 2 minutes of pushups (normal 90 degree pushups and lockout at the top), 2 minutes of situps and a 2 mile run. The minimum score for male pushups was 42 pushups (only 19 for female) and it was something like 76(?) (male) to max. The situps were 78 to max for both male and female. The slowest allowable time on the 2 mile was something like a 15:54 (?) compared to the 22:00 they get now. Max score was the same 13:30 that it is now. The APFT (the old test) was significantly more difficult to pass, but much easier to max out. The old test was really easy for skinny lean runners, not big strong soldiers. The ranger variation of the APFT is a pass/fail 5 mile run with a time cutoff of 40 minutes. I believe the rangers still use that version of the test. Conspiracy time: There is a conspiracy theory that the whole reason that they changed the PT test at all was because SMA Grinston wanted the army to provide better gym equipment to the gyms that soldiers had. The funding was denied. By changing the test, they could use the budget from “readiness and sustainment” instead of requesting the funding for random gym equipment in order to buy a bunch of weights and gym equipment. Now the army is considering going BACK to the old APFT test (which had been around since like the 1970’s), however every unit in the Army now has at least a baseline of gym equipment and weights. Grinston was a good guy. I wouldnt be surprised if he admits that conspiracy is actually true one day.
@gumbo9092 ай бұрын
I was looking at their sprint drag and plank, it’s 5 50m so why did they only drag towards one end then go back and forth for laterals and sprint? I feel like I missed something. Also they disqualified for plank since they locked their fingers. I actually disqualified my first ACFT cuz of that and ended up getting 98 points
@NboOfficialAus2 ай бұрын
Women should be held to the exact same standards if not higher standards then men. Who cares if you lose a bunch of candidates. It's already a problem for internal conflict rape is a massive issue by their own or if captured men often take more risks around women they stand out. They need to not only be fit enough to do everything men can but need to be stand out women to mitigate all the problems having women in the military cause. I was reading about how they're almost never put on the front line and when they are they are mainly scouting and operating I can't imagine why..
@brannondoolin86542 ай бұрын
The "official" reason for them getting rid of the leg tuck was because more people, men included, were using their lower back and spine to bend upward rather then utilizing the core to actually commence the movement. While the plank is great for core and overall body endurance, I think they should just have sit ups or something instead to target the core and then not interfere with the 2 mile. My highest score was 574 but my current is 554 :(
@gumbo9092 ай бұрын
@@brannondoolin8654 that “official” response is utter BS, because in order for you to actually use your core properly in that movement, you NEED to bend your hips/lower back. When you’re doing hanging leg raises or knee raises, ppl just bring them up and stay completely still. You’re suppose to bend your hips in a way so that your ass is points towards the front or upwards to actually utilize your core

That's crazy, I'm about to ship out to basic and I was waiting for a video of you doing the ACFT! I will say, I wish there was a member of the Army proctoring the test bc a few things were off and wouldn't have counted (ex: for the pushups, you can't have more than a 1-boot's-width of distance between your feet bc wider feet is easier, the deadlift handles are supposed to be flipped the other way thus making it easier, the sprint-drag-carry had a few things off about it, same with the plank bc you can't clasp your hands, etc.), but it was still fun to watch y'all take the test!

5:27 As one who is in the army, none of those pushups would've counted. You'd have to create an L with your thumb and pointer finger and have your hands come into pecs. Also, you have to keep a continual motion with your arms only resting in the prone position or as we call it "the front leaning rest". And your feet have to be one foot length apart at most; by foot, i mean a literal persons foot size. If a persons foot is 5 inches, that's as far as you can widen your legs

I'm not entirely sure Will isn't on something. Suddenly his legs are 10x the size they were last year.

@@TenTonNuke his physique isn't really that absurd and hes also not insanely strong. He's mostly just well rounded and large.

funny, the US Army is what got me started on the fitness path... but back then we only had 3 things on the physical fitness test: push-ups, sit-ups, and 2 mile run. this was back in the mid 2010's though. and yes, I'm a veteran. for me the hardest part was the run because anything that involves muscle is easy for me, where the endurance of running was my weak point (for others, they were the opposite)

Thanks for your service and same here. I can't run a single lap before my calfs are completely done. I have to take walk breaks in between.
