There is usually a trial for a homicide. Why would you think there could not be a trial? The only way there cannot be a trial is by a plea agreement. That takes some time to negotiate.

That only becomes an option if they think they may have difficulty convincing a jury, and they want to ensure their conviction. That's how criminal court works. They have to be sure whatever defense (excuse) she uses of why she killed him, wont sway any of the jurors on her side.
