Sir...I am a professional farrier (in layman's terms, a horseshoer ;) ), and before I began to do business, I went to a great, honest, VERY comprehensive school right here in my state. Before that, I was a full time police officer with 20+ years of service. I retired to move to the farm, and to take care of a mentally challenged son. Given my interest in horses, and my great physical conditioning, I knew farriery was the thing for me. I am, however, a person who demands the very best out of myself, so I went to a school that taught me the things I needed to know in order to become a pro! I'm now nearing 60 years of age, am in great shape, but farriery is becoming too demanding on my body...especially my hips. I've ALWAYS been "the guy" my friends have come too for a massage (Yup. The whole thing. Not just a neck rub. :) ); because, they tell me I'm really good at it. I used to date a massage therapist, and we "traded off" massages almost daily. I learned a lot from her, and I know this is something my body is capable of doing for another 10 or 15 years. Here is my problem and my question for you sir: I WILL NOT go into business as a "massage therapist", "muscle therapist", or "masseur", until I get appropriate training, even though my state requires no training or licensing! All of the "schools" I've found in the State of Oklahoma have been scams...ALL OF THEM! They would dispute that, but I KNOW they're allowing untrained, unqualified students to work on clients, and the schools are getting paid a full fee for services. The students are charged exorbitant prices for low quality training. Due to my responsibilities as a police trainer, and the fact that I also run a small farm and hay baling operation, I can't leave the state. Any ideas where I can go to get trained sir? Thank you in advance for your attention!

+Steve Burton Hi Steve, I am sorry to hear that...Its a shame. I have studied in the US (new york) and the training was OK. I don't know what to say but here in the United Kingdom the situation is pretty much the same. A lot of massage school are....not very good. And sometimes students who have done a course somewhere else do the same course second time round with us. So, its not very unusual I am sorry to report. My suggestion? First, if it meant to be massage for you, find the best that you can. And then keep learning with other courses. Maybe take some short courses for physiotherapist after graduation. Its hard for all of us to find good training. BUT, keep your 'internal compass' and you will find great therapists to learn from..I am sorry I can not help further but hope this put you in the right place...

+Bodyology Massage School Ahhh! I had no idea where you guys were from. Thank you for the advice. Obviously, in this litigious society, I fear going into business without the very best training! I may give in, and let word of mouth lead me where ever this can carry me. My greatest fear is that I may inadvertently do harm. Thank you!

Steve, I am a massage therapist and also a horse person so I understand the physical demands of a blacksmith. I just wanted to tell you that most of your real education will come from the CE classes required to remain licensed. Your basic training is to get licensed and most are not that thorough. Just go with it to get licensed and then take a variety of modalities over time that you are interested in. I recommend myofascial and neuromuscular. That will take you a long way.
