The APU light actually indicates an open circuit, not closed.

Forgot to test the APU fire alarm before start. Check your 727 manual.

... and when you say "turn the apu generator switch to off position", it is actually closing the circuit, turning the generator on.

Then you say let the APU run for 3 minutes with no load, but you've already turned the generator on, and you've said that you only have to wait for 1 minute before opening bleed ducts?
