That approach (in very murky conditions) and landing was BRILLIANT. Hardly a shudder when the main gear touched down. A real pro job. Thanks for the post

Instrument guidance system. Its almost like the ILS but it "guides" you to the checkerboard on the hill as you can see on the left side in 1:00. When you reach the checkerboard then you fly visually and make a right 47 degree turn to line up with the runway for landing. Hope this helps =)
@tb8853616 жыл бұрын
that guy did a nice job. that airport is not in use for airliners anymore but it was a hard turn in to a runway going inbetween two biuldings. very difficult
@goodshipkaraboudjan16 жыл бұрын
Check out the PAPI's which are the lights on the edge, 2 green and 2 red indicate spot on glidescope (as opposed to vector which is your direction ie track). 3 greens and 1 red would be too high, all greens way to high etc you get the point.
@ARKINHK15 жыл бұрын
It was built in 1925, so, yup it was small. The runway was extended, but, it was deemed to expensive to again and again - not enough resources around that area of Kowloon. Hence, the move to Lantau.

@omar272615 жыл бұрын
It just looks slow because the visual reference point is the ground, which is quite far so it looks like its moving so slow from the inside. The landing speed of 747 is more or less 140knots.

And their planes are much smaller and more agile. But yeah landing on a tiny moving runway must be super intense, at least they get landing hooks so if they get it wrong they can circle arround again.

The old HK airport was in the middle of the city, as you can see in this video. That last-minute turn to starboard in the final approach was famous around the world. Unfortunately, the new HK airport is in the middle of the harbor and there is nothing interesting about landing in HK anymore.

A bunch of people: it was originally a tiny flying school, then the RAF took over until the Japanese invaded Hong Kong in 1941. Shortly afterwards the Japanese built an additional runway. Then in 1957 the British government replaced the old runways with new ones, and gradually the residential area grew around the expanding airport.
