I love the A340 and enjoy flying on them, but there's no competition. The 777 is a marvel of engineering and ushered in the era of ultra-longhaul, twin-engine flights. Basically, it killed the quads. Planes just don't get any better than the 777.

Andrew Anane Lol, sorry, but no it's not. As of 2016, The 787 has 1100+ orders. The A350 has 800. The 777 is basically in a category of its own. Currently, airlines are placing massive orders for both 777-3 and 777X, which will hold as many people as the 747. Your an Airbus fan, but that doesn't correlate with actual numbers.

Of course 787 will have more orders cause it came much earlier than A350 did and also 787 is in 3 different models whiles a350 has just 2 but that number is gonna change very soon. It's also amazing taking off. The nose wheel becomes airborne early then at rotation you just see this powerful change to vertical, in one quick motion. The effect isn't just on 777s with a light load, but in sold out , very long distance flights also.

The A340 was designed as a 747 alternative. Only four engined planes were able to travel ultra long haul routes back then, the aviation rules at the time were restrictive in this respect for two engined planes. So if you compare the 747-400 against the A340-500/600 the Airbus wins hands down. The technology on the 340 was ground breaking and outclassed everything ever built to fly previously. Pilots say even today that the A340-500 was such a massive step up in technology that it was more akin to flying a fighter jet than an airliner. Also, the 777 needs to claim from two engines almost as much power as the A340 gets from its four and so they have much shorter 'on-wing' time as a result. Higher thrust engines are far, far more expensive to maintain. Over their lifetime costs compare in the A340's favour. Its a fact. Rolls Royce have said so themselves. For comfort, style, room, facilities etc again the A340 is in a class of its own, hands down winner.

I disagree. While I like both Airbus and Boeing, the 777 is arguably the most reliable and universally loved widebody ever built. It revolutionized the industry and put the A340 out of business. While Airbus was busy building an outdated 4 engine design, the 777 was the first twin engine to fly ultra-long hauls and opened new routes that were previously impossible. There's a reason the 777 is far more successful than the A340. Numbers don't lie. Also, the A340 is seriously underpowered while the engines on the 777 are a marvel of engineering. I myself love the A340, but there's just no competition. I feel like you might be an Airbus fanboy that will always favor Airbus regardless of facts.

+Justin Hopkins i just prefere the A340 to the 777....the A340 is a much bigger plane, A340-600 was the longest in the world for many yrs. Airbus planes have allways held the longest routes title, the A340 did for many yrs and recently the A380 flew 18 hours to launch a new route for Emirates. I love the A340's shear presence, it's long and proud, and that third set of gear is just awesome. 4 engined single decker, absolutely awesome. On the other hand, the 777 is so graceful, its wings flap like the wings of a great bird, its 6 wheel rear gear sets are very iconic, and those... those engines... gorgeous. Both are great planes and deserve mad respect.

Jack Frost A lot of people knock Boeing for it's safety but that's because they have been building planes a lot longer, and their safety record tracks back to the 1950's where things just weren't as safe back then, not to mention the 1970's terrorist hijacking era. Went on Emirates' 777. 10 abreast seating for 8 hrs, not good. Flew Virgin Atlantic A340 back with 8 abreast seating and so much better. From passenger/comfort angle Airbus much better.

That is because Emirates 10 seats abreast instead of 9, 777 are usually 9 abreast. If 9 abreast was installed in the A340, it would be much tighter, and I don't think you would like that. The 777 is a wider plane than a A340.

Yes. The A340 is notoriously underpowered.

The GE90 engine on the 777 are extremely large diameter, thus making the A340´s CFM56 engines look small.

I love the 777 so much, its iconic long forehead is alway fascinating to me were the moulding of the 767 is genetically in the centre of the nose, but widened to fit that 343 seat configuration inn. Simply Amazing Engineering.

I have flown on with both, but i think Boeing 777 is the best one. Also the Boeing 747 "Jumbo" is truly magnificent and confortable.

I live under a flight path and I notice whenever a 777-300 goes over you can hear the wake vortex and the wind getting wipped up. It doesn't happen on 777-200 and I have not heard it on any other type of aircraft? It is always 777-300 with the raked wing tips. Has body else found this?

That Triple 7 at reverse thrust blowing a snow blizzard is the wildest shot I have ever seen! Airbus A340 turbofan engine sounds really weird. I know it is Ok because it gets all that weight in the air. My vote goes to the Triple 7. Looks, sounds, landing, much better in my opinion.

Excellent video. I always wonder about plane design, why the 757, 777 are powered so well but the 340 is not. Same for one model of 737 maybe the 800 or 900 that takes so long to take off. Don't these negative issues come up in the design phase so they know ahead of time? Or are planes designed for a certain characteristic such as fast take offs and maybe others slower take offs but more fuel efficient?

I love the 340, especially -600. I like the 777, especially -200LR I already flew on the 340, not yet on 777. 2 engines are better than 4, but I stll prefer the 340
