One of my friends is a FedEx pilot. He liked flying the DC10 much better than the MD11. He said the MD11 was much more touchy, and because of bad fuel economy, the manufacturer had pushed the center of gravity farther to the back to correct the problem, and that made the landings much more difficult and dangerous. To me, the rear engine of the DC10 and MD11 always seemed like an afterthought, as if they decided they needed a third engine and slapped it on the back. The L-1011 always looked better thought out and far more beautiful and graceful. And the S-duct, though more expensive to build, had much better aerodynamic features. I knew a few pilots who flew them, and they couldn't say enough good things about that plane. Some of my flight attendant friends also used to love to work on them. I think the lower galley gave them a space to get away from passengers and relax for a bit.

There is just something special about trijets. I guess its because the tail-engine make them look more identical to rockets. They have a "powerful" look to them that even the 747 and A380 are lacking.

Marc Liljeqvist Excellent observation, I've been wondering if a future engine development could potentially allow for a super jumbo to go back to a 3-holer getting the same thrust but saving fuel over the 4 engine types of today. Of course the demand has to change Boeing nor AirBus can't squeeze more 747-8 or 8F , A380 orders out of anybody. Who knows if slot limits get worse and airlines have no choice. Heathrow is going to be in the fight of its life getting a third runway, Gatwick is not in any better shape. I can see a time when only super jumbos will be making the long distance flights if Heathrow is stuck with their two runways. LAX may have to go with tighter slots while trying to make a up to date Airport out of the mess of today. Parts of Terminal 8 are poor for the third world. The cool factor is way up there as far as three holders with me. I just don't want to see another set of D.C.-10 disasters with a rushed to deliver bad aircraft took lots of lives in Chicago, Paris and Sioux City

The TrisStar is a beauty isn't she? For me it will always be the DC-10 as it was the last plane I flew on after I got back from Vietnam with a penetrating traumatic brain injury. The Army sent me out of Walter Reed to active duty at Fort Hood Texas where for over 8 months I had no medical help at all. I got out on May 11, 1972 and was at Love Field.I looked out the window and there she was,a brand new American Airlines DC-10. I asked the lady at the counter"Is there any room on this plane for me?" She said something,"Of course, it's a DC-10,I'm sure there will a seat for you." I paid for the ticket at the gate and headed to Chicago and home straight across the lake. Looking back I now realize I was only a little smarter than Forrest Gump at that point in my life.

I just hope when the DC-10 from Fedex Flight 705 gets retired, she's put into a museum for preservation, so people know how heroic of a plane that particular DC10 was. That plane went through more punishment than any other jet liner I've ever seen, and it's still flying today. It was flown upside down, into a steep dive on wide open throttles, into steep banks, did the maneuvers of a fighter jet, and landed on a full tank of fuel safely. No other jet-liner has ever successfully survived that, which goes to show how well built the DC10 really was, ESPECIALLY the DC10 from Fedex Flight 705. That plane is a Legend. One of my best Red Eye Flight experiences, was on a Beautiful Northwest Airlines DC10, bound from Honolulu to San Francisco, but it was an international plane that flew in from Japan. Meaning, that particular DC10 was a beautiful 3 class plane that featured a beautiful giant plasma T.V., FLAT BED SEATS, personal entertainment, the most delicious gourmet food, and top service in first class. That was one of 2 red-eye flights I actually managed to get a good night sleep on (The other good red eye experience being on a British Airways Boeing-747 from Johannesburg, South Africa to London, England). The DC10 was an underrated, luxurious, extremely tough, and beautiful plane, and it's sad that it's no longer in passenger service.

The technology was incredible and far more reliable than the DC-10. Had Rolls Royce not had their issues with getting the L-1011 their engines on time one might still seeing them building civilian aircraft today. The DC-10 variants were riddled with serious issues from the begining. Back then only the serious, deadly problems made the headlines. Douglas, decided to make deals with the carriers, making them cheaper to get them out the door. This practice still goes on today, sadly. Guess who's minding your safety folks? Nobody..I couldn't get off of the DC-10 quick enough and fly the 747. Now that was a reliable work horse! We called the 747's reliable Fords and the L-1011 luxurious Cadillacs.

I get that it would never happen since nobody is buying A380's and haven't ordered one for 2+ years, the 747-800 is not selling many PA versions but orders do trickle in and the Freighter version is a success . The dream is this using the newest GE-90X build a Three engine 500 passenger aircraft with that same pencil sharpened nose, the nose wheel set back a bit, made of composites. Tim Clark is the only CEO buying or flying the A380 in a large quantity, his airline owns more than half of those produced, meaning my Super-Jumbo L-1050 would kill Lockheed

Not one of them ever crashed due to aircraft failure. You can't say that about either the 10 or the 11. And the 1011 was sooooo fast! I enjoyed it immensely. They handled very well when you were 'low and slow' due to a special system that gave you the same 'feel' whether you were low and slow or at cruise. Once while lined up on Runway 24 at Miami, an Arrow DC-8 was in position for takeoff ahead of us, but he was having some trouble getting moving, despite being cleared for takeoff a couple of times by the tower. Finally, the tower told us to execute a missed approach, and I asked if 9 Left was available. Tower replied that he could give me approval for a short final on 9 Left, so I asked for some power, cranked her to the right and then a hard left to line up with 9 Left. I remember hearing the 'Bank Angle' warning briefly in the second turn. Leveling out, I was right on the money with the ILS and felt pretty good. I continued the approach and flare to a pretty decent landing as I remember (It was hard NOT to make a good landing on the 1011 as she would just mush herself down through ground effect and squat on the mains). As I was making the turn off the active onto a high speed, I heard the tower say 'If I hadn't seen it, I wouldn't have believed it' as he told us to contact ground control. Great memories.

No misery is on final into San Diego flying an AreoCommander and being told to vacate your position because A very large AA DC-10 is on your ass. It was indeed a thrill especially when you must turn left climbing to 3000 as the DC-10 passes to your right, perfectly positioning your fairly large 2 hole-er (for general aircraft that is) catching the jet blast from #1 and #2. Try and imagine that nerve racking final under perfect conditions as you drop down rapidly once you have cleared Balboa Park, and then a few seconds after being in a spin dryer some call wake turbulence. Never has a 10 looked so very huge.

@wizardmix9 жыл бұрын
+MrCzechers American 191 was a maintenance failure to follow proper procedure. UA 232 was bad titanium and definitely a design flaw that all hydraulics were positioned so close together at a vulnerable spot. Early 10's also had a nasty habit of explosive decompression in the rear cargo door.
@MrCzechers9 жыл бұрын
You're right. I forgot all about the cargo door problems.
@bobbypaluga43469 жыл бұрын
+Evan J American turned a maintenance failure into an abuse of equipment by using a forklift to detach the engine for replacement and then remounting with a forklift to save time. The angle of the forklift vs the angle of the bolt attachment were not close, so extreme stress was placed on the bolts and mounting plate, causing cracks which then lead to the #1 breaking free and flying over the top of the left wing. The folks in Tulsa were guilty of criminal negligence/incompetence IMO just to save some time and rush the aircraft back on-line.
@wizardmix9 жыл бұрын
Bobby Paluga Yup, I'm familiar with that but thanks for elaborating. It's good for this information to be out there. It's amazing what negligence brings down aircraft, sometimes it's as simple as 2 rivets or a piece of tape. People with no business being around an aircraft trying to save time and thus killing hundreds of people. I'm really thankful for the NTSB and the corrections we've made as a result of this over the decades.

I flew for TWA 1976/2000 and the L1011 was a key component of our fleet. Still today that aircraft remains my favorite from my years in service together with the B747SP. I was FAA certified throughout my career on B707, CV880, B727, DC9, B747, B747SP, L1011, B757, B767, MD80/90, B717.

Good references to these wide-body jets. DC-10s were "cattle-cars" to me, usually > 1/2 or 3/4 full with many legacy airlines, including legacy carrier, Northwest Airlines, as the last airline to have them and fly them, pre-Delta merger.

DC10 is the winner for me. Its toughness and long commercial and military career prove it, and still there are many of them in the demanding cargo revenue service, plus the military KC and KDC10s. The Tristar was a great airplane, but the failure to develop a heavier version with the same fuselage length, plus its higher maintenance costs made it lose the commercial race vs. the Ten. MD11? Awesome machine, but it ended up being a loser against the big twins. If only the myopic Board of Directors of McDonnell Douglas had understood that they needed to give it a new wing, it could have been a total winner. But they went cheap, simply improved the DC10 wing and ended up with a '60s wing to compete against the new design wings in the 777 and the A330/340 family. And anyway the trijet era died the day the big twins proved their reliability for ETOPS.

sobelou **McDonnell Douglas had the MD12 in design, as well as an MD11XX, yet the company was so cash strapped, it couldn't afford to build the better, more competitive jet designs. According to research, a company based in Taiwan was going to fund the uplevel design for McDonnell Douglas, but at the last minute pulled out of the deal.[Ultimately causing McDonnell Douglas to be sold to Boeing. Fortunately from post 1996, the MD11 has some of Boeing Corporation's most ingenious aircraft knowledge].**

Beautiful Videos for comparisons. Always preferred the Lockheed L-1011 myself, it always felt like a superior aircraft, and evoked a sense of reliability and safety. It was a sad day when the R.A.F stopped flying them, but hey!! progress must prevail. But it is comforting to know that "Times May Change But Standards Absolutely Must Remain Intact".

There's a reason the USAF uses the KC-10 as their mid-air refuelling aircraft: it's so damn dependable! Douglas made planes to last, and despite it's safety record and nickname "Death Cruiser-10", it's a workhorse through and through. The Tristar didn't get far within the airlines, Eastern, Air Canada, and a host of others used it---and the MD-11 is a longer stretch in a classic but not the same effect. *LONG LIVE THE TRI-JETS*!!!

That is not entirely correct the Turkish crash was a result of a design error. That said the DC aircraft were generally designed to higher standards than Boeing both from a pure mechanical sense and airframe sense.

My favorite DC-10. I have never noticed this before but at about 2:38 to about 2:40 you can actually see through the right fuselage just above the elevator and see out the left side... is that normal?
@MarcMathot9 жыл бұрын
This is normal as this part of the fuselage isn't pressurised. This is where all the trim system is managing the fixed horizontal surface. It seems that modern aircraft have a panel that is hiding those opening. I saw that older B737 have the same opening.

It is normal. At World we would run the stab trim to full up to allow airflow through that part to help keep the APU from getting too hot. That is if we were in a location that was very hot such as Kuwait.

As an aircraft mechanic (maintenance engineer) I have worked on DC10-10 in ORBIS (N220AU). It was so cool plane, though the maintenance of hydraulic system #2 and Engine #2 was more difficult. But the three air conditioning systems were accessible like on a desk. I loved that plane, the roaring of the three CF6-50 during take off otr engine ground run! As far as I know, the stretched body of MD11 lead to reduced surface of its horizontal stabilizer, that required pilots special training for landing. On Cathay Pacific L1011 I have been as a passenger in the 1990-es and I think it had the widest cabin at that time.

The DC-10/MD-11 is the only one that opted for a straight-through engine configuration. All the others opted for S-ducts.
