Pilot comfort is a big deal to us. We have completely revamped the 777X pilot seat for additional comfort and the flight deck includes large touchscreen LCD displays, a first in commercial aviation. Oliver Simpson Well, just about every Boeing cockpit looks the same as each other, there’s not much of a difference between the 737 and 777 cockpit, the 737 cockpit is a little smaller and little more squished looking. The 787 cockpit has the same cockpit as the 777. The 777 cockpit looks the same as the 747 cockpit, the 777 is just wider than the 747. Same goes with Airbus.

The dreamliner is the base for almost all their new planes. But yes. They took the displays and the layout from the 787 and put them on the MAX.

Looks like a copy of the 787. Wish they had at least kept the brown/goldish color, like on the old 777, 747, 757 and 767.

I'm very glad that GE would use its newly-revealed oxide-oxide CMC material to move the noise-reduction system inside the GE9x, but it's still a bit sad to see the chevrons disappear. That design has been a signature.

I love the new displays much like the Dreamliner but I imagine the flight deck in traditional brown instead of grey. Only an opinion - might look amazing in brown with these new displays to add warmth.

I also feel like the 777 flight deck as we know it - is known for being both comfortable and commanding, however by switching to grey - It seems to lose both of these qualities. Its not just another executive jet, it's the boss of the sky, It's a 777 - It must be brown.

The only thing I hated about the 777 and 747 was the brown interior. So glad they got rid of it! The new models have the most beautiful and modern looking flight decks ever!

Memer_Rick oled isn’t really needed. The advantages isn’t really that beneficial in this use case considering that oled will be more expensive.

As a pilot I do not want touch screens. Imagine trying to aim in heavy turbulence. Never gonna happen

The mode control panel and other flight controls are sill all analogue controls even on the 777X. still buttons and switches just the secondary systems that are touchscreen. It's not actually that hard to use a touchscreen in motion especially when you're moving with the object.

well I can not agree in turbulent area is quite hard to change chart or calculate landing distance on iPad based EFB

If I remember correctly, the touchscreens will be made such that you always need to stabilize one finger somewhere and use another finger to interact with the screen. In this way, you can withstand turbulence and still operate virtual buttons - just like one would analog buttons.

Yes, at some point real world wingspan beats out winglets for increasing some efficiencies, but that wingtip folding mechanism weighs a lot.

Yes, I think after all the angst about the A380 wingspan that caused airports to have to reconfigure gates, taxiways, etcetera Boeing wisely decided to avoid a repeat of that.

777 is already fly by wire, 737 MAX isn’t. they’re doing whatever airbus is already doing by making different aircraft types handle similarly to one another.

I would have thought you'd have known better than this as you're a 777 pilot and are knowledgeable. You should know the 737 MAX is a different story compared to the 777 and 777x, as both are FBW with the 777X simply mimicking the FBW systems of the 777 and 787. They also don't have engine size issues to deal with like the 737 MAX had to.

Indeed sad. Boeing has been marketing much more successfully in smaller, direct flights rather than the traditional large-hub jumbos, luckily the 747-8 was designed with much of this in mind and thus had separate passenger and cargo versions. While the 8i is not really well-sold, still a) it's not loosing entirely to A380s, and b) it's much welcomed in cargo industries. Hopefully the 747s can always have its place.

Cargo guys and gals have been making as much noise as possible about getting airlines to buy the 747-8Fs. You may not absolutely need the nose loading capability often, but when you do need it, you really need it. Depending on commercial Antonov converted military planes is not the best option in many ways. You want to control your own destiny.

Gibus The passenger 747-400 is coming to end but British Airways will be the last customer of it (they will be phased out by 2024). The remaining 747-400's will be freighters. The 747-8 won't be retired for some time despite production ending in 2021 after all 47 -8I's and the 88 -8F have been delivered (plus Air Force One)

There's a little touchpad next to the throttle quadrant & under the CDU. It's more of a laptop-style mouse than a traditional desktop mouse.

To be honest, with how many redundancies and the general think about thinking about everything that could happen, I would doubt the engineers and designers behind this would not think about the issues with a touchscreen, there’s bound to be some physical buttons or some sort of alternative control method somewhere.

This is a new idea for Boeing. I actually made up an idea for the new Rolls Royce Trent 8000, a new engine option for the 777x. It was developed from the Trent 1000. It will actually be like the Trent 7000 used on the Airbus A330neo, but bigger engine, of coarse. You should tell Rolls Royce to make that new fuel efficient/awesome aircraft engine.

I was always interested that the 787 fin has a distinct upward slope, unique on modern commercial aircraft as far as I know. That upward slope wasn't there on the 777-200 or 300 but is there on the 777X. Does anyone know of the reason for this change? Nothing on these designs is by chance, so there must be a specific reason.

The rhetoric and commentary from Boeing for 777X regarding commanality with 777, reduced pilot training time and new technologies not found in any other plane sound ominous. I hope they learn from the 737 Max fiasco and test the heck out of this thing before rushing it into service. I also hope they fully document, disclose and throughly update the pilots on the so called new technologies not seen before. That said, I am very excited for the 777X, which I believe would be the flagship of commercial aviation for sometime to come.

I think that the touchscreens are innovative, but the airlines should be able to choose if they want conventional buttons or touchscreen.

If I had to hazard a guess, I doubt any of the flight displays (the four big ones) have any touchscreen functionality. They're probably referring to the FMS screens (two in the center bottom) which the crew uses to input all sorts of data, from performance figures, winds, flight plan information, etc. That's the only one of the displays i can see would even benefit from a touchscreen. Even then, you can see they're flanked by physical keys anyway.

1. It's called a yoke, not a steering wheel, and 2. It's not hard to see the screens. It's just that Boeing uses the yoke instead of a sidestick like Airbus Scarebus does.

Wouldn’t it have been sweet if Boeing implimented the side stick into the 777x but some how made it much more advance then Airbus in a way that it had to same effect as far a safety goes like the yoke does

agha nr FINALLY SOMEONE HAS A BRAIN TO REALIZE THAT. Here why the GE9X will NOT have the chevron anymore. One statement. IT'S A DISADVANTAGE. When NASA was first implementing chevron on the engines of the 787 to reduce noise it caused a small reduction in fuel efficiency. The thing is that Boeing has found an alternative by using a new technology that will reduce noise low enough to eliminate the chevrons for the GE9x. So my friend while the chevrons is sexy and help reduce noise, in reality it's a penalty to fuel efficiency. Basically Boeing is copying Airbus and Rolls Royce by using a new technology to reduce noise without decreasing efficiency to the same extent, hence no chevrons on the Trent XWB.

After 777X, now, Now its time for 767X then 747X then 737X then 727X then 707X then 787X.

Soykan Gecit well the 777X is way larger as it’s a step up of the 777 program. However in terms of tech it also has fold up wings to be able to use existing 777 gates and new touch screens

BEST of ALL PILOTS TAKES COMMAND WHENEVER IS NECESSARY. Not like Airbuses which takes command from pilots if computers sensors "decide" to. This scary "feature" is of the more causes of accidents on Airbuses.

Touch screens in aircraft is a bad idea. Try using it in turbulence. Also, how are the screens going to end up looking after just a few flights... otherwise an awesome office!

Cpt.Flatspot they’ll be so that you have to have 2 fingers to use it, in order to be able to use it in turbulence. Besides, nothing mission critical will be on those touch screens anyways.

As excited as we are for the new planes: We all hope Boeing understands that McDonald Douglas failed when they shelved ingenuity for simply upgrading old designs. This is exactly what Boeing has been doing basically since the 777.

Speedbird welp, Boeing did succeed at making some new things for example, the raked wingtip on 777-300ER, let's just hope they ain't getting on the wrong side of the track in the 777X
