Sorry to remind you that the Dreamliner, which you dub as the A350 "killer" has not seen a single airplane delivered in over a year. Before this 787 was supposed to have likewise "killed" A330s a decade ago, and they are still being produced by Airbus. The reality of the scenario is that as the 80 year old technology involved keeps on maturing, and that includes the cylinder and wings design, kerosene fuel and jet engines, productivity gains become smaller and smaller as time passes. In a century of civil aviation there have just been two (2) real killer developments. One was the introduction of aluminum frames that really displaced the previous wood and canvas fuselages (now that was a real change), and secondly the introduction of jet engines that displaced piston driven predecessors, with momentous gains in speed, fuel consumption and engine reliability, the latter point mostly ignored by the general public). As a distant third we might mention 747 that substantially increased payload capacity and range, changing the way we fly. Yet not in the same league as the above two. Dreamliners, as fine aircraft as they are, will not join the list by any stretch of the imagination.
@garyhughes96492 жыл бұрын
The Dreamliner has been in production for approximately 17 years give or take when they have produced somewhere around 1300 of the Jets. Aviation industry is way to complex to call the 787 a A350 killer, the performance metrics, although important, are not the deciding factor. For starters, many airlines (like Delta) are being forced to buy the A321 XLR as Boeing offers no comparable aircraft meaning these airlines will be more open to expand their Airbus fleet as certifying A321 pilots to fly the A350 is more cost efficient than certifying them (assuming no prior Boeing experience) for the 787. Second, the A350 has mostly been very successful manufacturing-wise, sure there is the paint problem now, but that is a problem that will most likely be solved on future deliveries whereas the new 787s still need to be developed so airlines might opt to get an A350 today as they have good certainty on what to expect compared to the nebulous promises from Boeing which has had manufacturing and certification issues with several aircraft over the last years.

As a passenger I find that very long flights wear me out; it takes a day for me to recover, so flying non-stop doesn't really save me any time. It's best to get a window seat where I can prop a pillow against the interior wall panel and sleep with some support. Getting stuck with a center-aisle seat on a long flight is absolute misery. But the airlines are excited about scheduling long flights, and Boeing and Airbus are providing all the long-range options their customers could ever want.

If you take a look this new model will compete directly with the same range and capacity of 777-9 (As you point out in your video) The 787 was the plane developed for the same market as the old 767. And that is why Boeing started the development of the 777X and is now finishing the fly certificate for the new models 777-8 and 777-9 expected for 2023. For me, the 787-10 HGW is the 777X killer. I don’t know if it’s just me, but I have the impression that this video lacks objectivity. It sounds like a Boeing commercial. God knows I’m a Boeing fan. At 4:10 you indicate that that the 787 uses fly by wire control systems. So does the A350. The A320 family was the first airliner to feature digital fly-by-wire flight control system. Moreover, there is nothing new under the sun, and there is too much repetition. I think the video can be improved with a fair and objective comparison.

Yet airlines are cancelling Boeing orders and buying Airbus due to Boeing's shockingly poor performance in production quality and systems choices of recent years. I have been a Boeing fan for many years however, until they dump a huge chunk of their board and management and the company gets back to the essential safety driven and quality culture they used to operate under, they are on a not so slow road to collapse.
@leonardwl2 жыл бұрын
Boeing has been a dumpster fire since they let the old McDonnell Douglas management run things after the merger. 787 was a great design that is now victim to production quality issues. 777X keeps getting delayed and orders may be cancelled soon. Most airlines who operate the a350-900 don't even utilise it's maximum range , so a 787 -10 ER could be better economically on journeys ranging between 10 000 and 14 000 km where majority of long haul flights are found .

I have a few points to make after seeing this Video. 1. The A350-800 was already cancelled in 2014 2. Only the 787-10 and the A350-900 are comparable in size, so the 787-8, -9 and the A350-1000 are far away from comparing against each other. 3. Im sure that the A350 is not intended as an A330 replaced, its simply to big for doing so 4. Saying the 787-10 and A350-900 seat 440 people is not realistic for most airlines, espacially if your saying the A350-1000, which is clearly bigger than the Dreamliner or the A359, "only" seats 351 people 5. You introduced the ER/LR/HGW Boeing Versions like some major update timproving the plane itself, but its really mostly the increased range (I only have the 777-200LR in mind with major differences). Also does Airbus provide similar Versions on their planes (e.g. A321LR/XLR or the A350ULR you mentioned)

Airbus is selling more 350s than it can build at the moment. Sure, the 787 and 350 compete with each other - but much less than you would think. Use cases for each are often different, especially if you are an airline that is already a mostly Boeing or mostly Airbus shop (ie want to minimise the training and maintenance budget). The 350 is eating the lunch of older Boeing models, not the 787 - but the 787 is definitely not eating the 350's lunch. Especially as the 350 has already gone for more variants of the base model to fill more niches than Boeing will; it could do this because it in so much better a financial position than Boeing (putting lots of -+money into development is no stress). The 350ULR in particualr looks like making a lot of money for Airbus.
