Boeing is a different company than the one before it went public. Now bean counters run the show. For example, after they made the 737 Super Max and discovered that its new engine made the plane fly a little different, to save money, rather than train all the pilots about how to fly the new aircraft, they made some software changes that were supposed to trick the pilots into thinking that the plane flew just like it always had, and of course kept that secret, otherwise pilots might complain. That software update assumed that you would never have any problems with aircraft sensors like the pitot tube--obviously a bad assumption. So, naturally when the sensors were clogged or not working properly, the software went nutzo, and people died. It appears that the simple fix was simply to turn the autopilot off, but the Boeing engineers didn't tell pilots that as part of Boeing's "let's keep a secret" policy. So, is it any surprise that they are struggling now. Engineers have pressure on them to keep costs down at the expense of good engineering. Most engineers are taught in college to try to keep costs down as much as practical, but bean counters want more. Starliner is most likely the product of a bean-counter-led culture. The same goes with the F-35. Lockheed-Martin was willing to pay the Russians for their help in designing a VTOL jet, something they had some experience with. Boeing just simply tried to improve the Harrier design, not taking into account that after decades of that platform's existence, most likely it had already been determined that that design had gone about as far as it could. Bean counters put a Harrier gun to the engineers' heads, not allowing them to think outside the box because that can cost money. If I were NASA, I would rethink my partnership with Boeing. If SpaceX ever goes public, it will probably eventually go the way of Boeing.
@MemeMan_MEMESQUAD2 ай бұрын
SpaceX likely will not go public, as the mission statement of colonizing Mars is entirely at odds with prioritizing investor return

Can we get Sunny and Butch back and then put Boeing CEO up there? I would be SO surprised if NASA ever works with Boeing again after this. Boeing is such a joke at this point.

I didn't watch the video, Ive seen enough, but had to give a thumbs up for Stuck Liner 😆

wouldnt it be better to install 6 seats on Ax4 instead of Crew 9? Ax4 leaves in like 10/14 days after launch and would not have that much cargo needed as maybe crew 9.

@Rockhopper111 You're right but I was considering that if we build a space elevator on the moon, or several actually, regardless of their level of need or use, just the process of making them will push our knowledge in the effort.

Did Rolls-Royce take a page from Gerry Anderson's book? Cool moon base! But no uranium, please. I like the moon in its current orbit.

The video says the contract was awarded in 2027 as a fixed price for starliner. Shouldn’t that date be some year in the past?

Finally some sort of update with the RollsRoyce micro power plant. I mean if we can use them on submarines why not on the moon and Mars. When they expire, find the deepest magma chamber for storage.
@richardlincoln84382 ай бұрын
You don't have to launch a submarine power plant in space. Getting fissionable material into and out of space is your accident prone activity. One accident is unacceptable.

I’m wondering what RR will innovate as a waste heat dissipation mechanism on their reactor. The more power generated the more heat created and only heat radiation in a vacuum is viable infrared radiators. Then spent fuel storage and removal. It’s hot in temperature and still highly radioactive. Hey fun problems to resolve. That’s what people do.
@Adrian-qk2fn2 ай бұрын
They have the same problems with Reactors onboard nuclear submarines. They can use water as a coolant but it has to be a closed loop so no contamination escapes into the environment. I imagine Rolls Royce will apply similar thinking here.
@jefferywise19062 ай бұрын
@@Adrian-qk2fn but in a submarine you have the ocean and a medium to dump waste heat into. Vacuum is entirely different and much more challenging.
@Adrian-qk2fn2 ай бұрын
@@jefferywise1906 If you start dumping heat into the ocean from a nuclear submarine then you render yourself open to detection. Rolls Royce have been building reactors for nuclear submarines that have to be undetectable or as near as they can be. Dumping a whole load of heat into the Ocean is going to make them visible to Thermal Detectors on satellites in orbit.
@jefferywise19062 ай бұрын
@@Adrian-qk2fn oh great so you’re underwater for a week straight and where does all that heat go to? The ocean .

This doesn't make sense. They have already docked Crew 8 and it has 2 empty seats. Why not bring them back on it?
@juliancrooks30312 ай бұрын
Put the extra seats and suits on the Polaris dawn mission and have them swing by and pick up the crew on the way home after their space walk mission that way they can have a full crew swap out on schedule. This makes the most sense. Use the arm that they used to dock the cargo module to push the starliner safely away from the ISS toward Earth and let it burn up on re-entry
@Adrian-qk2fn2 ай бұрын
You can't use Polaris Dawn as the Docking Adapter has been removed to make way for the Airlock in the Nose for the planned EVAs.

dragon would have to do double duty this time if they can undock starliner and have it attach to dragon is possible perhaps do the KSP style deorbit where the two space craft are joint during the deorbit burn where dragon would be using its engines. then before atmospheric re entry both space craft undock from eachother and reorient to reentry angle

Boeing has gone from engineering leader to a worldwide joke. Beancounters, man. If NASA is going to send ballast to the moon instead of a rover, may I suggest the board of directors of Boeing? It can’t hurt.
