My Father was one of ten Airmen killed the day after Thanksgiving Day, 1956 , when their B52B Stratofortress crashed on takeoff from Castle Air force Base. My Mother called me aside the night before to tell me that a Bomber had crashed with 10 Airmen inside, one possibly being my Dad. She told me we would now more the morning., Our house was full of Aunts, Uncle's and Cousins but all were silent when they heard me walking through the kitchen to turn left for the front room. Just as I made my turn, I saw General Eubanks walking into our house through the front door. I will never forget the look of sorrow in the General's eyes. At that moment, he was looking at a 9 year old boy whose heart was breaking. The General never lost his military bearing for a moment, but my first reaction was sorrow for the General knowing that he would be visiting 10 families that morning to tell their boys and girls there father wasn't coming home anymore. I am 71 years old, have enjoyed a wonderful life thanks be to God the Father, God the Son, and the God the Holy Spirit. I have been married 48 years to a wonderful Women, the Mother of our 7 kids and Grandmother to our 11 Grandkids. All of our Family members have the utmost regard for our Military, for our Flag, and for our Country. My Dad, a Hero to our Kids, served his Country as a Captain (posthumously promoted to Major by General Curtis Lemay) Nuclear Radar Bombardier Instructor for the SAC !!!

That is a nice film and I worked on the B-52 D, G, and H models and flew on the G models while at Barksdale and loved all three of them so much. That was the time when we had the Hound Dog missiles which was on both the G & H models and I ended up with a scar to remember those by.

Did anyone mention that one DOES NOT "rotate" a -52 on takeoff. It is virtually impossible, with the tandem gear arrangement. The aircraft is already at the correct alpha for takeoff. All one has to do is the power set and then "hold 'er steady" and it will fly itself off. Good pix of the "wrongs" tho. shows what happens when one mucks around with the yoke on takeoff run..

SAC's Long Rifle. I don't recall when I first heard that phrase but I'm as old as this educational film.

I'm sure that the Boeing engineers who built the B-52A would be surprised to learn that here and now in 2022, preparations are being made to re-engine the H model fleet to continue operations to and beyond 2040. They weren't expecting to be making bombers that would be useful for 70 to 100 years or so.

Is there a window we r EWO would be?
@Spectator1959
@Spectator1959 3 күн бұрын
No, the EWO sat behind the pilots facing rearwards. The Radar Nav and Navigator sat on the lower deck, and they did have small square windows on earlier B-52s, but the windows were removed on later B-52s.
