Just wanted to chime in with my .02 cents as someone with a long standing 20 year plus relationship with Boeing while serving in the military, as a contractor *_to_* Boeing, as a contractor *_for_* Boeing, and as part of their commercial airplane division. There's a common refrain or expression you'll hear on the the factory floor in both Everett and Renton, Washington. *_"Overtime Solves All Problems"_* which leads to burnout and a very high employee attrition and turn over ratio. I remember during my initial training and orientation one of the supervisors commenting that the company needed to hire 100 warm bodies just to find 25 who make it through their first year at Boeing. Don't even get me started on their KUKA robots and FAUB fiasco which turned into a 6 year ordeal with the robots eventually scrapped after repeated failure to make production goals. I was so very happy and elated to get away from that place. It's simple to earn a six figure income while working at Boeing, it's just too bad you won't have anytime to spend all of that money.

Safety absolutely increases your profits, because it eliminates the costs of accident liability. You don't have high payouts and you don't have high insurance premiums. People who shortcut safety processes act like they're trying to be more profitable but if you look at Boeing now that's not working out for them. The part that's criminal, or should be, is that they knew this all along. They were just gambling on how much they were increasing other people's risks and how much liability the government would assign to them for it.

I remember when Boeing's Renton facility was installing the "moving line" for 737's so they could be like Toyota Production Systems. They were/are so proud of that moving line. I have to wonder if the moving line isn't causing mechanics and inspectors to keep stuff moving that probably shouldn't be rushed. They do not want to stop that moving line less they have some explaining to do and likely get their butts chewed out. I'm going on the record to say that moving lines are fine for automotive, and computer cases, etc., but have no place whatsoever in aerospace production.

Doing this procedure the right way shouldn't have increased processing time by more than a couple of seconds. And the procedure was there and skipping it probably didn't speed the line up, but gave that one worker a few extra seconds to wonder why he felt like he missed something. It's the overall attitude of not double-checking in order to be fast that caused somebody to skip steps in the procedure and nobody to see that the steps were skipped before the plane was delivered.

As a Quality Engineer who worked on the 787, etc; why not a word about "Risk Management" or "Risk Mitigation"? Nothing about following existing procedures that are proven to work. @1Grr8Guy
@1Grr8Guy 5 күн бұрын
Procedures only cover foreseen scenarios. When they need to get the door plug out of the way to fix the door seal and rivets issues from Spirit AeroSystems, somebody figured that you only need to swing the door plug out to work on the problem. Therefore, you don't need to remove the door plug, so you don't need to write up a REMOVAL procedure. Now, after the fact, Boeing learned the reason why the closing of the door plug escaped quality control.

@@1Grr8Guysomebody figured that you only need to swing the door plug out to work on the problem. And when the problem became known the very first time it occurred, it should have been looked at closely and a procedure established for avoiding failures due to the shortcut.
@neilkurzman4907
@neilkurzman4907 4 күн бұрын
Then you definitely need to read up on what happened here because you made a guess that’s wrong. You didn’t look at the root cause. The door was only removed to do the rework on the rivets. So there be no paperwork to do anything to the door. It was supposed to be installed already. After the fuselage was repaired, it was sent outside to wait further assembly. A crew went in to make sure the fuselage was sealed to keep the weather out to this end. They put the door on, but they didn’t bolt it in place because that wasn’t their job. Since there was no paperwork generated when the door was removed, there was no paperwork to put it back on, inspected, and close it out with the aircraft. Because it was a non-standard repair there was no paperwork to properly cover it so yes, they did follow the paperwork. And didn’t do work that wasn’t required.

You’re missing the entire point. The answer was nobody that’s why there was no bolts in it because nobody did it. It turns out the door was put on by a crew whose job it was to make sure the plane was weatherproof before it was brought outside to the next stage of assembly. So nobody put the bolts on because there was no paperwork to say it needed to be done. And it appears everybody who looked at it assumed that there was paperwork and it would be done by somebody at some point, but you can’t put parts on a plane without paperwork so they couldn’t do it.

That's an interesting question! If Taylor Swift were to write an endorsement song for President Biden and VP Harris, it might sound something like: Verse 1 (inspired by "Love Story"): "In a world full of division and strife They stood up for hope, for justice, and for life Joe and Kamala, a team of grace Fighting for our future, leaving no one in the shade" Chorus (inspired by "Shake It Off"): "Get ready for a brighter day With Biden and Harris leading the way We'll shake off the hate, we'll shake off the pain And rise up together, like the sun after the rain" Verse 2 (inspired by "Bad Blood"): "They stood up to the bullies, to the ones who sought to divide With courage and compassion, they fought for what's right For equality, for freedom, and for our rights They stood strong, like a rock, shining so bright" Chorus (inspired by "Shake It Off"): "Get ready for a brighter day With Biden and Harris leading the way We'll shake off the hate, we'll shake off the pain And rise up together, like the sun after the rain" Of course, this is just a fictional creation, but it might give you an idea of what a Taylor Swift endorsement song for President Biden and VP Harris could sound like!

Boeing did once have a strong system for managing work and quality. When Boeing acquired McDonnell Douglas, as part of the deal, one of the McDonnell Douglas executives was given a senior executive position at Boeing, with the mission to make Boeing more profitable. The corporate focus shifted away from engineering, quality and excellence, to finance, fighting labor, screwing workers and cutting costs. Like many others, a once great company lost its way, selling its soul for short term gains.

“We must continually improve.” Nice buzzword usage. 😂 Maybe it’s the spirit of continuous improvement that things went wrong to begin with. When you get in your car, you put your seatbelt on. There’s nothing to improve. Just do the action. Stop reinventing the wheel and adhere to your tried and true process.

CEO's stepping down end of 2024, so your wish is granted in a way. The third party safety inspector(s) (multiples) need to be paid for by the FAA, and have zero payroll that Boeing touches. Because the Boeing paid safety instructors (third party or not) is what got them into this mess, partly... and THAT by both FAA and government oversight relaxing of rules/regulations... directly because Boeing asked for that and it was granted. Boeing needs to not be in the equation of safety, the government does, as it was before.

So what you’re saying is you should just go on a rampage without understanding what the failure was. Because that always works. Another inspector wouldn’t have helped there was no paperwork to inspect. And no, someone doesn’t just wander around the fuselage looking at things.

@@blairhoughton7918 Revenue maybe plenty... but commercial airplane has the tiniest profit margin. Both Boeing's Commercial and Defense sectors have been operating at a loss since 2021 and their only profit generator is Servicing and Contracting. If the CEO is especially ruthless, they can cut the cost of commercial assembly AND cheapen out on their services/parts/maintenance plan.

IT WASN'T A BREAKDOWN, IT WAS DELIBERATELY OMITTED TO SAVE TIME AND TIME IS MONEY.
@blairhoughton7918
@blairhoughton7918 5 күн бұрын
I don't think it was deliberate. The procedure existed to check it. The people just forgot to. And the people who were supposed to check that the check was done also forgot. The attitude and tempo being set by management certainly contributed to that. Though it is possible that somebody decided to make it policy only to do checking at random instead of making sure that every box was checked. Then there would be an element of deliberate failure.
