The Boers just wanted their way of life in a land they had carved it out and the Brits wanted the resources and gold and diamonds. The Boers tactics in the war were way ahead of their time the classic fire and movement and they were excellent shots with Mauser rifles that outshot the long Lee Enfield and the Boers used that to great effect in Black week in December 1899 when the British were defeated 3 times in that week. Of-course it could not last and the British war machine fired up and by late 1900 it had to be guerrilla tactics. However the Boers did Britain a huge favour by highlighting all their shortcomings and the army was overhauled in the Haldane reforms in 1904 and by 1914 when the war with Germany broke out the British army was lean fluid flexible and hugely experienced with excellent weapons and professional officers and that army of 1914 fought to a standstill a German army 3 times it's size. If the Boer War never happened and Britain went to war in 1914 like they did in 1899 they would have lost in 1914 and that would have changed the whole world we live in Thumbs up for the Boers 👌

Your reply very correct and informative but just a small technicality:- Please, the Boers did not fight a 'Guerrilla' war! In the early stages we fought set battles Won 87% of these until our artillery ammunition ran out and the english empire pumped in hundreds of thousands of soldiers and millions of tons of materials. Guerrilla warfare was used by the Spanish in the Napoleonic wars to snipe at the French. As general Christian de Wet stated "If we were gorrillas, the gorrilas made a mockery of english military superiority"! General de Wet formulated 'Kommando Warfare' and our Fore fathers then used it! Erwin Rommel studied de Wet and de la Rey in detail, Swartzen?(Gulf Wars) studied all three in detail Show less
