That impatiens looks beautiful! I've gone straight back to Norfolk reeds and flag iris in mine, I'll probably regret it come maintenance time but they just grow so well for me and had tonnes available

Thanks so much for your free resource Kev. So much good info in your videos. I'm wondering if you'd do a video on every plant that you've learnt that will grows in substrate (no soil). It will overlap with similar video you have but I'm having trouble finding that exact resource. Thanks in any case for everything you do.

I’d personally try any aquatic plant direct in the substrate. In a new pond certain species may struggle but as the substrate ages and nutrients make their way in it should be fine.

I put together a list of the plants that were mentioned for myself - Bacopa monnieri (water hyssop), Impatiens, Upright Milfoil, Dwarf Sweet Flag, Elephant Ears, Canna Lilies.

How much less efficient will the bog filter be in winter when the plants die back and is there anything I should do to compensate?

Could you please help me out? I'm just in the process of making a bog filter and I'm wondering ...is it best to use a gravel/clay ball mix? Also do the plant roots need to retain any soil or should that be washed off so they go straight into the gravel and get all their nutrients from the pond by-products? Thanks 😃

The advantage of clay balls is they are lightweight, round (not sharp) and easy to work with. But it doesn’t matter for the functionality of the bog filter all you really need is something that will allow water to pass through and provide a surface for the nitrifying bacteria. In regards to the plants I always remove all the soil, they will get their nutrients from the pond. Hope that helps 👍

I have floating plants in my bog filter which has deep water gather at the top before going back into the pond via a pipe. Is this OK?

Yeah mate watercress is fine 👍 it grows quick so just thin it out if it gets too thick👍
