Extended version! The second chorus of Ira Gershwin's wonderful lyric to "They All Laughed" was cut from "Shall We Dance" in 1937. Here's audio of Ginger Rogers singing the entire song (it occurs when the image freezes) while Fred Astaire scowls. Fortunately, they eventually dance!

Ginger was a Christian Scientist, teetotal non-smoker, a sportswoman and outdoor girl. Yet she rapidly put on weight in her forties, wore terrible wigs and wound up in a wheelchair. Sometimes Time the tortoise overtakes the healthiest hare. Or did five husbands take their toll?

For a while I played sax in a big band in Manhattan (the Lynn Oliver Orchestra) in the late '70s that featured young singers up front who could convincingly reproduce the sound(s) of the male and female crooners of the 1930s and '40s. Lynn possessed original arrangements from the Dorsey orchestras, Count Basie, Artie Shaw, Harry James, Larry Elgart, et al. And the brilliant, witty songwriting of that earlier era! After a night on that time-machine bandstand I would hear contemporary songs on the radio and so many of them just sounded dull and uninspiring. With a few notable exceptions to my ear and sensibility the output of my generation lacked much of the intelligent, worldly wit (in both melodies and lyrics) that was the hallmark the era of the Gershwins, Julie Stein, Irving Berlin, Frank Loesser, Cole Porter, Johnny Mercer and others. That sophisticated wit had simply evaporated and people took themselves SO seriously.

Good call to make the second freeze include Edward Everett Horton with his renowned double-take. This arrangement is the best and most swinging of Gershwin before 'Fascinating Rhythm' in 'Lady Be Good'. Wonder what he would have thought about Ginger's near-speak-singing, He had expressed surprising doubts about his old pal Fred's delivery of the score in a letter, but he was unwontedly irritable in his last few months, so it might have been that accursed tumor kvetching. This was the sequence that got me interested in old-time musicals years ago, and I still put it in the Astaire-Rogers top five. In a few minutes it encapsulates everything that made them supreme: wit, charm, style in voice, instrumentation and choreography, the cunning pretense of spontaneity- and the furtherance of the story by these means, despite the apparent standalone setting of an improvised interlude in a nightclub. Ginger is cajoled into singing. Fred then inveigles her into dancing. Her main squeeze looks on complacently. Fred at first takes the lyrics as a rebuff, then strikes back by turning himself from Petrov the phony Russian toe dancer into an all-American hoofer, meeting Linda on her own Broadway ground. Side by side on the piano, they have to reassess their relationship.

@@boinx1234 True enough. Fred wanted to emphasize his musical and vocal side, while the Gershwins sought to break through as movie composers after being suspected of going longhair with 'Porgy'- George cabled the studio bosses at RKO that 'I am out to write hits'. This was why Fred was annoyed when the scene on the ferry introducing 'They Can't Take That Away from Me' was shortened. He insisted on its being a big centerpiece in 'The Barkleys': a tribute to GG's memory which also evoked the celebrated romantic pas de deux of his past.

@@esmeephillips5888 It was bizarre that there was no dance for Can't Take That Away. Also, at the time, Ira complained about how their score was presented, saying that neither Fred nor Rogers were good singers. He retracted that years later.
