Roger Propes it's actually the dress, it's bias cut so it's sort of like a slinky. it's kind of the same as Chinese hand cuffs, the more it pulls the slimmer and longer it gets. in this case, the twirling makes the dress sort of ride up thus shortening it.
@sarahmac28877 жыл бұрын
Late to the party but I want to add that they used to put lead weights in the hem of the dress so it would flair elegantly :)
@globalman7 жыл бұрын
Thank you Kell + I believe most are affected by the beauty but few are really conscious of these clothes and even fewer recognise or have given credit to how difficult it was for Ginger to do what she did compared to Fred. She had to do all those steps, movements and gestures on high heels and often backwards to his leading. In addition she had to concentrate on the movement of the cloth of her dresses/ gowns. Everyone may think this was all by chance and the laws of physics but it was not. She made it look easy but it wasn't. To get fabric to move the way her dresses looked took much practice and focus.

When Fred danced with Eleanor, it was flat out hoofing. Even Fred said she made him work too hard. With Cyd he made beautiful, artistic lines. We did not for a moment believe she was in love with him. When Fred danced with Rita one had the impression he had the infatuation for her of an older man that went unreciprocated. But with Ginger in the RKO originals... the way her body yielded to him, the expression on her face, that was love. Even if expertly simulated, it convinced.

Now that is a truly graceful pair of human beings. It is something that approaches "Magical" but at the very least is majestic in how they "Flow" together like there are strings between them to synchronize the forward and backward movements. It is mesmerizing! She is one pretty lady. And she remained pretty right up until she died in her mid 80s around 1995. Her eyes could look right into your soul, then she would say something in her cute "girl next door" voice and WHAM, she had a piece of your heart. She worked so hard for what she wanted, and she got it, and deserved it, too. Can you imagine dancing like that in HIGH HEELS - OMG! I'd be in a wheelchair for life.

The second sequence which is from 'Swingtime' (1938) was Ginger's favourite dance. It took 48 takes before they were happy and didn't finish filming until 4a.m., on at least one occasion Fred's toupee fell off at the end of a perfect take when she spins and Fred catches her. And yes, her shoes were red with blood on the inside but she insisted on continuing. Eat your hearts out Strictly Come Dancing!

+Jeff Wallder You can actually see that she is wearing two pairs of shoes - one on the lower level and another for those spine tingling spins. Her feet bled into the first pair and the director told them to stop but they wanted to finish the entire dance. Hence the new shoes which do not have the straps the original pair had.
