Okay but that whole thing with Beatrice and the doll and her father in ep 11 would also explain why she got so attached to the doll Hollyhock gave her earlier in the season and why she so distraught when BoJack took it and threw it over his deck

Time's Arrow is one of the darkest, most disturbing tv episodes I've ever seen. The last five or so minutes (from when Butterscotch admits to Beatrice that he had an affair to the depressing scene with BoJack and Beatrice) are some of the most harrowing I've ever seen in any show, and I legit had to take a break from binging because the episode shook me up so badly. The last time any media fucked with me that much was when I watched The Shining for the first time. Easily my 2nd favorite episode of the show (behind Free Churro, of course). This show is fucking brilliant and is so underappreciated.

Due to "Free Churro" I think "Times Arrow" gets less respect and love than it should. Don;t get me wrong, Free Churro made me cry like a baby and the writing along with the voice acing deserves all the awards. But Times Arrow....how the animators were able to depict Alzheimer's (something I am dealing with via my father) was simply genius. Also the writers gift of making you finally truly develop some sort of compassion for Beatrice was nothing short but amazing. It's just one of those episodes that..even with all the props its given, it doesnt feel like its enough.

Good to have you back. Something I noticed about the end to this season when compared to the end of last season is how the roles reversed. At the end of Season 3, BoJack seemed miserable while everyone else had a somewhat positive and hopeful ending. In Season 4, while I would t call it completely positive or negative, BoJack is at least better off when compared to Mr. Peanut utter and Diane at the end of Season to Season 4.

Absolutely agree with you, ep 2 and 11 were the best... Great review. Personally I don't think s4 was less depressing than s3, just less eventful and Bojack wasn't as self-destructive. I found s4 a lot more harrowing with Beatrice's amazing story arc. That could also be because I have witnessed illness in my own family, so it hit closer to home. 'Time's Arrow' was one of the most scary, disturbing pieces of TV I've ever seen. Ep 11 always delivers such a meaty climax to each season, I love it.
@Johnny2Cellos7 жыл бұрын
Thanks for commenting! Beatrice's story was definitely incredibly depressing and also provided a ton of insight into BoJack because we can infer a lot about his upbringing. But yeah, BoJack's story was optimistic and I think he moved in a positive direction for the first time in the series :)

Oh yeah I guess I should have touched on Diane and Mr. PB a little more! Personally I don't see Mr. Peanutbutter and Diane lasting much longer after this season. I agree, this would have been a totally acceptable ending for BoJack in my opinion. The OTHER characters, however, would have had a really unsatisfying end! Season 4 was my favorite season even after season 6 finished, especially with regards to BoJack. It's a season of self reflection. My favorite episode overall was a day in BoJack's mind, when he's tormented by his intrusive thoughts. To think that it was supposed to be a Judah centered episode. LOL
@noahh61863 жыл бұрын
One thing I just realized while watching these reviews ties into the whole "anthro animal" world that the show takes place in. Obviously three of the main characters are specific animals because of the qualities those animals represent: Bojack is stubborn, Mr. PB is happy-go-lucky, and PC is resilient. However, it just hit me that the writers went the extra mile and gave us something unexpected from each species choice. Throughout the show, since Mr. PB is a dog, we'd expect him to be loyal. But, not only has he had four failed marriages, none of which he really reflects on, but he also actively cheats on Pickles twice. Princess Carolyn is a cat, so we expect her to be mysterious, or even very independent. Yeah, she gets everything done of her own accord, but she's not *socially* independent in the slightest, working as an agent as an excuse to provide help to people for her own sake while also using it as justification for her lack of a family, which we know she wants desperately. Bojack, finally, is a horse, and horses have an odd fragility to them. Like, if a horse gets seriously injured or sick, it's usually significantly more realistic to just put them out of their misery. However, Bojack goes through a lot, even including serious injuries, illnesses, addictions, etc., so we'd all expect the show to end in his death. Instead, he's one of the oldest major characters in the show, and it seems he's got a lot of life left to live. They're subtle inversions, but they just add to the already monumental list of reasons I love this show.
@hopedwyer79475 жыл бұрын
Not sure of the significance of this- but in S6 when Bojack helps a girl break out of rehab, he tells her father, “She just wanted to see her baby.” Reminded me of Bojack’s mother always saying that she wanted her baby

I enjoyed BoJack Horseman season 4, but I felt the show works best when the main characters have interactions with one another. I wasn’t to fond of the Mr. Peanutbutter running for governor plot, primary because I felt the trump parody now felt dated and overdone. When Mr. Peanutbutter is not on screen though I find myself invested in BoJack and Princess Carolyn’s plot. Todd’s plot was sweet but I felt the strengths this season orbits around BoJack. I felt the decision to focus less on BJ this season wasn’t a wise decision, especially after season 3’s finale. Overall this season was good but not BoJack at his absolute finest.

I hated the diane gets a gun storyline, felt super liberal... well it was, and california is. Would've liked it to take a more neutral or satirical take on it 'cause it just gave me a headache especially with the "girl with a gun = guy with no gun" thing.

I would say it is a satire of super liberal California

I'm a little sad this review wasn't a little longer. It kind of felt like you skipped over most of the episodes, and even the two you chose to stay on (ep 2 and 11) felt rushed! You missed a lot of great details, and hell, you didn't even mention the episodes Stupid Piece of Sh*t and Ruthie!

Same! This was my first ever BoJack review and when I thought I should keep my reviews brief, but as you can see from my later reviews, I didn’t stick to that plan haha. Especially because season 4 is my favorite season!

@@Johnny2Cellos You think so? Would it be possible for you to make a new release of the season 4 review somewhere further down the line, now when you have the context of the full show and are a little more experienced? Feels bad that your favourite season had to have the most rushed review
@Johnny2Cellos4 жыл бұрын
I've thought about it a lot, but I'm also planning on covering 3 or 4 episodes from this season individually for my episode breakdowns at some point, like my latest View From Halfway Down video. I'm still considering if a full re-review is warranted, but I'll be talking about a lot of these episodes in the future regardless!

My only complaint with the show is the governour plot. It was useless filler and not funny nor entertaining. It was still good but it doesnt fit.

Bojack is one of the best TV shows out there. I would even go as far as to compare it with Sopranos and The Wire. Calling it cartoon show is a disservice.
@Johnny2Cellos4 жыл бұрын
I think you’re just underestimating cartoons ;)
@robynreanimates35034 жыл бұрын
I don't think it's fair to imply cartoons are inherently less powerful. Animation is an important medium and is capable of a lot of things that live action just isn't

Best season of Bojack so far, we get the vesieral raw emotional journey into Beatrice's past and her current declining state with Bojack, the heart-wrenching story with Princess Caroline and the hopeful and sweet ending with Bojack/Hollyhock.
