Julle mag terug kykend naar julle verlede, baie trots wees !

We were the best trained and motivated military in Africa at the time. As usual politicians started everything and then wouldn't support the troops wholeheartedly. When the whole thing ended with whimpering politicians it was the men on the ground who got the blame while the aforementioned politicians were coining the money. People always want to blame the troops but they should remember that most of us were taught that defending our country and way of life was the honourable thing to do.I believed that I owed a duty to my country to serve as my grandfather had during world war two.I am not sorry that I did.I think that most of us who served did so for that reason and nothing else.

I served in the SADF 1985-1990 in the permanent force, South Africa will never ever have a military like that again. We where young boys, fresh out of high school and became men real fast! Many men lost their lives for a country that was once a safe place to live. Today it’s one of the unsafest places, thanks to the ANC, with their corruption. The new SADF is embarrassing, a joke at best!

SADF was the most effective Defence Force in the whole South Hemisphere, and not only in Africa! I still have a vivid memory of those days of evil, when Portugal decided to abandon its overseas colonies. In fact, It was the SADF who came to save hundreds and hundreds (if not thousands) of Portuguese civilians who had to flee from Angola's barbaric civil war, in 1975. It had as many English speaking South Africans in active duty as Afrikaners in fact my three brothers and i, all in the MAG together at the same time, were born in Ireland and served SA well, All in front line Ops and all did our time with Honour. The SADF wasn't just a bunch of afrikaners, I'm a German South African and I served in the SADF with MANY other German, English , Portuguese and Greek South Africans. Together with the afrikaners, Colored guys and the Africans we were the SADF who fought in the bush war. At times it felt like a mini UN in the bush, we even had a Frenchie with us who wanted to join the French Foreign legion once the war was over. ( I still wonder from time to time if he made it. ) I served with 501 signal regement in Southwest, we were a mix of Afrikaners, English, German and Portuguese. Other regements who operated with us were 5 SAI ( SAI = South African Infantry Battalion ) which were mostly Colored troops. Tiffies ( Mechanics / Enegeniers ) A mix of all races. 32 Battallion mostly African Troopers with some white Officers and NCO'S. Last but curtainly not least Parabats who were made up of White/ colored and African Troopers. I also served in the Townships with them. ( Various regements over time )

It is a truly a great to feel your pride and honor. Thank you for your sharing your spirit. Also, as I heard from many South African friends who were war veterans, blacks, also often from UNITA or non-communists, served alongside them while in Angola and Namibia. My friends say that although Afrikaners predominated, the fighting force was much more diverse and inclusive than it is often made out to be. I feel very lucky to have worked with these former soldiers. Thank you for sharing your experiences with the rest of us.

France on the other hand gets painted unfairly as a bunch of cowards, without looking at the complete record. For example, in WWII France's military got quickly and solidly beaten by the initial German offense. (It was not because of lack of courage, but rather incompetence, from poor strategy, organizational planning, and the fact the French did not have a body of water protecting them that did them in.) However, the French ultimately prevailed in WWI by holding the line tenaciously, despite losing millions, and having their countryside destroyed.

Don't think it was just the communist menace because USA played the most important role obliging SADF to withdraw from Angola in 1975 on the eve of this country independence. Now that I'm older I can't help but think about the price that was paid against communism by our parents and previous generation. If we run away to another country all it means is we reject what was done for us. Now we are facing communism/sociaism again and we may have to pay the price again for the next generation to be free.

En so waai die wind, my kind, En so waai die wind, ons blind, En so waai die wind, my kind, Mos alles weg, Maar dis diep in jou gebore, Dat niks is ooit verlore. En hy vra my deur die stories van hoe gaan dit nog op Maties, En of ons nog ons taal praat want hy weet dis uit ons boeke, En hy wens vir my 'n vrou toe, Wat die haat 'n bietjie stil kan maak, Want dit loop mos deur ons are, Word net sterker deur die jare, En so waai die wind, my kind, En so waai die wind, ons blind, En so waai die wind, my kind, Mos alles weg, Maar dis diep in jou gebore, Dat niks is ooit verlore En hy hoef dit nie te sê, Want dis in sy oë, 'n Trots wat my laat skaam voel 'n trots van bo, En so waai die wind, my kind, En so waai die wind, ons blind, En so waai die wind, my kind, Mos alles weg, Maar dis diep in jou gebore, Dat niks is ooit verlore Ja, dis diep in jou gebore, Dat niks is ooit verlore.

@user-cr8yd3bp6u No, I just want to remind you something that the Africans would not accept Soviet relationships with White SA if it really established it.

I don't know if Bok van Blerk will do this, possibly if he is asked.

My Grandfather's getting old for all his ailments And sometimes he gets angry, but he is a good man He is getting close to 86 but in the lines of his eyes Through the war of changes, you can see that he is spent Then his eyes brighten and I see a story coming About the years when our people begged for protection About a botherhood that was born and the fire of those years Still runs in his veins. He sees me frown (and explains) Thus the wind blows, my child It blows until we are blinded And thus the wind blows, my child It blows everything away But born deep within you Is the knowledge that nothing is ever lost And he asks me throughout the stories How things are at university Do we still speak our language Because he knows there are no more books for it And he wishes me a good wife who can temper my hatred Because it runs in my veins and grows stronger through the years Thus the wind blows, my child It blows until we are blinded And thus the wind blows, my child It blows everything away But born deep within you Is the knowledge that nothing is ever lost He doesn't need to say it Because it's in his eyes A pride that puts me to shame A pride from above Thus the wind blows, my child It blows until we are blinded And thus the wind blows, my child It blows everything away But born deep within you Is the knowledge that nothing is ever lost That is the best I could do with the translation. Afrikaans is a very idiomatic language and much of it is metaphorical. There are also some words like 'mos' which has no real English translation and the closest I can get to something in English is 'it goes without saying' or 'you should know' or 'as you know'. But I hope that at least the song makes sense to you and whoever else wanted a translation. I am sure there is someone who has a far better understanding of this beautiful and deeply meaningful language who could offer you something better in the way of a translation.
