The South African Border War, forged unbreakable bonds among the soldiers who fought in its harsh and unforgiving terrain. We were far from home and facing the constant threat of danger, came to see each other not just as friends, but as brothers. The camaraderie born out of shared hardship and the need for unwavering trust was profound and enduring.
In the dusty, arid landscapes of southern Angola and northern Namibia, we the soldiers depended on each other for survival. Every patrol, every mission, demanded absolute faith in one another. A single moment of hesitation or doubt could mean the difference between life and death. This mutual reliance bred a deep sense of loyalty and kinship. We became a family, bonded by our shared experiences and the weight of responsibilities.
In the quiet moments between battles, soldiers would gather around campfires, their faces illuminated by the flickering light. It was during these times that we shared our deepest fears, hopes, and dreams. The war created a space where the usual barriers of rank and background dissolved, allowing us to open our hearts to one another. Stories of loved ones back home, childhood memories, and personal struggles were exchanged, each man listening with an understanding that only those who have faced the same trials could truly comprehend. (until today wife’s and children can not understand this.)
The trust among the soldiers was absolute. In the heat of combat, they knew they could rely on the man next to them, no matter what. This trust extended beyond the battlefield, it was evident in the way they looked out for each other in everyday life, whether it was sharing scarce supplies, standing watch while others slept, or offering a comforting word when the weight of the war became too much to bear.
Through the crucible of the South African Border War, these soldiers formed a brotherhood that would last a lifetime. The bonds they created were more than just a product of necessity, they were forged in the fires of shared adversity and tempered by the countless acts of kindness, bravery, and sacrifice that defined their time together. In each other, they found not just allies, but confidants and friends for whom they would do anything, knowing the man next to you felt the same.
Even years after the war, the memories of those bonds and the trust they shared remain vivid. The soldiers carry with them the knowledge that they were part of something greater than themselves, a brotherhood that transcended the horrors of war and stood as a testament to the strength of the human spirit in the face of adversity.

Pathetic old soldiers who cant get over how bad ass they thought they were. Enslaved millions of people for hundreds of years and then got their asses kicked out. Big surprise, same thing happened in America when the Brits tried to exploit us. And also the very brave Vietnamese ( who I fought).
