Now this is how photography tutorials should be done. Awesome! I've already been aware how to get bokeh with my camera and lenses, but your video popped up as suggestion and here is the fun fact... I've been aware of it because you taught me how to do it, with this video a few years. You do a great job to introduce people into photography techniques!

Thank you for the tutorial-- very helpful! I noticed you were able to adjust the brightness from time to time while filming -- is this a feature on all Nikon cameras? I was curious as to how you were able to do that, like when you lowered the brightness to show us on the camera your shot of the bokeh.

Hi, Thanks for sharing this. I just got my camera a few weeks ago and thought this looked fairly easy, however you can see the light wires in all of the shots. I am using a 50mm prime set as you prescribed and have even tried slower shutter speeds thinking that might help but no luck. Thanks for any words of wisdom.

I noticed this too, so I took a good look at my tripod and found that I can mount my camera sideways on the mounting plate. Now to tip sideways I do what normally causes the camera to tip up and down. It is a little awkward, but I can now do vertical shots easily. Hope this helps, Susie

For beginners: remember that Bokeh on Full Frame cameras looks different from Bokeh on APS-C and Micro 4/3s cameras. On a smaller sensor, a wider aperture lets in just as much light as on a full-frame camera, but you get less background blur. There are plenty of good videos out there demonstrating this. And as this video demonstrates, aperture and sensor size aren't the only things to consider. The distance of the background makes a *huge* difference. If your subject is standing with a faraway vista behind them, you can get background blur even at F11. And the longer your focal lenght, the more pronounced this effect is. One last touch. Having a light source on your subject also helps with foreground/background separation. It can give your subject more visual "value" and create more contrast between the edges of the subject and the out-of-focus background. If you want that effect of the subject looking as if it's popping out of the background, the lighting is arguably more important than the blur. Don't have a light at hand? Pick a dark background! The effect in this video would have been much less impressive if the door where the lights hang was white. The deep brown really helped the photos.

So the aperture setting for the 50mm and 200mm are opposite when you were composing your shot? With the 50mm you had it 1.8 where with the 200mm it was the extreme opposite.

@PhotoExtremist it was written in the roman alphabet as bokeh, but the "e" sound in Japanese is closest the english "ay". The 'H" is the added at the end to show that the word has 2 syllables instead of being "boke", like "spoke". source: Wikipedia [e̞] This is a pure e, unlike the English "ay", which is a diphthong. An example. [ple̞ː] 'play' is similar the the "eh" in "bokeh". Think if it as "bowquet", like bow + the quet from "Bouquet" of flowers.

Your camera is not good for this. But dont worry, there is a way. Use a magnifying glass in front of the lens for macro. This is the cheapest option. The slightly more expensive one is to buy an old compact digital camera with filter thread in front of the lens (you can buy old used for 20 bucks) + used close-up filter (close up lens) (10, 20 bucks) that fits the filter thread size. The other option for the best "bokeh" will be old film SLR, you can get them for 20 bucks + 10 bucks for lens (praktica MTL5 + helios 44-2 is a good combination for this price) + close-up filter or macro extension tube (in this case M42 screw mount it may cost like 5, 10 bucks) and shoot on film. Of course, you can buy used DSLR, like canon eos 300D, with lens, battery, memory card, you are still under 100 bucks.

@petrmaly9087
@petrmaly9087 10 жыл бұрын
AGShiningStar "Bokeh" itself just means "quality of area out of focus". For this "everything out of focus" you need camera, that allows to pre-fix focus on something (and than you take it away and make your shot, sadly, I dont know, which digitl compact to use for this) or any camera with manual (only, or optional) focusing. If you dont use some manual focus compact from 1980, you would probably need SLR, or DSLR.

When I got into photography back in the late 60's, we didn't have bokeh--all we had was "Nice background!" Especially longer lenses paired with extension tubes. Very good vid! Thanks!

Origin The term comes from the Japanese word boke (暈け or ボケ), which means "blur" or "haze", or boke-aji (ボケ味), the "blur quality". The Japanese term boke is also used in the sense of a mental haze or senility.[9] The term bokashi (暈かし) is related, meaning intentional blurring or gradation.
