I think one of the best things about the first Marvel Ultimate Alliance was that it introduced a lot of casual gamers to the wider universe of Marvel. From SHIELD, Mandarin, Asgard, Atlantis, etc. It was fanservice galore in the best ways possible. Then MUA2 adapted the Civil War storyline, which was pretty drab in terms of settings. MUA3, while good, just didn't have the same magic as MUA1 as it was mostly fanservice for the Thanos arc from the MCU. As a casual fan in the early 2000s who was introduced to Marvel by the Spider-Man and the X-Men movies, the idea of Spider-Man and Wolverine going to Atlantis to help Namor was like a fever dream, lmao
@newageBoundhippie3 жыл бұрын
the gameplay also got worse with each sequel....MUA2 stripped down a lot of the RPG elements and replaced the fun reference filled sim missions with generic ones ( not to mention cutting down alt costumes to just 1 per hero ) while MUA3, being a Team Ninja developed game, devolved into boring counter & dodge focused combat and replaced the simulator missions altogether with frustrating and not remotely fun challenges while also being grindy as hell ( and also dropped the ball on alt costumes...most are just weird palette swaps instead of actual costumes fans would actually like )

I don't think it's a wholly bad game per say, but its development cycle and messed up execution on a lot of the franchise's classic elements is fascinating. It's also seemingly killed the entire Versus brand, so there's a lot there. Then again, going too in depth on it would take away from exploring the exceptional early MCU games.

Fun fact about why Marvel Ultimate Alliance seemingly and randomly skipped the GameCube despite both X-Men Legends games coming to it: It didn't. It was supposed to also be there. The devs were making *Samus Aran* into a playable character for the GameCube port but when they showed it to Nintendo, it was on a PS2 build of the game, so Nintendo flipped their shit and assumed they were about to put a Nintendo character on the PS2 version (instead of...y'know...understanding it's a fucking multiplat game and ONE OF THEM has to be the base...) and canceled the GameCube port. There's pictures and footage of Samus and everything, her rocking her METROID PRIME look even. We could have had Samus fight alongside Spider-Man and Wolverine, but Nintendo were a bunch of pissy babies jumping the gun. If you're wondering why Samus specifically, remember that Metroid has always been more popular in the West than in Japan. These devs clearly liked Metroid Prime to boot, so it only made sense to want to pay tribute to it on the GameCube.

Cartoons are definitely now over reliant on holding the MCU as a crutch to attract new viewers of children. Something like Avengers: Earth’s Mightiest Heroes could not exist because it’s core value is focusing on the comics as inspiration. I will give props to the Insomniacs Spider-Man game taking a good amount of stuff from the comics like making Mr. Negative a central villain and sprinkling in references to characters like Swarm. Guardians while my fear upon starting it to see how the game could cram Ego or Ronan as villains was surprised to see the game take so much from the Dan Abnett and Andy Lanning era of comics over Gunn’s interpretation of the team. Main villains being the Universal Church Of Truth, characters like Ko-Rel show up from the Nova comics, Mantis is closer to her comic counterpart, references to characters like Darkhawk and Moondragon. I would say currently if they go a similar route with the Wolverine game and focus a lot on comics stuff like they did with Spider-Man and Guardians fans will be happy. Avengers is just not a great game so seeing characters like Hawkeye’s neighbor Gilbert show up in the game is cool but the core gameplay is just not fun anymore. The cartoons definitely need to be shaken out of focusing on the films though. Like I’ve always said it was a comic book company at the start and not everything needs to be plugged into the MCU for people to enjoy. TLDR: The comics should be held up and appreciated like the films and ignoring them for other adaptations makes the writers and artists who are creating the Marvel Universe seem unimportant compared to the films. Go read Chip Zdarsky’s Daredevil people it’s really good.

Really shouldn't have been added! It had a good story, the character's (to me) were likable and good. Combat specifically is where it beat Avengers in by not using "RPG" mechanics (Sure your stuck playing Peter for the entire game, but it's still leagues better than Avengers) and surprise, surprise it's not a Bug Ridden Mess! Another game to prove Single Player Story Driven Games will beat out Multiplayer forced ones any day of the weak (especially when your LAZY about it, there's so much they could have done to make Avengers decent, but they chose to be lazy and cheap, and got back what they invested!). I'm not praising GotG as a Super Top tier game (If I put it on a Tier List of Games from F rank to S Rank, it's be in either the B or A rankings). But If I had to pick one game I don't regret buying at full price, it's Guardians of the Galaxy (Lucky I RENTED for Free Avengers, and wasn't surprised that my gut feeling told me not to buy it! If the Guardians was equally terrible, I'd never buy a Crystal Dynamic game again, Lucky they won that bet LOL)

Ngl, lots of respect for Barking Lizard for the effort and actual honest attempt at making the art and backgrounds look good and varied for an underpowered handheld

Adamantium Rage's "stereotypical I'm In Japan soundtrack" is actually significant for essentially replicating the Grime genre of dance music 10 years before the genre came about

I'm honestly surprised that Crystal Dynamics Avengers didn't get more than just one line in the video despite broken dev promises, glitchy gameplay, ofuscated stats and gear with random rolls, repetitive combat, and no real content.

This has nothing to do with games but growing up I never cared for the X-Men cartoon. I don't know why, I just could never get into it and my friends at school would always ask me if I would watch it with them if I came over. I would try and I would always get bored watching it. I guess I just preferred the comedic cartoons. I never got into the Spiderman cartoon either. However now that I think about it, I did really like the Batman animated series and Gargoyles and they were more focused on action and storytelling. Who knows? I remember liking some of the Spiderman and X-Men reboots that came later on though on Kids WB.

Hey! Captain America: Super Soldier is actually a decent game. An aggressively average game, yes. But decent and fun to play. The other ones, yeah I'd agree. I played the demo for the Iron Man movie game, and concluded it wasn't worth playing due to the bad controls.

One marvel game from PS2 that I never hear anyone talking about it is Marvel Nemesis. It's bad, but I have good memories

I honestly think Sega Avengers would have been better than Square Enix Avengers. At least that wouldn't have been a exploitative live service game. Did Square loose the license when they sold all that IP to invest in Crypto?

Avengers IS bad. It's not nearly as bad as anything on this list, but it's still not all that good

Why does Donkey Kong Country look so good, but every other game that attempts psuedo-3D sprites looks like absolute hot garbage? The GBA is full of game using the 3d render sprites and they all look awful.

I love the Captain America Super Soldier game, it's the one MCU game I played that was very good and the only other I played of SEGA's MCU games was Thor which I played the PS3 version and encountered enough technical issues that it scared me off from finishing it, I did love X-Men Origins the Game and the early 3D Spider-Man games though.

I wasn't the biggest Hulk fan either until I read Immortal Hulk. Hulk comics within the horror genre is just such a good mix. I have no idea why Marvel either hasn't done it before or I've never known them to do it before.

The Captain America game on PS3/360 was pretty good. It's very much a Cap version of Batman: Arkham Asylum, and that's no bad thing. Sega's The Incredible Hulk game for that generation is also a lot of fun, and very much comes across as a spiritual sequel to The Incredible Hulk: Ultimate Destruction for the Xbox/PS2/GameCube. Plus you can smash Trump Tower in it. That's worth the price of admission alone. And of course, there were multiple excellent Spider-Man titles from 2000 onwards, starring in PS1. Not the Spider-Man 3 movie tie-in though. That was dire.

The worst I ever played was The Amazing Spider-Man (1989 DOS). I know you attempt to give things a pass for being, just...old. But this was a title I played when I had nothing else and I STILL couldn't care enough to finish it. There was one point where I got into an area I hadn't been to yet beyond the grease chamber, by sticking my web to the one tiny section of ceiling that wasn't too slippery for you and then pulling my butt along the slick floor. Decades later I watched a playthrough of someone who beat it and...that stupid, jank method of getting out of that room is apparently the Intended Route. When I did it I literally thought I'd done a sequence-break and it's literally the only way to proceed. Also it's a puzzle game and all enemies are invulnerable. Some of them you can freeze in place temporarily with web shooters but you'll still take damage if you touch them even while they're frozen, making some tight corridors impossible to get through unharmed because giant rats clog the entire pipe. To its credit, it is Amazing. But the things that amazed me about it aren't the kind of thing a game company wants you thinking about.

Trust me, I was alive, that Wolverine menu music is totally 90s. That record skip and beat boxy sound was super popular. I know its a little earlier but take Toe Jam n Earl for example.
