*James is a Sneaky Shrink Again* In episode 2009 (replying to Annie’s “Two Villains” thread) and episode 2023, I wrote about how Sheila had reduced James to a feral state and I said that he needed to get back into the realm of psychology and civility so that he could manipulate her. And we are seeing that play out, first with Sheila nursing and feeding James, then seducing him, and now she has moved him out of the dungeon and into a more comfortable spot. Indeed the structure of the house symbolizes the movement between Freud’s structural model of the psyche. Houdini’s dungeon - dark and hidden and below ground - was a manifestation of Sheila’s id. And now that James is in the living room, still shackled but above ground and close to the door, it’s like he has climbed his way out of Sheila’s subconscious and is working around her ego and superego. Now that he has been restored to the realm of psychology, James’ powers have returned and so he is able to manipulate Sheila (she is falling in love with him) and Mike (his jealousy makes him almost want to expose Sheila). James is trying to divide and conquer, to drive a wedge between Sheila and Mike, so he can finally escape through that front door. And James is even _enjoying_ his tormenting and manipulation of Mike, like he’s finally getting to be a sneaky shrink again and he loves it.
@annieo6527 Жыл бұрын
I love it! In terms of psychological models, the dungeon as a representation of the id and the living room as the ego/superego is a nice metaphor. Maslow's hierarchy of needs might be another useful model, with the dungeon representing the basic needs and James working his way up the hierarchy, from getting water and food, to giving Sheila affection, to achieving his ultimate goal of defeating her.
@NewYorkNick0607 Жыл бұрын
@@annieo6527 YES to Maslow's hierarchy! 👍 And what's funny is when Stephanie gets involved in this storyline again (and basically figures the whole thing out), she will inadvertently knock James back down to that feral state with Sheila shoving him back underground and James looking disheveled in a wife-beater and having to resort to survival mode again (struggling over a knife).

*Taylor Leaving is a Redo of Brooke Leaving (Spoilers!)* Taylor heading to the airport to leave town but then changing her mind is a Redo of when Brooke was at the airport preparing to leave town but then changed her mind (in episodes 1360 and 1361). In both cases an ally reports that the woman is leaving (Sheila reports to Stephanie/Connor reports to Brooke) and in both cases a scene with Ridge serves as the climactic turn in the story (Taylor will show up at Ridge’s doorstep/Ridge shows up at the airport to stop Brooke from leaving). Once again we see that Taylor and Brooke have switched roles: Taylor is now “the other woman” whose presence threatens the stability of a marriage and Brooke is “the wife” who is hoping she will leave town. The comparison shows how much better the prior scenario (Bill Bell’s scenario) was - and not just because Taylor and Brooke were playing their assigned roles. In the earlier storyline, Stephanie was the one pushing for Brooke to leave and getting updates on her movements so the battle was really between Stephanie and Brooke (the stronger rivalry) with Taylor as a mere proxy for that feud. But this time Brooke is pushing for Taylor to leave (Stephanie is more ambivalent and sidelined) so the battle is now between _Taylor and Brooke_ and that’s a much less dynamic and interesting feud. Also in the prior example, Ridge was the catalyst for Brooke changing her mind but this time there’s no catalyst and Taylor just ends up looking flighty. Furthermore, the two scenarios also show the difference between _suspense_ and _surprise._ In Bill Bell’s version he opted for suspense. The question of whether and when Ridge would show up to stop Brooke from leaving was always hanging over the proceedings - with Brooke even expecting him at the condo - and that gave the scenes a sustained charge. But in Brad Bell’s version, he opts for surprise. He wants to fake-out the viewer and in order to do that, he has to convince us along with the characters that Taylor is really leaving so we can’t get inside her head or see when and why she changes her mind. We get the shock of her appearing at Ridge’s doorstep but the scenes leading up to it aren’t compelling. Thus what we have is a redo that is worse than the original - with characters not acting like themselves, a weaker rivalry, and surprise over suspense.
@NewYorkNick0607 Жыл бұрын
Alfred Hitchcock himself explained the difference between suspense and surprise (he prefers the former). Here is his famous explanation: *“We are now having a very innocent little chat. Let's suppose that there is a bomb underneath this table between us. Nothing happens, and then all of a sudden, "Boom!" There is an explosion. The public is surprised, but prior to this surprise, it has seen an absolutely ordinary scene, of no special consequence. Now, let us take a suspense situation. The bomb is underneath the table and the public knows it, probably because they have seen the anarchist place it there. The public is aware the bomb is going to explode at one o'clock and there is a clock in the decor. The public can see that it is a quarter to one. In these conditions, the same innocuous conversation becomes fascinating because the public is participating in the scene. The audience is longing to warn the characters on the screen: "You shouldn't be talking about such trivial matters. There is a bomb beneath you and it is about to explode!"* *In the first case we have given the public fifteen seconds of surprise at the moment of the explosion. In the second we have provided them with fifteen minutes of suspense. The conclusion is that whenever possible the public must be informed. Except when the surprise is a twist, that is, when the unexpected ending is, in itself, the highlight of the story.”*
@TriniT21 Жыл бұрын
Spot on... That's exactly it.. Suspense vs surprise. 🎯 You are also correct that we don't get allowed the benefit of what's actually going on in Taylor's head (we haven't for a while now.. Her thoughts have been as murky as that dungeon James has been tied up in). But upon Brooke's return, we got her thoughts exactly as she plotted her next move to snag Ridge, so we were also left suspenseful as to how, exactly, she would carry out her plan.

Absolutely! I have said something similar before, how it is really a misconception to see Brooke as a romantic heroine, because her main focus is not winning the man but defeating the female rival. The blunt and almost mocking way Connor calls out Taylor's staying/leaving flip-flopping is a great example of how much damage this storyline did to the character. The pre-Casablanca Taylor was a wonderful character known for her integrity, stability, decisiveness, being levelheaded and a rational thinker, highly intelligent, grounded, etc. Now she's been reduced to a ditz who floating through the world without any control or direction.
