On the other hand, if Taylor _wasn't_ in Morocco but in LA, that would be an even more urgent reason for Brooke to tell Ridge about Taylor (before Taylor had a chance to control the narrative). This is also what Taylor should have foreseen - Omar being in LA meant that she was actually in a _hurry_ to tell Ridge about him, and she missed her chance.

*Stephanie Defends Brooke’s Character: “I’m Impressed.”* Stephanie praising Brooke this way is an old Bill Bell writing trick that I call “character defense” where a character with moral authority testifies on behalf of another character who has done something questionable, thus giving the audience permission to keep rooting for that character. I wrote about this in episode 1125, when Taylor defended Stephanie’s character to Blake, after Stephanie had forged the letter from Eric. Stephanie’ actions had crossed a line and could’ve alienated the viewer from her. But Bill Bell didn’t want her to be seen as a villain so he used Taylor to reassure the viewer that Stephanie was still a woman you could root for. Taylor took the floor and gave a lengthy tribute to Stephanie - describing her strength and resilience, declaring her motives relatable, and even calling Stephanie “a role model” (episode 1124 at the 15 minute mark). As a therapist, a Good Girl, and a victim of the letter scheme, Taylor had the “moral authority” to exonerate Stephanie. Now this time we have Brooke keeping a major secret from her husband, an act that threatens her attempt to become the Good Wife. Brad Bell wants Brooke to remain viable as a romantic heroine but he also didn’t want Ridge to find out about Taylor from Brooke because that’s not as dramatic as a big reveal. So instead he contrives this situation where Brooke decides (too late) to be open and honest with Ridge and he uses Stephanie to deem that decision “impressive.” Stephanie’s role is important here because the viewer may not want to give Brooke much credit after seeing her repeatedly berate Taylor to leave town. By admitting that she herself would’ve struggled with this, Stephanie is encouraging the viewer to admire Brooke’s decision nevertheless. As Brooke’s arch nemesis, the family matriarch, and the arbiter of Ridge’s wives, Stephanie has the “moral authority” to exonerate Brooke.

I love this idea of "character defense"! And it also works in a more formalized way when Brooke and Taylor go to court to determine which of them is Ridge's "true wife". At that point, both Brooke and Taylor have done questionable things so that there is no clear "desired outcome" in terms of storytelling - neither one of them is clearly deserving of winning. And even Stephanie's moral authority can't be used since it is not unbiased (Stephanie herself having kept the secret of Taylor being alive). So instead, we get a judge to speak as a representative of the "rules of the universe", or a kind of referee, to sort things out and let us know who is, objectively, Ridge's wife. This serves two purposes - to establish that the first marriage vows invalidate any future vows, thus freeing Taylor from the burden of her commitment to Omar, and to add value to Ridge ultimately choosing Brooke, by making this an active rather than a passive choice.

The Steph /Brooke scene also emphasises a point we've been making : Timing is everything. She says to Brooke that Ridge's reaction would be a lot better than if she had waited a year. Same can be said of Taylor, who did wait a year and hasn't gotten the reaction that she might have gotten a year ago (well, as much reaction that Ridge could muster)

...and Taylor never lies... It's also sad that Taylor was SENT away by Stephanie and Brooke. The woman has choice abilities, and she chose to stay. That was a mess, too. I'm not an Omar fan at all, but it was quite hurtful of Taylor to call him and tell him she was coming back (to the man that held her captive, lied to her about her identity, tortured her with the Honeymoon spy room to watch Ridge and Brooke, etc ) and then he let the children know she was coming. That's the biggest collateral damage. Why would she even consider going back to him?

It’s so dumb of Ridge not to have recognized Taylor’s eyes and presence when he was in Morocco. And now, hearing this from Omar the clues continue to allude him. But, the worm of doubt is now there. Bell’s writing makes Ridge out to be pretty dense. Of course, he chooses The B over Taylor so that reinforces his poor judgement. And, this alliance between Stephanie and Brooke is unsettling. They are much better as adversaries. Bell is preparing the viewer for another reason why Brooke should “win”. She’s thinking of the damage a secret could do to her marriage. She shows some vulnerability expressing her insecurity and being “afraid”. It heartbreaking to see the fall Taylor is about to take. The end is coming. 😢

Ridge today already couldn't connect the dots, when Omar started with his story about _a year ago someone came into my life. A woman she had been found unconscious victim of a vicious attack and she remained in coma for many weeks but by the grace of God and the excellent care of my personal physician she recovered_ . So Taylor and Laila just coincidentally have the same story? Getting attacked and being in a coma is supposedly a regular occurrence in Morocco?

I'm watching now and I have to stop and say that Stephanie is so detached from Taylor and it's s unbearable for me. I know that Stephanie requires some kind of features in a woman, and apparently Taylor doesn't fit in them for now. But she is so harsh. She loved her as her own daughter. The writing at the moment is all over the place and frustaring and not really catering to the true character trades and to the developed relationships since season 1. Yeah Omar's mixing the truth with lies by omission (not mentioning that he kept Taylor from revealing she was alive before the wedding) and lies by suggestion (making Ridge think that he and Taylor consummated the marriage). It's actually good for Taylor that Omar overplays his hand like this because while Ridge will feel betrayed and lied to by her, once he finds out Omar also exaggerated and tried to deceive him, it will make Taylor look better.

This actually does seem like a moment of growth on Brooke's part. In terms of archetypes, I think from this point on and throughout 1996, Brooke is a kind of Good Girl (culminating in that moment when she _turns down Ridge's marriage proposal because she wants to focus on her children,_ in a complete reversal of her priorities up until that point). Brooke in this role is sometimes an uncomfortable fit, but it is so consistently hinted at during this time that it would be misleading not to acknowledge it at all. This also has to do with the show placing Lauren Fenmore in the role that was previously Brooke's.

@@annieo6527 Yes it shows some growth and I agree with your other post that it's an attempt to "earn" Brooke her happy ending through sacrifice, but I wouldn't go overboard. Like you said, the Good Girl role is an uncomfortable fit for Brooke. She still berated Taylor to leave town, kept this a secret from Ridge for weeks, and was complicit in the "volunteer" deception. Also while it _seems_ like she's doing something selfless and without being strong-armed, there is still a coercive element with Brooke fearing that Taylor WILL come back one day or that Ridge will find out about her. She also can't trust Stephanie completely either! Yes it's a good that she has that foresight to deal with the problem now, but if Brooke could be certain that Taylor would never come back, and if Stephanie didn't know about it, _would she_ still tell Ridge? I'm not so sure.

@@NewYorkNick0607 I absolutely agree and when I am talking about Brooke's "Good Girl era", I am also doing it in light of the 1996 episodes I'm currently watching where it is even more clear that this is where they are going with the character. But I agree that there never ceases to be a kind of "friction" in the Good Girl version of Brooke. It is rare for her to be entirely non-manipulative (1996 actually being the exception). But I think the point where we are now is as "reversed" as Taylor's and Brooke's roles will ever be. Brooke is approaching "Good Girl-ness" while Taylor is at her furthest from her Good Girl archetype (not counting post 2002 B&B), to the point where at this exact moment, Brooke actually has a (slight) moral upper hand compared to Taylor, earning her Ridge at the end of this storyline. And although Brooke will become even more "Good" in the year to come, _so will Taylor,_ to the point where in the spring of 1996, they are _both_ "Good Girls".

Stephanie in that SL is kinda written confusing. We had Stephanie so often bringing up to Brooke how nothing is really resolved, how Taylor can come back at any time, is just a call away today's episode) .... - then we had Stephanie just the episode yesterday (ep 2046) telling James that Stephanie doesn't want Ridge to know about Taylor being alive because nothing positive will come out of it ...- and then we have Stephanie today acting surprised and impressed that Brooke now wants to tell Ridge that Taylor is alive. And yes, even when Brooke asked her today on whose side Stephanie would be on if Taylor returned, Stephanie just replied _That's a good question_ Stephanie has reacted emotionally when she encouraged Taylor to leave, feeling betrayed and disappointed (Jack, If Taylor really had loved Ridge that much, she wouldn't have left. James, Taylor is confused and I have told her to return to her husband), but still we had Stephanie at the same time holding the door open, even today not willing to tell Brooke that she will support Brooke's side IF Taylor returns.
