*Sheila’s “Death” and Sacrifice* We all know Sheila will return but the staging of what could’ve been her end here is interesting. First I’m glad to see that her relationship with Lauren is centered again. Unlike incompetent James, Lauren manages to psycho-analyze Sheila (“self-love”) in a way that really gets to her and gets her to drop the gun. Then Lauren figures out Sheila’s intention to drink poison and says, “Don’t do it!” Is this compassion from Lauren? Sheila seems skeptical (“as if you care”) and the viewer should be too given their history and the fact that Lauren just listed all the terrible things Sheila did to her. So what’s going on here? I’ve written before how Lauren seems to enjoy her feud with Sheila and takes pleasure in trying to upstage her (see episodes 1532 and 1662) - if Sheila ends her life, then Lauren doesn’t have that anymore. And there’s another element too. Sheila’s “death” can be seen as a sacrifice _in a storytelling sense_ where the writer uses a death to redeem a character. Scott’s death in Catalina operated this way (and Sheila called it a sacrifice) as his dying wish prevented Lauren from exposing Sheila and gave her another chance with Eric (see episode 1671). Such sacrifices always have Biblical allusions and Scott dying for Sheila’s sins was Christ-like. And now here we have Sheila, like Christ himself, dying only to be resurrected later (there’s even a Barabbas figure in Thorne, set free by the plot before the big sacrifice). Note all the redemptive elements: Sheila asks for and receives Eric’s forgiveness (from the patriarch like “Father, Forgive them”), she drops the gun and recognizes the goodness in her enemies, and then reveals a pure motive of reciprocal love. And the end of the episode is mournful - not the send-off for an unrepentant villain. There’s a sense that Sheila has been redeemed and perhaps _this_ is what Lauren was trying to avoid. She didn’t want Sheila to have the glory and redemption of a sacrificial death. She wants Sheila behind bars. And indeed when Sheila returns, she won’t spend a lifetime in prison like she should for her crimes, so it’s as if the slate has been wiped clean here, her sins “forgiven” by the writer. But how can sacrificing Sheila only redeem Sheila? Christ’s resurrection didn’t only save himself. Ah, but I would argue Sheila’s sacrifice also benefits _another_ character, one with whom she has been closely and narratively aligned: her friend Brooke. In episode 1671, I wrote how Brooke was redeemed by Caroline’s death and in episode 1921, I wrote how Brooke and Sheila are often on similar story trajectories. Now Brooke is being redeemed again, this time by the “end” of Sheila’s story and thus the removal of a character who did bad things on Brooke’s behalf that Brooke couldn’t do (like tampering with Bridget’s paternity). Note how saintly Brooke is portrayed here: Sheila identifies Brooke as the only one of the group who was kind to her, Brooke tries to martyr herself for Stephanie, and after Sheila dismisses Lauren’s “compassion” it’s Brooke’s, “I care Sheila, don’t do it!” that seems genuine. *Annie* has informed us that Brooke will become a Good Girl for a good year after this and in that case, this may have been the turn for her character. Brooke gets to be pure and good in this scene so she’s redeemed by Sheila’s sacrifice and indeed when Sheila returns, much of her initial storyline will be doing everything she can _for_ Brooke. To complete the Biblical allegory: just like the sinful woman who washes Jesus’ feet and is sanctified in Scripture, Brooke becomes a Good Girl in the Script at Sheila’s goodbye party.
@TriniT2111 ай бұрын
I find it hard to believe Brooke as the "Good Girl",try as the writers might lol. But as usual this is a great analysis 👌🏽👌🏽 I've always said Sheila is the crazy, over the top version of Brooke, who could do the crazy things Brooke couldn't legitimately do. Brooke can only have leeway up to a certain level.
@jasesherman762911 ай бұрын
Brilliant analysis of how a death can be used in fiction as ceremonial redemption. Love the Biblical allusions like Thorne/Barabbas! And yes they really lay it on thick here to make Brooke look good. She gets to demonstrate traits we've never seen from her (kindness, compassion and selflessness). The funny thing is, some of Sheila's sins that Lauren listed are also true for Brooke.
@NewYorkNick060711 ай бұрын
@@TriniT21 Thanks *Trish* and *Jase.* Brooke exhibiting goodness in this scene feels like a turning point for her character. Like you said Trish, Sheila represents the darkest side of Brooke. The cops have focused too much on the blue mustang and Jessica and Dylan. But it is strange that *Jessica* didn't enter the house to tell everyone about the mixup and how Dylan and Jessica had had cops pointing guns at them and had handcuffed them.

I would have like for once see Eric really facing the consequences of his doings and actions. Here would have been a great opportunity to have him face the fact, he is the one that married Sheila, put his and others life at risk and with his actions alignated her. Sheila should have been mad with only one person in this room and try to kill that person and that is Eric. None of those other owes Sheila anything. Only Eric. He is the one who made Sheilas life and their marriage difficult (plus she herselfhad responsiblity for it as well). He is the one that owes his wife a better treatment and loyalty. He was the husband from hell (like he is for everyone of his wives). Nobody else in this room has any oblications to Sheila, only Eric.

The acting choice of SF is interesting or maybe she following the Script. No real move in her face or physically. As if she lets Stephanie appear in disbelief or unfaced or like she already knowing this is "fake and Sheila is just escaping like this".

I know many would not like what I'm going to say. I find SF not so involved in these scese, yesteday and today, even if I understand the fact that Sheila hates Stephanie the most, and Not Eric (who knows how to be invisible) and her life is at stake here. Usually she is great even when she doesn't say anything. Probaly the script was focused on Sheila, but the other characters had more involvement than her.

They've been under writing for Steph for a while now... Sheila's last act should have been a scene between her and Steph alone.
@andream599811 ай бұрын
I wrote something similar. Yesterday lack of face by Sheilas berating her , I get and I like. But today, her lack of reaction at anything is interesting and I don't know if it was a choice of Susan or in the Script, to let Stephanie appear completely unfaced with anything that goes on. Maybe she letted others have the floor here and step back or the script was lackluster and she didn't care. I could imagine all of it or it is a acting choice, to let Stephanie not belief in Sheilas crys and analysing if it is an escape plan.

First time I'm seeing this goodbye party in full length. I'm bored. I'm not impressed. Its not that interesting. Glad, Sheila is gone for awhile. I know I'm propably in the minority, but never cared for Sheila or Lauren. They both getting already on my nerves like Brooke does constantly.
@TriniT2111 ай бұрын
I made a comment in an earlier epi that the Sheila farewell party was anti climactic to me. I actually like the Sheila character.. I think BB needed an actual evil villain and Sheila was a good one. However, the scene ended up falling flat... Compared to, for eg, Sheila holding Lauren and her mother in the farmhouse on YR. The writers dragged out Sheila holding James in a dungeon for far too long, esp since James is such a non entity character that neither the characters nor we the viewers missed his presence when he was not on screen. Now it feels like the writers are rushing the end of Sheila bc they took too long and made that story too ridiculous.

The Jessica, Dylan mustang scene. The car parked surrounded by potted plants on the CBS stage. Remember in the old days when we actually had realism? Shots taken outside. They could have made this a little less laughable.
@napomotshumi890511 ай бұрын
Dang! How stupid can those police people be?! As if Dylan and Jessica have had enough with them in that statutory rape case, when Sheila is the real suspect holding the Forresters hostage. And Thorne is on the run to Mexico trying to save Macy from Anthony. If you ask me, some laws must deal with teaching civil defense forces in our countries proper vigilance into people whose innocent and guilty with reason before taking actions of arrest.

No. One of the early seasons had to stretch through to September to align with the current season structure beginning sometime in September each year, so it would appear Season 8 will be the super long one, going to about 370ish episodes.

@@marcopoll-o Based on how they originally categorised the start of each season, shouldn't it follow the original order?

@@PaisaEsteban at some point they changed the season start time to align with the general season starts in broader TV in the US, so this must be when it happened. New seasons start during September each year and have done so for nearly 30 years of B&B.

@marcopoll-o I believe this change happened about 5 years ago or so, as I remember an announcement that both Y&R and B&B would have their new seasons commence in September. Given that it didn't happen in the 90s, I thought they would have stuck to the original format.
