This episode showed interesting use of two B&B thematic tools - color and theology. When Brooke is trying to persuade Ridge, she tells him their “special connection” is a gift from God. I snorted out loud and thought, “she’s more like the devil.” Then I noticed something interesting: the light in the steam room is clearly colored red, a color associated in classical Western theology and culture with the devil. It’s not just a tinge, either; the color is a stark scarlet. This theme continues nicely in the scene between Sally, Clark, and Thorne, in which Sally tells Thorne that if you make a deal with the devil (referring to Brooke), you usually pay the price. Performer of the day was once again, for me, the fantastic Darlene Connelly. As some of us have previously noted, the character of Sally Spectra can be such an over-the-top tour de force that it’s easy to forget what a talented, dramatic actress she is. In fact, I think it is in her sad and angry scenes, that we see the best of Sally. In today’s episode, we really saw this. It would’ve been so easy to seem larger than life and vengeful when talking to Thorne. Instead, she actually seemed almost regretful for him, while of course being sorrowful that her beloved Macy really did get killed for nothing. I think a lesser actress would have just gone all in on the vengeance and schadenfreude angle, but this way was somehow much more effective.

Great post! I love your observations about the way Brooke is portrayed as a "diabolical" character in this episode - this is as close as Brooke has ever come to being an outright villain. And there is a nice symmetry between Brooke in the steam room trying to tempt Ridge the exact same way she did in the steam room with Thorne a year earlier, and her using the same lines on Taylor that she used to make Macy feel insecure about her marriage, while Thorne is at the Insomnia narrating how he now finally sees through the exact strategies that we are seeing play out in real time at Forrester Creations. I agree with you about Darlene Conley's performance and the way that scene was written - her grief when finding out that Macy died for nothing is so much more effective and nuanced than any display of schadenfreude could ever have been. What Thorne tells her really makes Macy's suffering and death even more tragic and painful for Sally because it shows that it was all _completely unnecessary,_ and could have been avoided entirely if Thorne had only realized then what he realizes now. Thorne now knowing and acknowledging that Macy was right all along is too little, too late, and reduces the tragedy to "oops, I happened to break Macy's heart and cause her death, how siIIy of me".
