The fact that Brooke is still insisting she's going to marry James proves that she is just playing out a romantic fantasy. No one could possibly believe she still wants James after she called off the elopement, not even Brooke can believe that. She's just playing out this storyline string to the end. What Brooke wants is to be the heroine of a romantic fantasy where Ridge swoops in and sweeps her off her feet. She wants Ridge to steal her away from James and to make all the declarations of love she has been longing for hear for "seven long years." So now she's stalling to give Ridge time to do that. As I wrote in episode 1831, "James is trying to hurry the plot along and write the ending where he marries Brooke and she's trying to stall the plot and write the real romantic ending she's wanted all along."

*CONNOR:* "I _was_ Warwick!" (8:40) Connor is voicing here a point I've made before: that he and James occupy the same functions in the show and so the arrival of James crowded out Connor's role. Think about it: before James came on the scene, Connor was the romantic rival to BRIDGE (with actual chemistry with Brooke and a believable feud with Ridge), who was also becoming friendly with Taylor, who was suspicious of Sheila, and who had these frenemy scenes with Stephanie where you could tell there was respect slowly growing between them. But once they brought Ian Buchanan on, they tried to put JAMES in all those roles and that made Connor unnecessary. It's a real shame because Scott Thompson Baker is a better actor with actual leading man charisma. If Connor was in this triangle with Ridge & Brooke instead, you could believe that she was genuinely torn between both men and might choose Connor over Ridge.

I see your point, and I think that partially James and Connor do overlap in terms of plot function. But I still don't see them as at all the same character type, and even though they sometimes occupy the same space, their reasons for doing so, and the energy they convey, are very different. Take their relationship with Brooke, for example. They are both hopeful suitors who can't compete with Brooke's obsession with Ridge. But the similarities don't actually go much deeper than that. Connor comes into the relationship with Brooke with _something to offer,_ while James is clearly the novice in the relationship and has very little to offer Brooke that she might actually want. So Connor is confident in the relationship and when he realizes he can't have Brooke, he promptly moves on to another woman. Also their relationships with Sheila are very different. Connor was suspicious of Sheila for what appeared to be "competitive" reasons - they were both competing for the role of being that little influential voice in Brooke's ear. James has a _professional_ interest in Sheila but he is not really in a _power struggle_ with her. Connor is a very level-headed character (for the most part) with virtually no personal issues, while James is not nearly as "together" and comes across as socially awkward. Connor is also a considerably more active character than James, who usually doesn't seem to actually *do* anything.

@@annieo6527 ITA with all of that Annie. The story positions are the same but the character types aren't. And it's true they have totally different vibes: James is a darker/intellectual type who is comfortable in high society whereas Connor is an ex-jock alpha type with a lot of class resentment. But I still think you can't have two characters, even different characters, in the same positions without one of them becoming irrelevant. And James has made Connor irrelevant. It's similar to how Taylor was elevated to Ridge's love interest to fill the role that was left by Caroline (princess type/antagonist to Brooke/preferred by Stephanie) even though the characters of Caroline and Taylor are different. And once Taylor assumed that role, there was no "space" for Caroline which is why the attempt to bring her back via Faith/Karen fell flat.

Yeah I have to say I agree with this and not just because I find Connor to be extremely handsome but because I’ve seen Scott Thompson Baker in other shows and he always nailed it. I actually liked him as Colton in General Hospital before B&B and he was always spot on in conveying the character. I can’t buy the idea of Brooke with James anyway. Connor was already in that role of being Ridge’s rival for Brooke, so I’m not sure why they entered James on the scene. Makes no sense. Connor is more believable as a rival to Ridge for Brooke’s heart.

*B&B's Patented Anticlimactic Climax* Ridge's marriage-scuppering scene highlights a classic B&B storytelling technique. If this were a Jane Austen novel, Ridge might have made a dramatic declaration of love, and surprised everyone by presenting Brooke with a proposal and a choice: to marry James or him. This would have put Brooke in the driver's seat (instead of always being the other woman in a triangle with Ridge), and deliver an explosively dramatic scene. But instead, he simply convinces her that she *thinks* she's in the driver's seat by discouraging her from marrying James, when really he has made the decision for her. The anticlimax is B&B's style, because then it can take several more days or weeks to tell a story in a more dull way (involving several days/weeks of postmortems between various characters), rather than giving us the explosive drama we crave. (I realise of course that they're setting up the PDR proposal, to give Brooke and Ridge their moment, but I would still have preferred the first option.)

Fantastic analysis! 👍You're so right that B&B often has this problem with their climaxes. It's a classic/leftover Bill Bell trick to cover more time and let several storytelling beats play out but when it's applied to a climax like this (turning it into an anticlimax as you say) it can feel unsatisfying or deny the viewer the explosion they want to see. It happens on Y&R too. And ITA with your point about Ridge being in the driver's seat (I made a similar point in episode 1833 about Ridge taking control of Brooke romantic fantasy plot away from her).

The first thing I said about Ridge showing up to bust up the wedding plans was.. Ridge offered nothing. He didn't tell her he loves her.. He didn't bring a ring and offer her am engagement (I'm sure he has several rings in his drawer at home).. He didnt do anything except tell her not to marry James for the flimsiest of reasons, none of which should have made Brooke pause for a second. The problem with Brooke is that she wants to be the damsel in the middle of a big romance by Ridge so badly, that she will take next to nothing and make that into the beginning of her fairytale. If all it took was Ridge showing up to tell her not to marry someone else, while not offering an alternative on the spot, then she really deserves all the unhappiness she is about to get into for years to come. Bc she could have avoided it.

I don't like Connor much because I think he can be arrogant and rarely self-serving. However, I believe he is %100 right when it comes to Ridge. This is a perfect example of this. Ridge ONLY wants Brooke when he feels she's slipping away. I just don't get why James would buy Stephanie's logic that being married quickly would end the issue. A marriage did not keep Brooke from betraying her husband with Ridge, nor did it keep Ridge from going after his father's wife. James knows that Brooke had been married to Eric and he knows that Ridge is Bridget's father. The doctor should be able to do the math and how Bridget had been conceived in 1992, when BERIC only got divorced in 1993 (after the paternity test), if neither Taylor nor Brooke have told him the details yet.

I love Connor. I don’t think he’s any more arrogant than anyone else on the show. Eric and Ridge exhibit arrogance that hits the highest number on the Richterscale… and he’s 100% right about Ridge. And he would know given their history & rivalry at high school. I love the way Connor constantly calls out Ridge’s stupidity and arrogant behaviour. It’s a pity Brooke never listened to Connor or anyone else about Ridge for that matter.
