I'm in the same boat as Carson. Originally I read the manga when I was a teenager and now watching this reaction I notice way more of the social commentary. That's part of the fun of reactions, getting to see a new side of a story you already experienced.

2:01 No, theft is just that big a deal in Japan. And it certainly doesn't help that in Japan, it's not innocent until proven guilty, like it is in America. It's guilty until proven innocent. The burden of proof, the onus of supplying evidence, rests entirely on the head of the so-called criminal in the VAST MAJORITY of their cases, even for something as small as supposedly stealing a chocolate bar. To the point where, in America, a cop would ask the shop owner "let me see the security cam footage," while in Japan the shopkeep would say "You have my word, so the footage doesn't matter." The only time the footage would even come up is if a customer called the cops on the shopkeep. It's complete bullshit, but that's also why Japan has the highest percentage of "successful" criminal court cases. Hell, the overall story of this anime (which I don't mind spoiling since this is 9 months old) is a perfect example: The cops only looked hard enough to find the first suspect who had the least standing in society. Yuuki delivers produce and foodstuff to markets, the schools, etc alongside his family from 4 am until noon, and then plays with airplanes all afternoon. To every housewife and office worker in the town he looks like a no-good jobless delinquent because they only see him in the afternoon, they don't see the hard work he puts in every morning. So all it takes is some planted CP in his bedroom and the same brand of boots that he uses to see him declared 100% guilty. Strange how he acted exactly like that other weirdo serial kid-killer two towns over from six months ago, but that's not important. Just like no one will think twice when, in six months, another three kids go missing two more towns over, under extremely similar circumstances. They'll just find the suspect with the worst social presence and convict them. There was one rather infamous case IRL where a Japanese politician or businessman killed someone, and then killed and staged their secretary's suicide to shift the blame to the now-dead secretary. It took years for the truth to come out, and by that time nobody cared that the guy had committed the crime, because the case was "already solved."

Looks like Japan is completely fucked up and not at all that "safe" as it presents itself. I wonder how many crimes were put under cover there and how many reportedly "resolved" crimes were actually resolved.
