Amongst the wealth of excellence in this episode, one of my favourites is in the details: After the explosion, Vander looks at his boys and Vi and sees none of them are moving - apparently dead - he's completely defeated. Vi moves - he glances back at his boys with forlorn hope, but now he has at least one thing to live for and strains against the weight on his back. It's just a few seconds, but there is storytelling in every frame.

at 20:23, the reason fire came out was actually because of a backdraft(i think), when fire comes rushing out due to little to no ventilation when a rush of oxygen suddenly comes in (him busting through the wall), causing combustion to restart.
@PBRatLord
@PBRatLord 9 ай бұрын
That is a good guess! But backdrafts cannot occur from something like that, they rely on a massive influx of oxygen into an area which is smoldering/choked. Think a broken window or kicking down a door into a well-sealed room, anything that requires an HVAC system for ventilation, really, becomes a hazardous open under the wrong conditions. The building itself was shown to be old and decrepit with plenty of holes (not to mention the sheer size of the warehouse), so the likelihood of a fire with that much oxygen to burn becoming starved in such a short time is also unlikely (the hole was also opened by Powder's explosion via the door, which came to rest on Vi, so there would already be an oxygen flow from the hole well before the boom). If you listen closely to the scene once more, you can hear rattling very similar to the way steam pipes begin jumping just prior to an explosion, but as the building is old and likely without a functioning boiler, I believe it to be the distillery they are using to manufacture the drug which causes the secondary explosion. Hope you enjoyed the quick facts, Fire Marshall Rat signin' out!

Arcane is another show that exemplifies the three episode rule. Of don't put it down until the third episode. Even though Arcane's first two episodes are already incredible it still gets better in the third episode.
@SiMeGamer
@SiMeGamer 9 ай бұрын
No show should require you to watch more than the first episode to enjoy it. If you drop a show after a single episode or even partially through the first episode that's totally fine. If the show runners fail to interest you, they failed, and the odds for future interest are extremely low. Most shows that suck also have a shitty first episode and upon analysis the writing is on the fking wall. There are very few shows throughout history that are actually good despite having a bad start. Plenty of great shows that get even better after an already good first episode. Statistically it's better to drop a show that starts bad and then checking reviews to see if perhaps you missed out on an unlucky masterpiece. The result is almost never positive and saving your time is great. Reviewers and critics are exempt from this because they are the people that help us make those decisions. For example, I see myself as a reviewer of a particular medium (manga/Japanese comics) so I ignore everyone's opinions and just consume whatever random series I get my hands on. Most of it is crap, btw. But since I see myself as a reviewer of that medium, I allow myself to struggle through a terrible series. So far only 1 story managed to get really good for me and it took 15 volumes to almost instantly jump from a 2/10 to an 8/10. I still don't recommend the series because fk that, but it was an interesting experience. Don't waste time on crap. Unless you.got it recommended from a reputable friend that has taste you agree with, make the most out of your life and show these directors and producers that making a good start to a show matters.
@Eskimo615
@Eskimo615 9 ай бұрын
@@SiMeGamer That is a very narrow view. There are lots of reasons why something might take a few episodes to really get going and "its a bad show" is just one of them. Lots of people don't care for a show until they properly spend some time in the show regardless of quality. This is a very common experience that happens to most people every so often. Some people enjoy a slow burn start to a show or book and there is nothing wrong with that. Just because you aren't one of the people who enjoys that type of thing doesn't mean you can't enjoy shows like that. Thus why the rule exists.
@SiMeGamer
@SiMeGamer 9 ай бұрын
@@Eskimo615 it's unfair to compare "slow burn" and bad start. Plenty of great media have slow starts. But they are still well crafted and are supremely interesting. Good character writing can happen with 2 characters sitting in a room for 3 hours of runtime. If you are a good script writer and a good director, you could make it good. If nothing happens or stuff happens that we don't give a fk about, then it's a waste of our time. Sitcoms are one of the prime examples of making good and bad episodes. But pretty much all of them without exclusion have very strong starts. Great hooks and good direction. Some of them falter early and some falter late (I have yet to see one that doesn't drag by the end) but they all have a good start so you have a reason to keep watching. Why the fk should I watch something that isn't good from the get-go? And, btw, I know plenty of people who watch anything and everything. Those people don't count imo because they don't view their media critically. They are watching to burn time and quench boredom. Not to experience art (which can always be both if done well). I take my media seriously even if it's just to chill. If a show is boring on a first episode or if a movie is super boring in the first 15-20 minutes, I'd rather not waste my time on it. When people don't give a fk about the quality of their media is when you get sht media. When people fail to understand that The Force Awakens is a horrendous film and then garbage like The Last Jedi makes billions, it's a problem. How much trash is out there that people consume because they refuse to apply a critical eye and develop any semblance of taste and standards? A lot. And as I said, if a show is good but is bad at the start, I'll hear about it. But instead of gambling, I just move on to something that is good. Overall I only gained value. Instead of sitting there and hoping for the best. Last I checked tons of shows have 40 minute episodes so watching 2 extra episodes means I'm often potentially wasting 80 minutes. And this adds up if we consume a lot of media. Even on KZbin you have features like watching at x2 speed. That's awesome. You can save time on stuff where you only need the information but leave it Normal for quality entertainment. All I'm saying is that judging a show by the first episode is good. More people should do it and drop stuff. Let others waste their time and figure it out. Let the critics and reviewers - people whose job is to consume and rate this crap spend time on it for us. We only have so much time to live on this planet. I'd rather not gamble it on a "maybe it gets good later". I've seen so many people dislike the first episode of Arcane, leave it and after they hear tons of incredible stuff about it, they came back. I was so happy every time that happened. While I think the first episode of Arcane is the weakest in the show, I still consider it incredible from a craft perspective. But if someone didn't like it, that's fine. And if they stopped watching because of that, that's amazing. More power to them. I respect these people so much more because they have standards and aren't willing to waste their time on a potential that may never come. Treat your time with respect. There is only so much of it and there is plenty of great media out there. If gambling is not your job (or something you are very willing to do and be disappointed in - like me with Japanese comics), then stop. It's unhealthy and promotes bad media.

@@aspieanarchist5439 I recommend watching MauLer's exhaustive review of the sequel Star Wars trilogy. I don't think you realize just how awful those movies are. Mainly from a writing perspective. The reviews of these movies are, to me, more entertaining than the movies themselves. I rewatch/relisten to them often despite one review spanning 4.5 hours and the second one still in production at over 10.5 hours already with one or two parts left yet to release. It explores media in general and provides so much media analysis. I think it is fantastic. And how you felt about the movies doesn't change what those movies were - horribly crafted. We have standards for writing. These movies don't meet those standards. Not even close. It isn't as bad as it is made out to be in popular discourse. It's worse. I really recommend checking out MauLer's 3-part and 6-part analysis series respectively on those movies and then follow it up with the "Unbridled Rage" or whatever it's called of the third film in the sequel trilogy. It's so, so, so fking bad. Regarding enjoyment of media - one of my favorite movies is the first Transformers directed by Michael Bay. It's what one would call a guilty pleasure. It has so many flaws, it's hard to imagine liking it. But I watched it first when I did not have a critical eye for media and today the charm of the movie trumps the craft of the writing for me. And I admit it to anyone who says it awful and I agree. But feelings are separate. Analysis provides the ability to separate what we feel about the craft to what is actually in the craft. And if the argument is "well, now you just enjoy media less" it is simply false. I enjoy poorer crafted media less and better crafted media more. I get a lot more joy from a masterpiece (like Arcane) than someone who casually consumes media. It's the trade off of more refined taste. Food critics usually enjoy casual street food less but when they eat something truly well done, they enjoy it a lot more than you and I. And these types of people are also the ones moving media forward. You don't get Arcane if people don't obsess over every little thing and can identify what objectively makes something look good or well written. As consumers we don't always have the capacity to ide tidy why we feel what we feel from media. Analysis helps understand the media and subsequently ourselves. TFA, TLJ and TROS are 3 horrendous movies. Objectively. You can enjoy them and that's fine. But they are awfully crafted and making that distinction is, imo, important to being a much better consumer of media. Find reputable critics that align with your tastes and wait for their opinion to drop before committing time and money.

To this day, I believe the writing for this series is among the best. Some call it "simple". I don't disagree. Pizza is "simple", too - The difference is in the execution. The characters and their connections, their paths and decisions, it's all gray. The writers mentioned one simple key element to base all their characters - "The Impossible Decisions". You'll see their human attempts to balance; life, loves, desires, survival and living. Yes, it's THAT deep - and incredibly fun. Enjoy!

somethings to know: knowing the lore and everything one thing this show doesnt portray well is how badly zaun(the undercity) have it, they are working slave wages, getting nothing, treated like shit, their air is poisonous, piltover is dumping all their toxic waste into the river flowing into zaun, hence silcos eye infection(furthering his hatred for piltover). also silco isnt the mad scientist, he just pays him, cause hes not a scientist himself.

Yeah, Silco`s a Chem-Baron descended from a rogue Piltovan mining family who turned to crime and industrialism to get by after Piltover imposed tariffs on Zaun to punish the Zaunites for being sympathetic towards mages and Yordles(That`s why he dresses and talks like a mix of a Zaunite and a Piltie).Silco`s accent is called a Tidewater accent, a lot of my dad`s ancestors probably sounded a lot like that.

Opening the wall was not an automatic escape, and they were high up. If they jumped for their lives they'd have likely been injured or captured. Silco is not a pushover. Also if he grabbed one of them as a hostage its not likely any of them would have wanted to escape. As you said even if they did jump they might have still gotten caught. What stopped the juiced guy from continuing to kick down the door was seeing the toy before it exploded. Buying them a few extra seconds to escape. In my opinion their escape was a complete toss up with or without Powder.

1% is still a chance and in this world they're used to be the underdogs so they're crafty. They actually created that chance while they're in Silco's trap, they didn't go down and improvised immediately. Powder just wasted all of that. I'm not questionning her intentions but the consequences are there, she changed the 1% to a net 0.

You can assess the situation one way or the other by looking at the factors on paper and saying it could go this way or that, but I think what really warrants consideration is the artistic intent, and it seems clear that the intent of the depiction is the heightened tragedy of the creators portraying these kids on the cusp of a successful rescue and escape, everyone getting away from the clutches of death, only for Powder to unknowingly snatch defeat from the jaws of victory.

hell yes! such an amazing show! I'm so glad you're picking up on all the important stuff. So many people are quick to blame Vi for leaving powder or powder for blowing everything up and i'm glad to see you can empathize with them and understand their points of view. Powder couldn't have known how badly destructive they are and since her creations haven't worked she put in a few too many of the crystals to make sure. also she didn't just chuck it at her family, she waited until they were behind a massive door. To her it looked like there was no other way out but the door because the room doesn't have any windows (as far as i can tell, i mean claggor straight up had to put a hole in the wall to get out) and that exit was getting bashed in by a giant mutated crazy person. you can't blame her for trying everything to save her family. and at the same time Vi is also just a kid who just had to watch her entire family die, killed by her sister. Sure it was wrong that she hit her and called her a Jinx but in such a terrible situation lashing out is just human, she noticed that quickly and took herself out of the situation to calm down and the moment she saw Silco approaching Powder she tried to come back. this show is just crazy about all the parallels, both across time/generations and sides. you both see the amazing potential of the crystals if put in the right hands as well as their danger and destructive power when put in the wrong ones. Powder also has a lot of symbolism with the crystals, because as we could see she had so much creative energy trying to make cool things and with the right means and a good teacher she could have become one of the most amazing inventors who truly could have changed things, but she's unstable and if handled wrong or when put under too much pressure she explodes, unleashing her horrible destructive side.

This really is just... the show where expectations go to die. All of the things that you expect from more traditional storytelling... yeah. Conventional storytelling isn't really a basis for what to expect here... it just sets you up for pain and sadness. One of the lines in this episode that I have, interestingly, come to resonate with is where Vander is asking Silco "For what? Pride?" When Silco snaps back "For respect!" it is easy to kind of... shrug and think "Sure, right. What's the difference?" I can tell you... as someone who has been through a time where within my own household I've been denied respect for my views, beliefs, and needs... respect is like air. Being deprived of it on such a systematic level can drive someone to incredible extremes. I never expected to understand where Silco was coming from about respect... but I'd be lying if I said I hadn't come to understand it through my own experiences. Still, this wouldn't be the last time that I related to one of the antagonists in this show, but I'll save that for when it comes up.

I forget almost everything that happens after this episode except a few moments that make me cringe. This is a very overrated series. I'm hoping Lindsay and Carson don't like it because that will validate my opinion. On the other hand I want their channel to do well and I think enjoying critically acclaimed shows will help with that. I feel similarly about One Piece, which is formulaic to the point it's unbearable. I'm conflicted guys.

I see mocking the "systemic issues" point raised in the previous episode reaction got me axed. I'll have to be more careful when disagreeing. I wonder if Boldcast takes unban requests or if I'm screwed.

I disagree about Arcane but I agree as a One Piece fan that the LA was really Overrated especially adaptation wise (Although it had more positives compared to others). Arcane was well written especially character wise it can't be less than an 8 imo.

@@dezaknar0 It's possible I'd like Arcane more on rewatch. I remember thinking a few character moments were contrived. And the last "big" memorable moment for me is the ending for episode 3.
