Bejart je koreografirao Bolero upravo za Dušanku Sifnios, jer mu ni jedna druga plesačica nije imala tako profinjen, a opet, tako ekspresivan rad ruku. I općenito, takav sugestivni plesni izričaj. Prvi put sam ovaj balet vidjela kao djevojčica na tv ekranu i ostala očarana. Dugo sam pokušavala ovdje pronaći snimku, ali, nažalost, ništa. No, svake sam godine otipkala Bolero Sifnios i bingo! U međuvremenu sam vidjela manje više sve moguće verzije i reinterpretacije Bejartova Bolera, ali... Dušanka Sifnios mi je bila i ostala nenadmašna. Hvala joj, a hvala i onome tko je stavio ovu snimku! Thanks!

Wow. Just wow. Some of the later dancers I've seen seem more precise and flexible (mind, I am no expert, but I am a musician who gets tired of hearing "perfect" performances that lack interest and passion). Duska blows past them in sheer expressive beauty: she is passionately, powerfully sensual. Exquisite. And the male dancers weren't just bodies, either. Kind of made me hot under the collar, lol. None of the other performances I have seen did that.

I think the issue is you're comparing performances from 60 years ago at a time when traveling was heavily restricted and very few dancers were able to move between countries. These early performances and customs are more distinctive and peculiar than the versions danced decades later after hundreds of iterations and changes in how people dance and how the music is played.. Dancing has became more athletic, precise and yes, homogeneous, as dancers train and move from company to company and perform all around the world.

Unsure how this piece of choreography is somehow 'an implied menace to women', as per a poster's comment below, is just lost on me! I've always considered Ravel's Bolero (well before I was introduced to Bejart's choreography) is this piece of music that held incredible romance and lust. And that it was a piece of music composed about the seduction of a man and a woman who become lovers! The men around her in the circle, are all the other men she encounters over her life who try to win over her love, or lust. There can be only one! The music is incredible and frankly the dance itself just leaves me breathless.

Rey Mohammed Ravel's Bolero is an iconic piece of music. One can interpret it in all manner of ways provided one has a free spirit(ie not bound by strict spiritual - religious - conventions. I may be wrong but I see at as a crescendo leading to the ecstasy as experienced by humans(sexual orgasm as created by god/allah if one believes in god/allah). The sophisticated human can see it like that and leave it at that. Provided of course they are not indoctrinated into believing that anything sexual is of the devil. In the civilised West men are familiar on a daily basis - on public transport, on the street, in restaurants, in churches, etc. - with females and their charms. Of course some men look and admire but they are meant to do just that. Without god- given attraction between the sexes there would be no sex and no babies. And god likes plenty of babies that will grow up to be his army. Of course a mature man can take all this in his stride. He may look but he knows he does not have to act on his impulses. He is a free spirit propelled by his logic and his knowledge. Of course some men will go on to rape but thankfully, that is a rarity and is an illness(of the mind)in any case. All this may sound strange to you and I can understand that. But I'll give you an example of what I mean. When humans are presented with a problem they often go round it hoping it will resolve itself. The wiser thing to do is to look at the problem, look it straight in the face, and work through it to resolve it. And come out 'clean'. This is why the repression of human sexuality(seen as a problem for humans, right?!)creates more problems and resolves nothing. We all know what happens when men are deprived of female company for a period - they get angry, frustrated, they behave like beasts, neurotic, guilty, self-loathing with low self-esteem. Alas, my guess is that you are not familiar with any of these concepts. Denial, after all, is often very strong among humans. And they pay the price. To answer your question, what do I think of this piece now? What I think of this piece now is what I have always thought it was. A piece of sensual, climactic music and there is nothing wrong with that. In your case I think you hae sex on the brain. I wonder why? Find a woman or two, half some lean fun. But don't get addicted. Pleasure is addictive as you probably know. And who made it pleasurable? It wasn't Ravel I can assure you. Ravel is just the vehicle. The rest is up to us. Next question!

Initially I wasn't sure of the gender of the hypermobile lead. I found it dry, not the least bit alluring and the choreography very unimiginative. The ballerina was a great actress, however, and as fit as any dancer I have ever seen.
