For this series, I feel like it could be really cool if you could manage to collab with the SlowMo Guys at some point. Getting their high-speed cameras to really capture the detail of a weapon detonating could be both fun *and* educational to see exactly where the parts fail in even more detail than with your current camera. Also, a rifle with a wood stock would also be interesting to see, as it would likely rupture much differently than the polymer did.

338 Lapua Magnum would be interesting. Not only because it's my favorite long range rifle platform. But, also because of the way, the good ones at least, are built like tanks to handle the extremely high pressure and muzzle velocity that the round creates. The Barrett M98B, Armalite AR30 and FN Ballista are simply a thing of beauty and engineering marvel. I'm pretty confident that a barrel explosion from it will be similar or possibly even more violent than the standard 50 BMG round would be. Those rounds are extremely spicy. 69,000 PSI barrel pressure for the .338 LM vs 60,000 PSI for the 50BMG for the doubters out there.

The weatherby mark v was designed with case head separation in mind and has a bolt designed to vent overpressure gasses away from the shooter. It was one of the earliest bolts to do this if I'm not mistaken. Perhaps a .460 weatherby magnum in mark v? Really put the safety claims to the test?
@darrellcook8253
@darrellcook8253 2 жыл бұрын
I'll watch that! Then again I'll watch anything Scott posts. The weatherby mk V has to have a pretty hot load to test its safety. I'd like to see what would happen if he had hands made like that skull and see what damage occurs in shooting position. Exploding guns shred hands and arms. Scott could show us.

@@darrellcook8253 judging by what I have read on testing data, my latest hand loads exceeded 100000 psi. Popped the primer, stuck cartridge, and the bolt face was stamped hard and imprinted by the base of the case. I wish I had a chronograph running to see just how hot the 180g bullets we're going... Needless to say, I emptied those loads and redid them. I want Scott to show me how close I was to needing to use my thumb.

Solitary hunting isn't going away any time soon, judging by human history anyway. Hunting rifles use slings that has barrel pointing up behind your back, for a good reason: It's what the OG's figured out worked best, no need to run around all tactically and look left & right and all that jazz. Always bring a collapsible bore-rod & bore-snake, this stuff doesn't weigh much for the little bit you'll be walking, always check your gun between walking out and settling in on station for the day. Bolt comes out on most bolt actions, so remove it and check down the bore, if there are no obstructions give it a swipe with the snake anyway. NOW you can load the gun. Likewise if the gun did hit the ground in-between/somehow, check it again, if you do have a barrel obstruction that wont come out = Head back. Just employ basic common gun safety , and if you can't do that, you don't deserve to own a gun IMO.

In 40 plus years of shooting I had my first squib and luckily it was in a semi-auto .22 and I was using CCI Stingers. I figured that the round didn’t have powder and the force of primer forced bullet about an 1” into barrel. Not knowing I had a squib I shot again and I believe that the reason I had no damage was due to it being a semi-auto .22. Being that the bolt could move it allowed all of the pressure to escape. I’m glad all it gave me was a headache and I didn’t have to thumb any holes. This just happened this past Wednesday. Great video!

I'm kind of curious what a .22lr would do with an extra spicy round. I'm sure it wouldn't be as energetic as this or your .50, but then again, the gun won't be as durable either so maybe the lower cartridge side and the smaller gun would balance out to similar destruction,
@randomidiot8142

Depends on the action. My dad's buddy would reload .22's as a kid and he called them stingers decades ago. He tried for a long shot with one of his hot rounds and blew the bolt out the back of the action. More recently I had an out of battery in a .22 and the bullet lodged three inches into the barrel. The case was very mangled. The next round bulged the inside of an 1.25" bull barrel where the stuck bullet was. I didn't notice anything too crazy when I shot it but it wasn't very accurate after that.

I would like to see you try and recreate what the special forces did in Vietnam with an SKS. They would load a squib round into the chamber of any weapons found in caches so that when the next enemy soldier would try and use it it would explode in their hands sending the bolt back into their face. You can actually find some stories from soldiers who would be on patrol hear a rifle shot only to find an enemy soldier with the bolt in him dead from that round doing it’s job. Would be pretty cool with a zombie head behind it.

Your situation was a freak accident and why I'm so greatful/thankful that you're still with is today 🙏🙌.. Anyways thank you again Scott for doing these experiments and I'll see you on the next one brother.

I love that my top suggestions for guntuber channels are just 4 or 5 guys quietly roasting each other. Side note, loving this series. While reminding me why I don’t load my own ammo, it also freaks me out less

Its amazing to see how far scott and his channel has come throughout the years! Videos a few years ago, scott seems like a different person and is so much more tame and monotone compared to today. His character arc is one of the greatest of all time on youtube. I'm happy that i found your channel scott.

Love how you have taken your experience and turned it into such an awesome series, keep up the good work. I would love to see something along the lines of a bullpup having a failure like this, maybe a Keltec RFB or something a little bigger? To that extent how about a shotgun?

Scott, I look forward to seeing what you can do with this new series. Life gave you eggplants and you've made baba ganoush. As far as a suggestion for the series, it might be smaller than your first two, but what about pistols? Could a Glock fail this spectacularly? Or a 1911? Would it need to be something massive like a .454 or .50AE?

Hey Scott, could you test the internet rumor that a 5.56 rifle can fire .223 rounds all day, but firing 5.56 rounds in a .223 can damage the rifle? I read that since there's more powder in the 5.56 that it could damage a rifle designed for a less spicy round.
@Aliyah_666
@Aliyah_666 2 жыл бұрын
Maybe it could I think there isn't too much that would happen. Popped primer maybe, I mean I wouldn't go only feeding a .223 rifle 5.56 but it wouldn't damage a rifle if it was sparingly.

This is a really useful comparison for how well both the Serbu (in particular) and the Barrett did. This just atomized, and there was little apparent damage to the barrel. The 50. Cals seemed to better contain their energy, with more being put into breaking the weapon instead of just flying apart.
@Talishar
@Talishar 2 жыл бұрын
You want more breaking apart. The more pieces that fly away, the less energy is left over to be focused into a single set of parts. That's what made the Serbu in particular so dangerous. Most of the firearm generally held together which meant that most of the weapon was fairly strong and it focused all of the energy into the weak points of the threaded cap and the thin flanges securing that cap as a "safety feature." That same safety feature which almost killed him. If you ever see an F1 car crash, you'll notice that it looks like it explodes in a crash with body pieces everywhere. This is by design. It's how something going so fast can have some pretty nasty crashes which allows the driver to most of the time, walk away in one piece. The pieces breaking away carry with them the energy put into them which is less energy transferred to the driver. This is what makes old cars so dangerous. Their nearly all-steel construction meant that they held up pretty well but instead they ended up just transferring all of that energy to the soft squishy bits on the inside instead. We have now crumple zones and bodywork designed to break apart and fall off now instead of full steel bumpers and the like.
@scottashe984
@scottashe984 2 жыл бұрын
@@Talishar Or you build it so that it doesn't fall. Being strapped inside an F1 and shooting a rifle are two different things.
@Talishar
@Talishar 2 жыл бұрын
@@scottashe984 The concepts of energy management aren't though. That part completely went over your head. The F1 is an example of designing to prevent as much energy from the outside and the current situation from reaching the vulnerable driver in the middle of it. I don't know what you mean by "build it so it doesn't fall" as that literally makes no sense in this context. Modern gun designs do the same thing. They're designed so that in the event of a catastrophic failure, as much energy as possible is directed AWAY from the shooter and not into the shooter via life ending shrapnel. We've seen this in many catastrophic failures of many modern weapons. Usually the shooter is just fine, it's just their underwear gets a bit heavier. Usually the exploding weapon is more of a hazard to those near and around the shooter than the shooter themselves.

My thoughts exactly! although it wouldn't have been as eventful with a spicy round, I'm pretty sure that gun would have blown up with a normal Loaded round in an obstructed Barrel with another round lodged in it. After a barrel has been obstructed like that, any gun becomes a pipe bomb.
