I think because shotguns have thick barrels ..especially double barrel shotguns they are built to be tough as all hell...considering how many different loads you can shoot out of one they have to be that tough in order to not explode

It’s really not, sectional density isn’t that good compared to the .600 nitro and the smaller calibers. Besides at $100 a round who is going to afford to shoot that?? Not to mention it’s practically overkill and the recoils is not tolerable to most, along with the weight of the gun. There’s a reason why all the African big game hunters never use the biggest of boys. .458 Win Mag is more than enough for elephant and rhino, the biggest things to walk this earth…

@@zedlepplin7834 The majority of times damage to guns occurs because of barrel obstructions, it happens to hunters who have inadvertently/unknowingly clogged their bores with mud/snow. Yes, even snow is a barrel obstruction. Perhaps from a fall. If they didn't check the bore this can happen. It is the reason a lot of old guns' barrels get bulged or split. It rarely happens to people who do their shooting at ranges or from computer keyboards in their basements. If you ever get the opportunity to go hunting, outside, in the real world, always check the bore of your firearm if you or your gun take a fall. It's a safety thing.

It looks to me like it might actually be somewhat usable again after that last shot as long as the locking mechanism isn't permanently damaged. The clogged section appears to be clear of the remaining bore. You'll definitely be down quite a bit in velocity and overall range, but you might still be able to fire it and actually hit a target.

It's not guns that's concerning him. It's the incredibly dangerous misuse of them. When used even remotely properly, being next to one isn't dangerous, hence why he had no issue shouldering and firing the shotgun at the beginning of the video.

Scooter was getting his "dust" on in the opener. That was hilarious. Where the 700 Nitro cartridge case was bulging, try wrapping the cartridge in a small plastic shim if you ever plan to perform a similar test on another caliber. There was just too much wiggle room between the cartridge and the chamber to build pressure.

I have one of these shotguns (basically the same exact gun) and I can see why it took so long to break. The barrel walls are VERY thick on these shotguns. It's still crazy that it actually contained all that pressure without exploding, before launching the shell out at the speed of sound. The pressure must be fairly low. If you could get full pressure out of that 700 nitro round, that shotgun probably would've exploded into several pieces.

Glad to see the 'lead sled' is being used, but like they say, "It's all fun and games until...well you know!" Your pickup is a real pretty barricade, but not sure your auto policy will cover damage from explosive testing activities. That being said, maybe it's time to build a nice towable steel/sand bag barricade to get behind. Pretty sure that recent history has made you a strong advocate for personal safety. Thumbs up!

Anyone else old enough to remember the lever action "pop" guns that just blew air? We used to stuff those into the dirt just like he does with the shot gun and suddenly we had a dirt gun! Later models of these "toys" had a metal bar through the muzzle to stop us from doing this, but they were easily modified and the dirt/rock wars continued! It was all fun and games and luckily no one I knew ever lost an eye!

I used to have one that shot out a cork. Had several actually. The cork on these pop guns sometimes were tethered to the end of the barrel with twine so you wouldn't lose it. Just stuff the cork in the end of the barrel, pump it, and *POP!* I believe IIRC they were single pump break action to pump them. This was in the early/mid '70s. Haven't seen those in a long, long time.

The reason he probably hasn’t done that yet is because they are EXPENSIVE. A double rifle, because of their intricate action requiring a talented gunsmith to make, is $10,000+ for almost any caliber. With $35,000 being the cheapest 700 nitro you could find. (They are typically $80,000-$250,000)

Thought: Why don't you cut a 10 gauge hull and use it as a sleeve around the .700 nitro, and see if you can get compression that way? Maybe flip around a wadding and use it on the bullet as a reverse sabot.

No compression because the bullet is smaller than the barrel . You can wrap the case with whatever thinkable it would be stiil the same pitiful nonsense. The 700 nitro is just a ClickBait. Dirt plug incidents are as old as shotguns.

@@ant1sokolow He could always try that 3D printed barrel insert like what Brandon Herrera did when putting .50 BMG in that shotgun. It’s still not full compression, but it necks a large portion of the barrel down to the desired caliber size and allows for more powder to burn.

I was at a friend's gunsmith shop when a guy came in carrying a shotgun with about four inches of the barrel at the muzzle opened up flat and sticking out like a flag in a windstorm. He was asking about getting a poly-choke installed. When Chet asked him how he blew up the shotgun barrel, they guy said, "If you saw a fish in the water and wanted to shoot it, how would you do it?" He then went on to explain that he had stuck the muzzle about four inches into the water and shot, spectacularly rearranging his barrel. I asked what happened to the fish and he said he was so busy counting his fingers he forgot to check on the fish. Jess

I heard about the 50 accident while I was deployed. Didn’t know much of Scott until right before but I loved all of his content I had seen until that point. I’m glad to hear and see he’s doing a lot better and he’s one of the reasons I’ve gotten more into shooting including purchasing my first ever firearms

Really wanted to see him shoot the nitro in the obstructed barrel. Would've been cool to see if the extra compression from the obstructed barrel would've caused more burning of the powder.

A 3d printed sleeve would give it needed compression boost and it's brittle enough to fail after a certain point saving the gun from excessive damage.

Hey Scott..again, great video. This reminds me of a time years ago while hunting in So. Georgia and my Grandpa's 12 GA split the barrel when I launched one. Totally took us all by surprise, but luckily no one was hurt. I mainly felt bad for ruining my Grandpa's 12 GA..but he wasn't upset. Just glad us boys were all safe.. @@tinkeringclaws5559 Agreed, but the problem is getting said barrel. H&R is no longer in business. Also, when they were in business, they refused to sell their barrels as a standalone part. If you wanted a new one you either had to send your gun into them so it could be "fitted" to it, or get lucky enough to find one at a gun show.

I clicked on this so fast, I laughed harder than almost any other moment in any of your videos when the bullet came out an hit the water jug…. And it looks like to me an obstructed barrel on your 10 gauge is just helping with the ejection cycle… it self opens and ejects the spent casing now all you have to do is drop a new one in.👍👌

Those last three that actually broke the barrel reminds me of cannon fire. May I suggest getting your hands on one of those firing mini cannons rated for shotgun shells and see what kind of fun you can have with that? I think it would be cool.

Try a 308 in a 7mm, you'll get the results you expected on the first trigger pull. We survived, but the rifle didn't. Great video, as always. Keep up the great work.

8 m/m Mauser in a .30/06 is also a real bolt-buster. Anything oversize will generate pressure. The .700 is about 12 ga. dia. so I knew it would be a fizzle in a 10 ga.

The 700 was too small for the 10 ga so there’s no point in trying it would be too big and if it did fit, the powder load of a 10 ga is significantly smaller than that of the 700 nitro so it would fire like normal
