Great video. Thanks for the points. I personally love bolt actions and have learned technique to cycle them fast for rapid fire. My dad (USMC ‘67-‘71) was emphatic that we learn bolts as kids long before anything else. I have several bolts but really incline to my Ruger American Ranch in 556, 16” barrel with iron sites, for different defense scenarios.

Imagine sneaking into somebodys house at 2am. Quietly sneaking around, easing open drawers and closet doors, being tentative to every little noise.. Then all of a sudden somebody touches off a 300 mag ... Even if he misses you'll likely have a massive heart attack..

I’d recommend double checking your info on compensation for close range with a 100 yard zero. You definitely don’t want to aim a few inches lower at 25 feet or less, you will be hitting low. At close range, the main compensation you need to make is for the height over bore of your optic. For example, I have my Eotech XPS 2-2 zeroed for 50 and 200 yards on my AR. At indoor ranges, my POI will generally be where the bottom line intersects with the outer circle. For rifles zeroed at mid-long ranges, you’ll need to aim higher within 25 yards to hit your target, to account for the distance between your bore and the center of your reticle. Live fire practice with any gun you plan to use for home defense, and figure out where it is hitting at indoor distances before making recommendations. Knowing where to aim at short range with a long range gun is the difference between killing the guy holding a knife to your kids throat, and putting a big canoe through Little Jimmy’s head.

It can definitely be done, if it were up to me I would want something in 308 loaded with a heavier subsonic bullet with a bonded sp, or hp a 16 or 18 inch barrel with the ability to use stripper clips, with a red dot or low power optic threaded with a flash hider and or a suppressor and the ability to use a bayonet because who doesn't love options...

I have an SKS, an AR a Glock 19 and a 45. I love my 45, 1911 for home defense. My house was marked by Gang bangers to be home invaded according to the Police. I went to the local Police Department filed a report and I am living a normal life, I just have been more aware of my surroundings. My Glock -19 and my 1911 RIA are more than enough to protect my home and family . I will never use a bolt action rifle because it will penetrate my house walls.I would not judge anyone that have only a bolt action rifle to defend his family.

One thing I notice is people talking about home defense firing the rifle INSIDE the home. In my opinion, that's personal defense, you've already had the home breached. Home defense would be defending threats coming from outside the home. Then it depends on where you live if a bolt gun is s viable choice or not

But most time i shoot around 200 and 200 is good enough. Funny your talking about kentucky windage because i live in west ky Plenty of farms around here and a 200 to 500 yrd shot is normal around here. This whole premise is preposterous, especially at .308. Even if you hit your target, more than likely that bullet is going to go through that person and continue through 2 more interior walls and probably through a concrete block exterior wall. If that was the only rifle I had for home defense I would buy a handgun or shotgun. Every hunter I know has a handgun in case he has to track a wounded animal and finish the job. 308 is for hunting large animals (Deer, Hog etc.) at range, not for shooting humans at max 20-25 feet away.
@FreedomTimes41303 жыл бұрын
Also alot would depend on your scope. If its zoomed out you cant go grabbing it and looking through it in a house. You wont see anything.

Here in Africa that's mostly the hunting / home defense weapon we have, save for a Shotgun. Our walls are made of 6 inch blocks. Personally in a home defense setup, I would suggest to takeoff the scope and use iron sights.

Matt, I'm curious how your considerations are for hearing damage/protection affect your choice of home defense weapon. I'd assume that in a home defense shooting scenario most of the time a shot will be fired indoors without hearing protection which likely could cause permanent damage to hearing. Of course still better than being dead .... but still something you would have to live with on top of having shot a living human being.
@ArmedSteadyFirearmsChannel3 жыл бұрын
I’ve shot my M16 indoors on many occasions in combat in Iraq, your ears ring, but you can still hear what’s going on around you. After afew hours your fine. Does it do long term damage, probably. My hearing is bad in my left ear due to a tank that fired it’s main gun right next to my fire team

I have a 1993 Weatherby mark 5 338 win mag and a 2020 savage 11 hog hunter 308 ... i would never use them for home defense unless i was posted up on the top floor out a window getting people before they got next to my house. From a distance. I mean if its all you have its better then nothing. But also being so long being able to move around the house with it and swing it back and forth its not really a good idea. I have a winchester 1200 ted Williams 12 gadge i cut the barrel to 18 inches because of that very reason. To long for self defense
