I was in Nashville in 2002 or so for the Summer NAMM show and I wander into a bar where Johnny Hiland was playing. I don't drink at all, so I know what I saw was for real and not a figment of a drunken stupor. Here was the unlikely-looking individual playing the most amazing country guitar I had ever seen in my life.

Johnny's ascending and descending double stops esp when he gives both notes a slight bend as he descends down the neck are absolutely insane!!!!! I rarely ever hear anyone else do those bends with the double stops!!

Steve Gaines licks are actually more mature sounding with less useless notes.. Johnny just puts to many there that don't need to be with to much legato..each note should always be picked...listen to Steve on "I Know A Little " same difference!....anyway I love Johnny Hiland he's a beast!

Johnny H is a great guitar player and I'll NEVER be able to play like that. I'm amused at the 3:00-3:45 marker that he he plays the whole solo with machine gun notes. I've never heard anyone talk like that. A great guitar player taught me to play the same way you speak with phrasing and pauses [rests]. JH's shuffle riff is cool at the 6:45 marker.

Yea...I was at Winter NAMM when Forrest Lee Jr. and Johnny were messing with the Bolt...it's a perfect amp for all of Johnny's styles...sounded great!

To be honest I am not really a big Country or Bluegrass fan. I am more of a Jazz Guy but there are a few guitarists who play this style I know and LIKE and Johnny Hiland sure is one of them. This guy can play like a "........"😝😝😝let's keep it decent. Great bends and a lot nice dissonance and lightning fast too. And he can play the changes, absolutely fantastic player!
